Medicare Part B Premium Going Up in 2025

November 11, 2024 – The standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B — the part of Medicare that covers doctor’s visits, routine cancer screenings, home health care and other outpatient services — will be $185 for 2025, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced Nov. 8. This is an increase of $10.30 from 2024 and is similar to the nearly $10 monthly premium hike seen in 2024, from 2023.

Part B beneficiaries with annual individual incomes greater than $106,000 will pay more than the standard premium, though how much more depends on their income. CMS says income-related monthly adjustments affect roughly 8 percent of people with Part B insurance.

The annual deductible for all Medicare Part B beneficiaries is also going up in 2025, rising from $240 in 2024 to $257. Medicare beneficiaries typically pay 20 percent of the cost for each Medicare-covered service or item after they’ve met their deductible.

FDA Approves Tumor Treating Fields Device (Optune Lua) for Metastatic NSCLC

November 2024 – Recently, the FDA approved Optune Lua, a groundbreaking device for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. The device has initially been used for treatment of glioblastoma and mesothelioma, where electrodes are placed on the skin in order to disrupt separation of chromosomes in cellular division. Developed by Novocure, a global oncology company focused on cancer treatment, Optune Lua has now been adapted to function as a vest for treating non-small cell lung cancer.

Dr. Oleg Gligich, a board-certified oncologist at the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, notes, “During the clinical trial design, not all patients received immunotherapy beforehand, which would have been the current standard of care and would have yielded an overall survival benefit. Although the study’s design was somewhat unconventional, it has received FDA approval. Unfortunately, options in second line metastatic, stage IV lung cancer are limited, with no new developments in over eight years. Optune Lua gives a refreshing novel approach to treatment with survival benefit while minimizing toxicity.”
