AMA statement on Florida ending all vaccine mandates

SEPTEMBER 3, 2025 – The following statement is attributable to:
Sandra Adamson Fryhofer, MD
Trustee, American Medical Association

“The American Medical Association strongly opposes Florida’s plan to end all vaccine mandates, including those required for school attendance. This unprecedented rollback would undermine decades of public health progress and place children and communities at increased risk for diseases such as measles, mumps, polio, and chickenpox resulting in serious illness, disability, and even death. While there is still time, we urge Florida to reconsider this change to help prevent a rise of infectious disease outbreaks that put health and lives at risk.”

Pediatricians Support Access to Vaccines for Florida’s Children

Ending vaccine requirements for school entry would cause a ripple effect across Florida communities and will limit family choices

September 5, 2025 – The Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FCAAP) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) are concerned that this week’s announcement by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Surgeon General Joseph A. Ladapo, MD, to end vaccine requirements for school entry will put children’s health at risk and negatively impact Florida’s communities.

“The ripple effect of removing vaccine entry requirements would affect all of us, not just those with children in school,” said FCAAP President Rana Alissa, MD, FAAP. “Infants, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems would be at much higher risk. Our state’s theme parks, grocery stores, movie theaters, sports arenas, and the waiting rooms in doctor’s offices and hospitals will all become places for contagious disease to spread easily – making every outing or gathering a risk.”

Physicians: Help Florida Seniors Make Informed Decisions

Miami-Dade and Broward County Medical Associations along with other county associations in Florida are promoting this survey:

Your input is extremely valuable to Florida’s seniors as they evaluate their options between Traditional Medicare and the various Medicare Advantage Plans available.

Each October, seniors are inundated with marketing and promotional materials promoting the benefits of switching from Traditional Medicare to Medicare Advantage. However, these materials often lack sufficient information about the rights and protections seniors may be relinquishing by making that switch.

The feedback provided by physicians through this survey will be instrumental in helping Florida’s seniors make informed decisions. Physician organizations across the state are working to develop an annual guide to help seniors and their caregivers assess plan performance and choose the option that best fits their needs.

We encourage you to invite fellow physicians to complete the survey. The more data we collect, the more comprehensive and impactful this guide will be for Florida’s senior community.

AMA advocacy win: New policies boost interoperability for physicians

SEPTEMBER 5, 2025 –Thanks to years of American Medical Association (AMA) advocacy, physician practices will soon benefit from long-overdue federal reforms that make sharing patient data faster, easier, and more complete—without extra logins, endless clicking, or expensive add-ons.

New federal interoperability agreements require all participating electronic health records (EHRs) to connect directly to national data-sharing networks approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. These systems must now deliver real-time, full patient information, including clinical notes, images, and medication lists that physicians actually use in care, rather than the basic data fields that are now available.

Gearing Up for a Busy Fall as We Urge Congress to Support Hospitals and Protect Access to Care

SEPTEMBER 5, 2025 – Congress returns to Washington, D.C., this week facing a long list of things to do, including several that will impact hospitals’ ability to provide access to care for patients and communities.

At the top of the list: Lawmakers must act by Sept. 30 to fund the federal government — including certain important health care programs — for the next fiscal year. If Congress does not enact all 12 appropriations bills, a continuing resolution would be needed to avoid a government shutdown.

Attached to the government funding deadline is the need for Congress to extend key health care policies, including the Low-volume Adjustment and Medicare-Dependent Hospital programs, telehealth and hospital-at-home programs, as well as the moratorium on cuts to the Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital program. Congress also needs to act before the end of the year to extend the enhanced premium tax credits that help individuals and families purchase insurance on the Health Insurance Marketplace. As part of these conversations, lawmakers also are considering deficit reduction efforts that could include further funding cuts to health care.

The brain-heart connection: Mayo Clinic expert explains powerful tie that works both ways

World Heart Day is September 29

SEPTEMBER 4, 2025  — You may have heard of the mind-body connection: the broad concept that  thoughts and feelings, especially those related to stress, can influence physical health. Mohamad Alkhouli, M.D., an interventional cardiologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, is researching the relationship between the brain and the heart. Each can have a powerful impact on the other, Dr. Alkhouli explains.

“The mind-heart connection is part of the broader mind-body relationship, but it’s uniquely powerful. Emotional states like anxiety, grief, or even joy can directly influence heart rhythms, blood pressure, and even the risk of heart attacks,” Dr. Alkhouli says. “At the same time, the heart sends signals back to the brain through nerves, hormones, and pressure receptors — affecting our mood, attention, and stress levels. So, it’s not just the brain talking to the heart; the heart talks back.”

HHS Announces Crackdown on Health Data Blocking

September 3, 2025 – Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has directed HHS to increase resources dedicated to curbing the harmful practice of information blocking. HHS will take an active enforcement stance against health care entities that restrict patients’ engagement in their care by blocking the access, exchange, and use of electronic health information.

The 21st Century Cures Act of 2016 authorized the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy/Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ASTP/ONC) and HHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) to take enforcement actions to hold those who block patient information accountable and to prevent future violations.  As a result, ASTP/ONC, the principal federal entity charged with coordination of nationwide efforts to implement and use the most advanced health information technology, and the OIG, the primary investigative division of HHS, will play leading roles in this initiative.

HHS Reinforces Religious and Conscience Exemptions from Childhood Vaccine Mandates

“Today’s letter makes clear that providers must respect state laws protecting religious and conscience-based exemptions to vaccine mandates,” said HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.  “States have the authority to balance public health goals with individual freedom, and honoring those decisions builds trust. Protecting both public health and personal liberty is how we restore faith in our institutions and Make America Healthy Again.”READ MORE

One dose of antibiotic treats early syphilis as well as three doses

NIH-funded clinical trial shows potential to simplify treatment for early syphilis.

September 3, 2025 – Researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have found that a single injection of the antibiotic benzathine penicillin G (BPG) successfully treated early syphilis just as well as the three-injection regimen used by many clinicians in the United States and elsewhere. These findings from a late-stage clinical trial suggest the second and third doses of conventional BPG therapy do not provide a health benefit. The results were published today in The New England Journal of Medicine.

“Benzathine penicillin G is highly effective against syphilis, but the three-dose regimen can be burdensome and deter people from attending follow-up visits with their healthcare providers,” said Carolyn Deal, Ph.D., chief of the enteric and sexually transmitted infections branch of NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). “The new findings offer welcome evidence for potentially simplifying treatment with an equally effective one-dose regimen, particularly while syphilis rates remain alarmingly high.”
