HOLY CROSS HEALTH COMPLETES ITS FIRST INSPIRE® THERAPY PROCEDURE
Fort Lauderdale, Florida – November 21, 2023 – Holy Cross Health has completed the first Inspire® procedure. Inspire is an FDA-approved obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treatment option for people who cannot use Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy.
OSA affects 22 million Americans. When left untreated, OSA can cause vehicle and workplace accidents, worsening mood and memory, stroke, heart attack and even death. It occurs when the airway collapses duringsleep and blocks the flow of oxygen to the brain. The brain senses a lack of oxygen and wakes the body up just long enough to take a breath, then falls back asleep. This cycle repeats throughout the night and causes poor, disruptive sleep.
Inspire works inside the body with a patient’s natural breathing process to treat sleep apnea. Mild stimulation opens the airway during sleep, allowing oxygen to flow naturally. The patient uses a smallhandheld remote to turn Inspire on before bed and off when they wake up.
The Inspire system is implanted during a short, outpatient procedure. The system is placed under the skin of the neck and chest through two small incisions. Most patients return home the same day and take over-the-counter pain medications to manage pain as needed.

NICKLAUS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL TO STUDY THE USE OF LOW-FREQUENCY FOCUSED ULTRASOUND THERAPY TO TREAT CHILDREN WITH AGGRESSIVE BRAIN TUMORS
Cancer and Blood Disorders Institute; Dr. Toba Niazi, Co-Medical Director of Nicklaus Children’s Brain Institute; Dr. John Ragheb, Chief, Department of Surgery.
November 20, 2023 – Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is to become only the third site in North America involved in a Phase I clinical trial studying the role of a new technology called low-frequency focused ultrasound (LoFU) in the care of children with a lethal type of brain tumor that forms within the brainstem.
Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) also now known as diffuse midline glioma (DMG), is an aggressive tumor that occurs within the brainstem and affects approximately 300 children annually, most of them between the ages of 5 and 9. Despite advances in treating other forms of brain tumors in children, DIPGs remain the most lethal brain tumor with a median survival of less than one year. DIPG tumors infiltrate the brainstem and are in a surgically inaccessible location. In the hands of an experienced team, they can be biopsied safely, with no harm to the patient. Adding to the clinical challenges presented by DIPG tumors, they are difficult to treat with chemotherapy, due to the protective brain-blood barrier that shields the brain from many pathogens.

November 17, 2023 – On a day reserved for celebration and acknowledgment, Boca Raton Regional Hospital, part of Baptist Health, commemorated the significant ongoing success and milestones of Keeping the Promise…The Campaign for Boca Raton Regional Hospital with the grand opening of the Toby and Leon Cooperman Medical Arts Pavilion, made possible by the efforts of campaign leadership over the last five years.

“We are so proud of all we’ve achieved, and enormously grateful to all those who helped make this happen,” said Lincoln Mendez, North Region Executive, Baptist Health and CEO, Boca Raton Regional Hospital. “This journey began nearly a decade ago, laying out plans for the largest expansion project in the hospital’s history, valued at more than $1 billion in investments to transform our campus. Along the way, we launched the Keeping the Promise campaign and more than 1,300 philanthropic gifts later, we exceeded expectations for fundraising goals with $270 million raised thus far, helping us launch a future of unprecedented sophistication in medical care.”

SUBOPTIMAL FOLLOW-UP, PREVENTION IN GERIATRIC FALL-RELATED HEAD TRAUMA
FAU Study Explores Follow-up with Primary Care Physician, Prevention Strategies After Emergency Department Visit
November 20, 2023 – Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries in the United States for adults ages 65 and older. With 1 in 4 older adults falling annually, 27,000 deaths, 8 million emergency department (ED) visits, and 800,000 hospitalizations have occurred.
Follow-up after an ED-related fall visit is essential to initiate preventive strategies in these patients who are at very high risk for recurrent falls. Currently, it is unclear how frequently follow up occurs and whether preventive strategies are implemented.
Researchers from Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine and collaborators explored this issue by investigating the rate of follow-up by older adults who sustain a fall-related head injury resulting in an ED visit, the rate and type of risk assessment and adoption of preventive strategies.

CLEVELAND CLINIC RESEARCH FINDS SEX DIFFERENCES IN IMMUNE RESPONSE AND METABOLISM DRIVE ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE
Findings provide new insight into why women are more likely to develop the disease and offer potential sex-specific approaches to prevention and treatment
NOVEMBER 21, 2023 – Cleveland Clinic researchers analyzed genes and brain tissue of patients with Alzheimer’s and found that differences in brain immunometabolism – the interactions between the immune system and the ways cells create energy – may contribute to women’s increased risk for the disease and its severity.
The findings, published in Alzheimer’s and Dementia, offer important insight into developing sex-specific treatment and prevention options for Alzheimer’s disease, the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States.

Gastric sleeve surgery, also called sleeve gastrectomy, is one of the most common bariatric surgery procedures. It removes a large portion of the stomach, leaving behind a narrow “sleeve.”
Matthew Kroh, M.D., section head of surgical endoscopy and vice chair of innovation and technology with Cleveland Clinic’s Digestive Disease Institute, led the team that successfully performed the operation in September. Following the procedure to treat obesity, the patient is doing well.

MAYO CLINIC RESEARCHERS DEMONSTRATE NEARLY 20% BOOST IN ADOLESCENT HPV VACCINATION RATES USING COMPREHENSIVE STRATEGY
NOVEMBER 20, 2023 – Mayo Clinic researchers demonstrated a nearly 20% increase in human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates among adolescents through a combination intervention approach, a new Mayo Clinic study finds. The strategy involved mailing reminders to parents about their child’s eligibility for the HPV vaccine and simultaneously giving healthcare providers feedback about successful HPV vaccine administration among the patients they had recently seen.
The findings, published in JAMA Pediatrics, suggest healthcare practices could adopt this evidence-based approach to boost HPV vaccination uptake in 11- and 12-year-olds.
“HPV vaccine uptake at 60% of eligible adolescents falls short of national public health goals and lags other adolescent vaccines,” says Robert Jacobson, M.D., a pediatrician in the Mayo Clinic Division of Community Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine. Dr. Jacobson is a co-principal investigator of the study.

OVERDOSE DEATHS INCREASED IN PREGNANT AND POSTPARTUM WOMEN FROM EARLY 2018 TO LATE 2021
Among those aged 35 to 44, overdose mortality more than tripled during this period, NIH study reports.
November 22, 2023 – Drug overdose deaths rose markedly between January to June 2018 and July to December 2021 among 10- to 44-year-old girls and women who were pregnant or pregnant within the previous 12 months, according to a new study by researchers at National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health. Overdose mortality more than tripled among those aged 35 to 44 during the study period, from 4.9 deaths per 100,000 mothers aged 35 to 44 with a live birth in the 2018 period to 15.8 in the 2021 period. Over 60% of these pregnancy-associated overdose deaths occurred outside healthcare settings, though often in counties with available healthcare resources, such as emergency and obstetric care. Published today in JAMA Psychiatry, the findings suggest that, while treatment is available to pregnant women with substance use disorders, significant barriers – such as penalization, stigma, discrimination, and limited socioeconomic resources – may obstruct the path to care, the authors note.
