August: the Sunday of Summer

As the summer months draw to end, the slightly cooler temps of August remind us that fall is near. Here in Connecticut, we have even begun noticing a few changing leaves revealing orange hues. 

 

As the leaves adjust to cooler temps, however, so do building materials. Many materials expand and contract as temperatures rise and fall and are subject to humidity, and now is a time to keep an eye on historic structures and interiors - looking for signs of stress or damage in plaster or painted finishes.

In order to continue to provide a safe place of worship, The First Congregational Church of West Haven began this project as a result of a catastrophic failure of a section of the ceiling border moulding that fell onto wood furnishings and the floor.
