100 HCA Healthcare Hospitals Earn Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award
Named among the nation’s top hospitals for exceptional, patient-centered care
MARCH 13, 2025 – HCA Healthcare, Inc. (NYSE:HCA), one of the nation’s leading healthcare providers, today announced that 100 of its hospitals have been recognized as 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipients by Healthgrades for providing exceptional, patient-centered care. This annual recognition is given to the top 10% of hospitals for their commitment to delivering safe, high-quality care.
“Patient safety will always be at the forefront of our priorities,” said Dr. Michael Cuffe, executive vice president and chief clinical officer of HCA Healthcare. “I am proud of all of our hospitals and their staff, who continue to strive for clinical excellence, going above and beyond to provide high-quality, compassionate care to the patients who come through our doors.”
Recognition on this list is based solely on patient outcomes. To determine the top-performing hospitals for patient safety, Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates for approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide. The annual study found that patients treated in hospitals that received the 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award have a significantly lower chance of experiencing certain complications than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals.

Palm Beach Children’s Hospital at St. Mary’s Attains National Verification from the American College of Surgeons Children’s Surgery Verification Program
Verification demonstrates Palm Beach Children’s Hospital commitment to providing optimal surgical care for children who require surgical services
March 13, 2025- Palm Beach Children’s Hospital at St. Mary’s receives Level II verification by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Children’s Surgery Verification Quality Improvement Program (CSV).
The CSV program was developed to improve the quality of children’s surgical care by creating a system that allows for a prospective match of every child’s individual surgical needs with a care environment that has optimal pediatric resources. The program is based upon recognized standards meant to achieve high-quality patient outcomes for children’s surgical care. CSV standards ensure that children facing surgery receive care under a multidisciplinary program with quality improvement and safety processes, data collection, and appropriate resources provided to them as patients at the hospital.
“This distinction ensures that we are delivering the highest quality of care to our patients so they can have the best chance for a good outcome,” said Dr. Anne Fischer, Medical Director of Surgical Services at Palm Beach Children’s Hospital. “We were the first hospital to ever earn the Level II distinction, which requires the right level of training for our staff, infrastructure, and protocols. We want our young patients and their families to know that they are in good hands.”

Mayo Clinic researchers identify proteins linked to immunotherapy resistance in metastatic colorectal cancer
MARCH 13, 2025 – A discovery by Mayo Clinic researchers may help explain why immunotherapy hasn’t been helpful for many patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. In findings published in Clinical Cancer Research, the team identified specific proteins — fibronectin and smooth muscle actin — within colorectal cancer tissues that are associated with resistance to immunotherapy treatment.
Immunotherapy is a major advance in treating cancer, but many patients, including those with metastatic colorectal cancer, do not respond to it. Until now, researchers have not known why.
“We need predictive biomarkers to guide the selection of immunotherapy for patients,” says medical oncologist and gastroenterologist Frank Sinicrope, M.D., the senior author of the study. “Identifying those who may have resistance to treatment can be useful, because then we can spare them from receiving treatment that may not be beneficial and could produce significant toxicities.”
The research team used digital spatial profiling, an advanced technology that simultaneously analyzes the expression of multiple proteins and where they are located within tissues. This approach allowed researchers to zoom in to get a bird’s eye view of a tumor that includes proteins both within and surrounding the tumor cells and how they interact.

FMA: Hospital Leaders Joined the FHA’s 2025 Hospital Days Event to Advocate for Key Health Care Policies
MARCH 12, 2025 – Tallahassee, FL – Representatives from more than 50 Florida hospitals and health systems, spanning from Miami to North Florida and in communities between, joined the Florida Hospital Association (FHA) in Tallahassee this week to advocate for important health care policies and investments. Health care access and timeliness of care for Floridians and the state’s visitors are top-of-mind for Florida’s hospital industry.
“Key priorities for the 2025 Legislative Session include addressing hospital finance challenges and health care regulation proposals to strengthen Florida’s hospitals and health care systems,” said Dr. Larry Antonucci, Chair of FHA’s Board of Trustees and president and CEO of Lee Health System. “These efforts aim to optimize care delivery so patients can access the right care at the right time and in the most appropriate health care setting.”
FHA-supported legislative priorities for the 2025 legislative session include Emergency Preparedness for Life-Sustaining Medical Services (SB 1798 and HB 1531), which seeks to provide flexibilities to health care providers during emergencies; ‘Rural Renaissance’ legislation to enhance access to care in our rural communities (SB 110 and HB 1427); and streamlining Medicaid provider credentialing processes to reduce bureaucracy and improve access to care for Florida’s most vulnerable populations (SB 1236 and HB 1109).

Why Medicare Advantage keeps growing
By Jarrod Fowler, MHA
FMA Director of Health Care Policy and Innovation
MARCH 12 2025 – In 2023, more than half of Medicare beneficiaries (30.8 million) were enrolled in Medicare Advantage (MA) plans, up from 25% in 2010. MA plans are projected to cover 60% of Medicare beneficiaries by 2030, and the trend toward greater MA enrollment shows no sign of stopping. There are numerous reasons why MA plans have become increasingly popular, including:
Caps on out-of-pocket costs. Traditional Medicare does not impose any limit on out-of-pocket costs unless the beneficiary purchases a separate “Medigap” policy. However, all MA plans come with out-of-pocket limits.
Simplified benefits and additional benefit offerings. Unlike traditional Medicare, MA plans come with prescription drug coverage, which does not have to purchased separately. Many MA plans also offer additional benefits that are not covered by traditional Medicare, such as dental coverage and coverage for prescription glasses.

Topical steroid withdrawal diagnostic criteria defined by NIH researchers
Criteria may help guide treatment of dermatitis.
March 14, 2025- Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have determined that dermatitis resulting from topical steroid withdrawal (TSW) is distinct from eczema and is caused by an excess of an essential chemical compound in the body. Scientists from NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) identified treatments that could be studied in clinical trials for the condition based on their potential to lower levels of the chemical compound—called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), a form of vitamin B3. The findings were published today in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
Dermatitis is characterized by inflammation, itching, or burning sensations on the skin, and can result from various conditions including TSW and eczema. Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a common cause of dermatitis and affects 10 to 30% of children and 2 to 10% of adults each year in the United States. Topical steroids—specifically glucocorticoids or topical corticosteroids—have long been used as a first-line treatment for dermatitis caused by eczema because the drugs are safe, effective, easy to apply, and considered well-tolerated.
