| Making Waves in Wales: PLANT 85 Poised to Transform Biogas Operations |
|
|
We’re thrilled to share that LWR’s innovative Plant 85 system will soon be heading to a biogas facility in Wales—marking our second installation in the United Kingdom! The integration of resource recovery will be a game changer for this operation as they will soon have the ability to recycle clean water, produce nutrient-rich solids, and significantly reduce their digestate trucking costs.
Once installed, the Plant 85 will capture the majority of phosphorus from the digestate, allowing the facility to efficiently transport these valuable nutrients off-site. This will empower them to continue proactively managing their land and surrounding crops, ensuring a more sustainable nutrient management plan for the future. |

California's Alternative Manure Management Program is Open for Applications! |
|
|
|
The California Department of Food and Agriculture's AMMP is now accepting grant applications until 5PM PT on Friday, October 18, 2024. Commercial dairies and livestock operations can apply for funding to install equipment to reduce methane emissions and maximize environmental co-benefits. |
|
|
CDFA is offering both of its flagship dairy and livestock methane reduction grants: the Alternative Manure Management Program (AMMP) and the Dairy Digester Research and Development Program (DDRDP). AMMP has approximately $17.4 million available, and DDRDP has approximately $8 million available for awards.
LWR's First Wave system has previously been funded under this program and is considered a pre-approved technology. To learn more, reach out to Figure 8 Environmental through the link below: |

The 4Rs of Nutrient Management
|
|
|
Welcome to the final installment of our 4-part series on the 4R’s of Nutrient Management! If you’ve been following along, I hope you’ve found the insights helpful. If you’re just joining now, feel free to check out the previous Fast Fact issues to learn about the other key R’s: Right Source, Right Rate, and Right Place.
Today, we’re focusing on the fourth R: Right Time. This step is all about the timing of nutrient applications, and it’s particularly interesting when we talk about LWR’s outputs.
Timing is everything. It’s essential to consider seasonal conditions, weather forecasts, and the growth stage of your crops. By understanding how nutrients move within the plant and through the soil, you can make informed decisions that help you avoid nutrient runoff or leaching while maximizing plant uptake.
When it comes to LWR’s nutrient liquids, timing becomes even more critical. These liquids are rich in ammonium nitrogen, which plants can absorb quickly, making them an ideal choice for irrigation during the early growth stages when nitrogen demand is high. On the other hand, LWR solids, packed with organic nitrogen and phosphorus, are best applied in the fall. This gives the organic nitrogen time to mineralize and become plant-available, while phosphorus remains in place, provided soil erosion is managed.
Historically, managing liquid manure has been a challenge due to factors like inconsistent nutrient concentrations, application difficulties, and the timing constraints imposed by storage limits. However, with LWR’s innovative solutions, like the First Wave or PLANT systems, you can harness the full potential of the 4R’s, ensuring you get the most out of your manure nutrients.

The Science of Manure: How Innovation Supports Sustainable Farming
|
Manure has been central to agriculture for centuries, and scientific advancements have transformed its management. What once relied on manual labor and inconsistent fertilization has evolved into a precise, technology-driven process that works in harmony with nature.
Traditional manure applications resulted in nutrient loss and inefficiency. With the industrialization of agriculture, innovations like mechanical spreaders improved nutrient retention and crop yields, paving the way for the advanced systems available today. Modern Solutions: Where Science Meets Nature
Manure management in 2024 is powered by cutting-edge technology and data-driven insights. At LWR, we’ve developed systems that digitize manure, offering real-time data to optimize nutrient recovery and open doors to new opportunities like biogas production and ecosystem markets. Our solutions maximize both sustainability and profitability, ensuring farms can thrive in the modern agricultural landscape. These technologies: |
-
Regenerate soils with bio fertilizers to promote long-term fertility.
- Protect water sources by preventing harmful nutrient runoff and soil erosion.
- Recycle water for reuse on the farm
- Reduce emissions and generate green energy
- Access ecosystem markets while contributing to climate goals
|
This timeline shows how advancements in technology and agriculture have transformed manure into a resource for profit-driven sustainability: |
Through science and innovation, manure management has evolved from a waste problem into a sustainability solution. With continued innovation, MORE farms can turn challenges into opportunities for a greener, MORE PRODUCTIVE future.

Could Manure Act like Probiotics, Reducing Antibiotic Resistance in Urban Soils? |
Could Manure be the Activia of the Fertilizer Industry?
Similar to how probiotics in Activia yogurt promote a healthy gut by fostering beneficial bacteria, new research suggests that manure and compost could play a similar role for our soils. Studies have shown that soils treated with manure or compost not only contain more total bacteria but also a healthier bacterial balance. These amended soils even exhibit lower levels of harmful bacteria and antibiotic-resistant strains compared to untreated soils. |
This finding suggests that manure and compost may act like probiotics for the soil, introducing or encouraging beneficial bacteria that outcompete and suppress the less desirable ones. While further research is necessary to fully understand the long-term effects, the initial results are promising. Manure isn't just a fertilizer—it's a natural soil probiotic that helps cultivate a thriving microbial community, contributing to healthier, more resilient soils. |
