TGH IMAGING HAS EXPANDED ITS HOLOGIC GENIUS 3D MAMMOGRAPHY SERVICES ACROSS 18 CENTERS IN 4 COUNTIES
By utilizing advanced technology, Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exams can significantly increase the detection of breast cancers and also decrease the need for additional testing.1-6
May 15, 2023 – As the need for more advanced technology continues to grow, TGH Imaging is increasing patient access across four counties for breast cancer screening by adding Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exams made by Hologic to 18 locations in Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas and Palm Beach counties. Also called tomosynthesis, 3D mammography is a form of mammography that creates a 3D image of the breast that can better detect breast cancer.
“3D mammography has become the superior choice in breast imaging,” said Dr. JoAnn Gierbolini, a Women’s subspecialized radiologist at TGH Imaging and collaborative assistant professor at the USF Morsani College of Medicine. “Being able to utilize this technology daily across four counties will allow our team to detect breast cancers earlier but also provide access for so many more women in our area,” she said. Compared with 2D mammography alone, 3D mammography can find 20 to 65% more invasive breast cancers.2
With breast tomosynthesis technology, the Hologic system creates a 3-dimensional image of the breast structure, which enables radiologists to more clearly see through overlapping tissue to detect cancers, often at an earlier stage.

CLINICAL TRIAL OF MRNA UNIVERSAL INFLUENZA VACCINE CANDIDATE BEGINS
May 15, 2023 – A clinical trial of an experimental universal influenza vaccine developed by researchers at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ (NIAID) Vaccine Research Center (VRC), part of the National Institutes of Health, has begun enrolling volunteers at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. This Phase 1 trial will test the experimental vaccine, known as H1ssF-3928 mRNA-LNP, for safety and its ability to induce an immune response.
The trial will enroll up to 50 healthy volunteers aged 18 through 49. Three groups of study participants (10 participants each) will be vaccinated with 10, 25 and 50 micrograms of the experimental vaccine, respectively. After evaluation of the data to determine an optimum dosage, an additional 10 participants will be enrolled to receive the optimum dosage. The study also will include a group of participants who will receive a current quadrivalent seasonal influenza vaccine. This will allow the researchers a point of direct comparison between the immunogenicity and safety of the candidate vaccine and available seasonal flu vaccines. Participants will be regularly evaluated to assess the vaccine’s safety (and, secondarily, its efficacy) and will receive follow-up appointments for up to one year after vaccination.

NIH STUDY FINDS HIGH RATES OF PERSISTENT CHRONIC PAIN AMONG U.S. ADULTS
Data are the first nationwide estimates on the incidence of new chronic pain and new high impact chronic pain.
May 16, 2023 – A study from the National Institutes of Health shows that new cases of chronic pain occur more often among U.S. adults than new cases of several other common conditions, including diabetes, depression, and high blood pressure. Among people who have chronic pain, almost two-thirds still suffer from it a year later. These findings come from a new analysis of National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data by investigators from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) at the NIH, Seattle Children’s Research Institute, and University of Washington, Seattle, and are published in JAMA Network Open.
“Understanding incidence, beyond overall prevalence, is critical to understanding how chronic pain manifests and evolves over time. These data on pain progression stress the need for increased use of multimodal, multidisciplinary interventions able to change the course of pain and improve outcomes for people,” said Richard Nahin, Ph.D., lead author and lead epidemiologist at NCCIH.

Ground-breaking study provides national and state-level estimates of the economic burden of health disparities by race and ethnicity and educational levels.
May 16, 2023 – New research shows that the economic burden of health disparities in the United States remains unacceptably high. The study, funded by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), part of the National Institutes of Health, revealed that in 2018, racial and ethnic health disparities cost the U.S. economy $451 billion, a 41% increase from the previous estimate of $320 billion in 2014. The study also finds that the total burden of education-related health disparities for persons with less than a college degree in 2018 reached $978 billion, about two times greater than the annual growth rate of the U.S. economy in 2018.
The findings from this study by researchers from NIMHD; Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, New Orleans; Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore; Uniformed Services University, Bethesda, Maryland; TALV Corp, Owings Mills, Maryland; and the National Urban League were published in JAMA.
