EMPOWER HEALTHCARE PARTNERS WITH HEALTHIER GLADES TO PROMOTE HEART HEALTH IN PAHOKEE
Empower Healthcare Know Your Numbers by Heart Event
Pahokee, Fla. February 28, 2024– On February 3, 2023, the Empower Healthcare clinic in Pahokee, FL, partnered with Healthier Glades, a Palm Health Foundation initiative, for “Know Your Numbers by Heart,” a special event to promote heart health during American Heart Month. Fifty attendees came to the Senior Resource Room in Pahokee for rapid A1C and cholesterol screenings, nutritional counseling, live CPR demonstrations, and education about preventing heart disease. Testing and information were provided by seventeen community partners, including the American Heart Association, Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, and the Diabetes Coalition of Palm Beach County.
According to the 2022 Palm Beach County, Florida Community Health Assessment, heart disease was the leading cause of death in Palm Beach County. What’s more, Black Americans—the majority in Pahokee—are 54% more likely to die of cardiovascular disease than White Americans, due to distinct risk factors like genetics and systemic disparities.
Empower Health, under the leadership of its founder Dr. Jinga Oglesby-Brihm, has been focused on comprehensive and innovative chronic disease management for the rural Glades community since the clinic opened on the campus of First United Methodist Church in 2022. The heart health event is one of many ways she integrates local and county partners to improve patient health education and access to care. “We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with the community to provide free potentially lifesaving screenings and educational sessions,” she said.

UNLOCKING THE HEAT IN MOSQUITO MODELING: EXPLORING DISEASE TRANSMISSION UNDER CLIMATE CHANGE
February 26, 2024 — Thermal adaptation is the ability for organisms to adjust their life history traits as the temperature changes. In the case of mosquitoes, these traits can determine their risk of transmitting mosquito-borne diseases and how this risk might change in the future as they respond to climates warming.
“Global drivers such as transport, trade and climate change, are altering the distribution of mosquitoes around the planet and, with this, comes shifting patterns of disease risk” said Matthew Thomas, a UF/IFAS professor and UF/IFAS Invasive Science Research Institute (ISRI) director.
In the study, “Phenotypic adaptation to temperature in the mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti,” published in the journal Global Change Biology, a team of scientists including some researchers at the Invasive Science Research Institute, examine a critical aspect often overlooked in models that examines the impact of climate change on mosquito-borne diseases. Many models don’t take into account the potential influence of thermal adaptation in mosquitoes.
“It is well accepted that temperature affects mosquito biology but the implications for disease transmission are still not well understood,” said Thomas.

STUDY SHOWS DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME HAS MINIMAL EFFECT ON HEART HEALTH
FEBRUARY 27, 2024 - ROCHESTER, Minn. — A recent Mayo Clinic study examining the effects of daylight saving time (DST) on heart health suggests that the impact is likely minimal.
In the nationwide study, researchers applied an advanced statistical model to look for any connections between DST and serious cardiovascular problems, including heart attacks and strokes. The study looked at 36,116,951 adults aged 18 and up across most U.S. states. (Arizona and Hawaii were excluded since these states do not observe DST.)
Researchers focused on the week directly after the spring and fall DST transition, when clocks are set either an hour forward or backward.
“We looked at five years across the U.S., and what we found is that it’s unlikely that there is a clinically meaningful difference in cardiovascular health due to daylight saving time,” says Benjamin Satterfield, M.D., Ph.D., a cardiovascular diseases fellow and lead author of the study.
Researchers found 74,722 adverse cardiovascular events occurred throughout the study during the spring and fall DST transition. An adverse cardiovascular event was documented when a person was hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of a heart attack, stroke, cardiogenic shock or cardiac arrest.
“These cardiovascular events are common health conditions, so this led to the question of whether this is more than would be expected if this had not followed the daylight saving time transition,” says Dr. Satterfield.
The observance of daylight saving time varies around the world. Countries that move clocks forward or back one hour may do so on different dates, and some do not observe daylight saving time at all.
In the Mayo Clinic study, the Monday and Friday following the spring DST transition showed a statistically slight increase in the rates of cardiovascular events — but when looking at all the data, researchers did not see the rise as clinically significant, he said.

CMS ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF THE 2024 IMPACT ASSESSMENT REPORT
February 28, 2024 – we are excited to announce the publication of the 2024 National Impact Assessment of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Quality Measures Report. CMS assesses the quality and efficiency impact of the use of quality measures in CMS programs every 3 years. The first report was published in 2012.
This report features analyses the quality measures used in 26 CMS quality and value-based incentive payment programs. Improvements in measure performance, largely prior to the COVID-19 public health emergency, are associated with positive impacts for millions of patients and substantial costs avoided. COVID-19 created challenges for most health systems that limited capacity to sustain improvement. During 2020 and 2021, 38% and 47% of measures analyzed, respectively, had scores worse than expected from baseline (2016–2019) trends, including significant worsening of key patient safety metrics.
The report documents progress in employing digital data sources and optimizing the CMS measure portfolio to reduce provider burden, as well as perspectives from focus groups that underscore the critical need to develop equity measures that address bias in care delivery, deficits in cultural competence, and social drivers of health relative to unmet health needs, poor access, and low health literacy. Notable highlights specific to eight CMS health care quality measures, including Equity and Behavioral Health are featured along with an appendix with comprehensive results.

INTERVENTION REDUCES LIKELIHOOD OF DEVELOPING POSTPARTUM ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION BY MORE THAN 70%
NIH-funded study shows prenatal mental health support is effective for women living in low-resource settings.
February 26, 2024 – Results from a large clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health show that an intervention for anxiety provided to pregnant women living in Pakistan significantly reduced the likelihood of the women developing moderate-to-severe anxiety, depression, or both six weeks after birth. The unique intervention was administered by non-specialized providers who had the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in psychology—but no clinical experience. The results suggest this intervention could be an effective way to prevent the development of postpartum mental health challenges in women living in low-resource settings.
“In low resource settings, it can be challenging for women to access mental health care due to a global shortage of trained mental health specialists,” said Joshua A. Gordon, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, part of NIH. “This study shows that non-specialists could help to fill this gap, providing care to more women during this critical period.”
Led by Pamela J. Surkan, Ph.D., Sc.D.(link is external), of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, the study was conducted in the Punjab Province of Pakistan between April 2019 and January 2022. Pregnant women with symptoms of at least mild anxiety were randomly assigned to receive either routine pregnancy care or a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based intervention called Happy Mother-Healthy Baby. The researchers assessed the participants (380 women in the CBT group and 375 women in the routine care group) for anxiety and depression six weeks after the birth of their child.

SMOKING CANNABIS ASSOCIATED WITH INCREASED RISK OF HEART ATTACK, STROKE
NIH-funded observational study shows risk grows sharply with more frequent use.
February 28, 2024 – Frequent cannabis smoking may significantly increase a person’s risk for heart attack and stroke, according to an observational study supported by the National Institutes of Health. The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, uses data from nearly 435,000 American adults, and is among the largest ever to explore the relationship between cannabis and cardiovascular events.
The study, funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH, found that daily use of cannabis — predominately through smoking — was associated with a 25% increased likelihood of heart attack and a 42% increased likelihood of stroke when compared to non-use of the drug. Less frequent use was also associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events. Weekly users showed a 3% increased likelihood of heart attack and a 5% increased likelihood of stroke.
Around 75% of the study respondents reported that they mainly used cannabis by smoking the drug. Approximately 25% of the respondents reported using cannabis by some method other than smoking, such as vaping, drinking, or eating the drug.
