SYLVESTER RESEARCH SHOWS NEW TREATMENT MAY ENABLE MORE PATIENTS WITH HIGH-RISK BLOOD CANCERS TO RECEIVE STEM CELL TRANSPLANTS

Patients from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups stand to benefit the most, which is particularly relevant for medical centers with highly diverse patient populations

MIAMI, FLORIDA – MAY 23, 2024 – A new treatment approach using an older drug may enable more patients with high-risk blood cancers to receive transplanted stem cells from unrelated, partially matched donors, according to a study conducted by researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and colleagues.

Results to be presented at the annual meetings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the European Hematology Association suggest the new approach may expand the donor pool, with patients from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups standing to benefit the most.

Finding a matched donor has long been a major hurdle for patients with blood cancers who need bone marrow or blood stem cell transplants.

Patients without an eligible family member often turn to the National Marrow Donor Program. The registry contains more than 40 million potential donors, but not everyone finds a match, particularly people from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. Only about half of Hispanic and a quarter of Black patients can find a fully matched donor, compared with more than 70% of white patients.

CLEVELAND CLINIC AND IBM RESEARCHERS APPLY QUANTUM COMPUTING METHODS TO PROTEIN STRUCTURE PREDICTION

Peer-reviewed paper highlights potential of combining quantum and classical methods in computer simulations

MAY 29, 2024 – Researchers from Cleveland Clinic and IBM recently published findings in the Journal of Chemical Theory and Computation that could lay the groundwork for applying quantum computing methods to protein structure prediction. This publication is the first peer-reviewed quantum computing paper from the Cleveland Clinic-IBM Discovery Accelerator partnership.

For decades, researchers have leveraged computational approaches to predict protein structures. A protein folds itself into a structure that determines how it functions and binds to other molecules in the body. These structures determine many aspects of human health and disease.

By accurately predicting the structure of a protein, researchers can better understand how diseases spread and thus how to develop effective therapies. Cleveland Clinic postdoctoral fellow Bryan Raubenolt, Ph.D., and IBM researcher Hakan Doga, Ph.D., spearheaded a team to discover how quantum computing can improve current methods.

In recent years, machine learning techniques have made significant progress in protein structure prediction. These methods are reliant on training data (a database of experimentally determined protein structures) to make predictions. This means that they are constrained by how many proteins they have been taught to recognize. This can lead to lower levels of accuracy when the programs/algorithms encounter a protein that is mutated or very different from those on which they were trained, which is common with genetic disorders.

The alternative method is to simulate the physics of protein folding. Simulations allow researchers to look at a given protein’s various possible shapes and find the most stable one. The most stable shape is critical for drug design.

HARSH MARIJUANA LAWS GO UP IN SMOKE

A University cannabis epidemiologist and a criminal law specialist applaud the federal government’s proposal to reverse the criminalization of cannabis.

By Michael R. Malone: m.malone@miami.edu

May 23, 2024 – The federal government recently initiated the formal rulemaking process to reclassify marijuana from Schedule I—listed on a par with heroin, cocaine, LSD, and a cache of other banned substances—to Schedule III. The move, another step in the process endorsed last year by the Department of Health and Human Services and proposed last month by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), recognizes the plant’s medicinal value.

“For 50 years—a really long time—cannabis has been sitting right next to heroin [in terms of policy], so now we’re grateful to move away from that and get more into the medicinal potential,” said Denise Vidot, an associate professor in the School of Nursing and Health Studies at the University of Miami.

INTERNATIONALLY TRAINED FEMALE ONCOLOGISTS FACE MANY DISCRIMINATION CHALLENGES IN THE U.S.

Sylvester-led study presented at ASCO highlights biases reported by female cancer physicians

May 23, 2024 – Coral Olazagasti expected a relatively smooth transition when she moved to New York to start her residency after graduating from medical school in her native Puerto Rico. But that proved wishful thinking.

She not only experienced major culture shock, but also her superiors and colleagues often chastised her for speaking too loudly and joked about her accent.

“Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory so when I moved to New York, I thought it wasn’t going to be a big change,” said Olazagasti, now a thoracic medical oncologist at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. “But I went through a significant number of adjustments and challenges, and that was a really lonely time. Not many people in my situation were talking about experiencing these challenges.”

QUADRUPLE THERAPIES AND THE FUTURE OF MULTIPLE MYELOMA TREATMENT

Sylvester researcher C. Ola Landgren, M.D., Ph.D., will present an overview of new studies and the state of the field at ASCO 2024

May 23, 2024  – The treatment landscape for multiple myeloma, the second most common blood cancer, is shifting rapidly, with newly diagnosed patients increasingly being treated with a four-part drug combination that includes a new immunotherapy agent.

Over the last decade, options have evolved from double, to triple to quadruple combination therapies. What do these new options mean for patients, and how will treatment change in the future?

Ola Landgren, M.D., Ph.D., will address these questions and more June 3, at the 2024 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). He was tapped to discuss new studies on combination therapies and provide his perspective on the field for the audience of scientists and physicians.

HEALTHCARE NETWORK BREAKS GROUND ON ORANGETREE HEALTH CENTER IN COLLIER COUNTY

May 23, 2024 – Healthcare Network hosted a groundbreaking on May 21 that signals the start of construction for its future Orangetree Community Health Center in the north-central region of Collier County.

The $15-million, two story medical complex will ensure that more than 41,000 residents in the Orangetree area, including Golden Gate Estates, will have access to high-quality medical care. The once-rural region is now one of Southwest Florida’s fastest-growing areas, but it remains a “healthcare desert” without any health clinics or medical centers.

“From Collier Boulevard and Immokalee Road, all the way to Ave Maria, there are no doctors,” said Jamie Ulmer, president and CEO of Healthcare Network. “For far too long, the Orangetree community has not had access to critical, essential medical services.”

HIGH H5N1 INFLUENZA LEVELS FOUND IN MICE GIVEN RAW MILK FROM INFECTED DAIRY COWS

Mice administered raw milk samples from dairy cows infected with H5N1 influenza experienced high virus levels in their respiratory organs and lower virus levels in other vital organs.

May 24. 2024- Mice administered raw milk samples from dairy cows infected with H5N1 influenza experienced high virus levels in their respiratory organs and lower virus levels in other vital organs, according to findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The results suggest that consumption of raw milk by animals poses a risk for H5N1 infection and raises questions about its potential risk in humans.

Since 2003, H5N1 influenza viruses have circulated in 23 countries, primarily affecting wild birds and poultry with about 900 human cases, primarily among people who have had close contact with infected birds. In the past few years, however, a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus called HPAI H5N1 has spread to infect more than 50 animal species, and in late March, the United States reported a viral outbreak among dairy cows in Texas. To date, 52 cattle herds across nine states have been affected, with two human infections detected in farm workers with conjunctivitis. Although the virus has so far shown no genetic evidence of acquiring the ability to spread from person-to-person, public health officials are closely monitoring the dairy cow situation as part of overarching pandemic preparedness efforts.

INTRODUCING PEANUT IN INFANCY PREVENTS PEANUT ALLERGY INTO ADOLESCENCE

NIH study finds protection lasts no matter how often kids eat peanut in later childhood

May 28, 2024- Feeding children peanut products regularly from infancy to age 5 years reduced the rate of peanut allergy in adolescence by 71%, even when the children ate or avoided peanut products as desired for many years. These new findings, from a study sponsored and co-funded by the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), provide conclusive evidence that achieving long-term prevention of peanut allergy is possible through early allergen consumption. The results were published today in the journal NEJM Evidence.

“Today’s findings should reinforce parents’ and caregivers’ confidence that feeding their young children peanut products beginning in infancy according to established guidelines can provide lasting protection from peanut allergy,” said NIAID Director Jeanne Marrazzo, M.D., M.P.H. “If widely implemented, this safe, simple strategy could prevent tens of thousands of cases of peanut allergy among the 3.6 million children born in the United States each year.”

IMPLICATIONS FOR CANNABIS INVESTING AS A HIGHLY CAPITAL INTENSIVE BUSINESS

The Viridian Chart of the Week on 8/27/23 demonstrated that cannabis is more capital-intensive than tobacco, alcohol, pharmaceuticals, or general consumer products. Cannabis measured 1.67x capital/sales. The industry has managed to reduce capital intensity slightly since then, and the group now measures 1.54x capital/sales.

The high capital intensity has severe implications for internally fundable growth. If, on average, it takes $1.54 of extra capital to get $1 of additional sales, with 30% EBITDA margins and high 280e taxes, it is clear that growth requires external financing. S3 will help but not eliminate this issue.
