Cultivating AgTech Innovation in London |
|
|
Ealier this week we were in London for the World Agri-Tech Innovation Summit, where we joined industry leaders for the "Cultivating Innovation: Start-ups Shaping the Future of AgTech" session, hosted by Matt Brennan of Cultivator. The energy was electric as start-ups from Canada and the UK took the stage for rapid-fire pitches, offering a glimpse into the future of farm gate innovation.
Our fearless leader, Karen Schuett, took the stage in London on Monday to highlight the breakthrough work we are doing to transform waste into valuable resources, driving both sustainability AND profitability in agriculture. The session reinforced the critical role start-ups play in advancing agtech, and left us inspired to keep pushing boundaries as we never stop innovating! |

Apply for an AMMP Grant and start Reducing On Farm Methane Emissions |
The Alternative Manure Management Program (AMMP), administered by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), is now open for applications. This program provides financial assistance to California dairy and livestock producers to implement non-digester manure management practices that reduce methane emissions. Grants help fund projects that improve manure handling, storage, and treatment to mitigate greenhouse gas impacts. Applications are due October 18th. Optimizing Fall Manure Applications with Real-Time Data! |
|
|
Happy Fall! As the seasons change, it's time to start thinking about fall manure applications. This month, I want to highlight the importance of data capture and nutrient management, especially as it relates to your manure applications.
If you read July's Fast Facts, you know we’re thrilled to be working with the University of Calgary on a sensor project over the next 3½ years (click HERE to read the original press release). This sensor will allow you to measure nutrient levels in your manure—specifically nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K)—in real time.
So what does this mean for you? |
You’ll be able to capture and track NPK data daily as you process manure through LWR’s First Wave and PLANT systems, giving you precise control over nutrient application when it’s time to fertilize.
Whether you're applying solid manure in the fall to optimize organic nitrogen and phosphorus, or liquid concentrate in the spring for ammonium-rich nutrients, this technology will allow you to fine-tune your application rates for maximum efficiency and plant uptake.
Most farms already use manure to reduce their reliance on commercial fertilizers, but they are often limited by nitrogen or phosphorus levels. With this new sensor technology, you’ll be able to use variable rate technology in a way that has never before been possible in manure management. It will seamlessly integrate with other data collection systems on the farm, helping you optimize nutrient placement and timing, and ultimately save on commercial fertilizer costs.
And for those of you selling manure off-farm, the real-time data capture means you can confidently market manure with guaranteed nutrient concentrations, adding a valuable revenue stream to your operation. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to push the boundaries of manure management with data-driven technology! |

Optimizing Biogas Production with Different Manure Feedstocks |
Did you know that not all manure is created equal when it comes to biogas production? Enter The Fart Chart — a guide for understanding how different animal manures stack up in the world of biogas. It’s more than just a smelly situation; it’s a powerful opportunity to turn waste into energy! Here’s the breakdown: |
-
Cow Manure: The dependable producer! Cows are methane machines, making their manure one of the top feedstocks for biogas generation. The consistency and volume make it a reliable contributor to gas production.
- Pig Manure: Sneaky, but potent! While pigs may be small, their manure packs a methane punch and is a strong contender in the biogas race. pig manure is great for diversifying your feedstock mix.
- Chicken Manure: High in nitrogen and great for boosting gas yields, chicken manure is a valuable feedstock. However, too much nitrogen can cause ammonia buildup, so it's best used in moderation.
- Food Waste: Food waste is rich in organic matter, making it an excellent addition to biogas production. Adding food scraps can significantly enhance methane output, especially when combined with manure feedstocks.
|
The perfect combination of these feedstocks can help you maximize gas production and minimize waste. By understanding which animals provide the biggest bang (or gas) for their… droppings, you can fine-tune your digester for the best results. Do you want to harness the full potential of your manure for biogas? We can help you optimize feedstock combinations, boost gas yields, and transform waste into energy.
