Helen and Jacob Shaham make landmark gift to FIU Medicine New Academic Medical Center named in recognition of largest gift in college history
April 7, 2026 — Florida International University and Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (FIU Medicine) today announced a landmark $30 million gift from philanthropists Helen and Jacob Shaham.
In recognition of their generosity, the academic medical center currently under construction on FIU’s main campus, in partnership with Baptist Health South Florida (Baptist Health), will be named the Helen and Jacob Shaham Academic Medical Center.
“We’re proud to support FIU’s College of Medicine and the role it plays in our community,” said Helen and Jacob Shaham. “Expanding access to education and preparing the next generation of physicians is a meaningful investment of the future of South Florida and beyond.”
Made possible through critical investment and support from the Florida Legislature – which has allocated more than $158 million to date – FIU Medicine is partnering with Baptist Health, which will be the care provider and will manage the center’s operations. The seven-story facility, slated to open in 2028, will feature academic learning spaces and outpatient multi-specialty services, including same-day surgery and diagnostic imaging. These services will make it easier for the community to access high-quality outpatient care while helping train the next generation of physicians at a time when the U.S. faces a growing doctor shortage.
“This is a landmark moment in the history of Florida International University,” said FIU President Jeanette M. Nuñez. “Helen and Jacob Shaham’s extraordinary generosity will further elevate the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and accelerate our vision to build a world-class academic health center that transforms lives. Their investment is a testament to their belief in FIU and our role in transforming the future of health care.”

MARCH 27, 2026 – The 24th annual International Vascular Congress (IVC) takes place this spring in Miami. Now led by the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery, the conference brings together hundreds of attendees and thought leaders, including vascular surgeons, interventional specialists, fellows, sonographers and care teams from around the world for three days of intensive education, hands‑on training and candid clinical discussion.
Scheduled for May 28–30, 2026 at the Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay, this year’s meeting reflects the continued evolution of a conference that has helped shape modern venous and vascular care for more than two decades.
“This year’s conference focuses on the latest advances in the diagnosis and treatment of venous and arterial disease, particularly the rapid growth of minimally invasive therapies,” said congress organizer Jose Almeida, M.D., a UHealth — University of Miami Health System surgeon. “We bring together leading physicians, researchers and innovators to share real-world experience and emerging clinical evidence. The goal is simple — translate new ideas and technologies into better care for patients.”

VITAS Healthcare Encourages Advance Care Planning Ahead of National Healthcare Decisions Day
April 8, 2026 – In recognition of National Healthcare Decisions Day (April 16), VITAS Healthcare, the nation’s leading provider of end-of-life care, is calling on Americans to take an important step: document their healthcare goals and wishes before a crisis occurs.
Advance care planning ensures that individuals receive care aligned with their values, while easing the emotional burden on families and improving communication across the healthcare continuum. Yet many adults have not completed an advance directive or had conversations with loved ones about their preferences.
Free CME/CE Educational Webinar
To help address this gap, VITAS will host a free educational webinar designed for healthcare professionals and community members alike. The session offers one complimentary CME or CE credit, equipping clinicians with practical tools to guide meaningful conversations about advance directives and care planning.
Advance Directives and Advance Care Planning Wednesday, April 15 at 1:00 p.m. ET Virtual (Zoom): Register at VITAS.com/Webinars
“Too often, these conversations happen in moments of crisis, when patients may no longer be able to share their wishes,” said Heather Veeder, MD, regional medical director at VITAS. “Advance care planning gives people a voice in their care and provides clarity for families and clinicians. It is one of the most important steps we can take to ensure care reflects what matters most to each individual.”
The webinar will explore how clinicians can integrate advance care planning into routine practice, normalize conversations about serious illness and help patients document their preferences clearly and effectively.
Healthcare professionals and community members can learn more and register for the April 15 webinar and other upcoming topics at VITAS.com/Webinars.
Partnering With Healthcare Communities
VITAS is also expanding its educational outreach through collaboration. In partnership with the Florida Hospital Association, VITAS will host a joint webinar on April 16, focused on strengthening advance care planning conversations across Florida’s healthcare system. The initiative reflects a shared commitment to improving patient-centered care through earlier, more consistent dialogue.
In addition, VITAS experts recently contributed to broader national discussions on the topic. Dr. Veeder and Jason Cooper, national spiritual services lead, offered their perspectives during an episode of the MANifesting Health Webinar Series hosted by the American Association for Men in Nursing. Their discussion emphasized the clinical, emotional and spiritual importance of advance care planning, reinforcing the need for interdisciplinary approaches to these conversations.

Tampa General Hospital and Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH Earn Renewed Level I Trauma Center Verification From the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma
The only ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center in the West Florida region, Tampa General is re-verified through January 2029, reaffirming its national standard of excellence in trauma care.
April 10, 2026 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) and Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH today announced the renewal of their Level I Trauma Center verification by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT). The verification, which extends through Jan. 29, 2029, affirms Tampa General’s standing as the West Florida region’s only ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center and one of the nation’s premier academic trauma programs, in partnership with the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.
“Trauma care is among the most time-sensitive, high-stakes services a health system can provide, and this renewal is a testament to our extraordinarily dedicated team and how effectively we collaborate across disciplines to deliver the best care possible,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Florida Health Sciences Center | Tampa General. “As West Florida’s only ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center, we understand our profound responsibility to the patients and communities who depend on us fin their most critical moments. In partnership with the USF Health, we are delivering exceptional care today while also training the next generation of trauma surgeons and advancing the science of trauma medicine.”
ACS-verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria that ensure optimal trauma care capability and the highest level of institutional performance, as outlined in the ACS COT’s current manual, Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient. The rigorous renewal process included an on-site review conducted in January that evaluated all aspects of the trauma program, including physician leadership, nursing coverage, harm prevention, performance improvement, and patient outcomes.
The Trauma Quality Improvement (TQIP) report from the ACS’ Verification Review Committee placed the academic health system in the top 30% (3rd decile) nationally for severe traumatic brain injury risk-adjusted mortality. Additionally, the site visit reviewers highlighted numerous clinical and operational strengths across the program during the survey, including its neurotrauma and orthopaedic trauma programs along with robust injury prevention outreach, a highly trained registrar team, and a trauma ICU nursing model in which surgical trauma intensive care unit (STICU) nurses accompany patients through every step of their diagnostic workup. The ACS also recognized Tampa General and USF Health’s Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS), a state-of-the-art facility that provides expanded training and simulation opportunities for the trauma program, as a notable institutional strength, reinforcing the power of academic medicine to advance innovative care.

HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital offers advanced treatment options for heart patients
APRIL 9, 2026 – HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital, the only hospital offering complete cardiac care in Seminole and west Volusia Counties, recently added new treatment options for patients with heart disease.
The hospital, a part of the HCA Florida Cardiovascular Network, is the only local hospital to offer transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) – a minimally invasive treatment for aortic stenosis. Many patients in need of heart valve replacement previously had open heart surgery as their only option, potentially putting patients of advanced age or dealing with other medical conditions at high risk. The TAVR procedure allows the patient to receive a new valve through a catheter inserted through a small incision in the groin. The TAVR procedure minimizes the potential complications of a traditional open-heart procedure, resulting in better outcomes.
HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital has also added new technology in its cardiac electrophysiology lab for the treatment of atrial fibrillation, a leading cause of stroke and heart failure. This innovative procedure, known as pulsed field ablation, treats abnormal cells while also allowing the doctor to use a traditional radiofrequency ablation option during the procedure, resulting in faster, safer treatment for the patient. The electrophysiology team completed its 100th pulsed field ablation procedure, marking a milestone in advanced cardiac care for the local community.
“We are honored to be part of a world class team of cardiac specialists within the HCA Florida Cardiovascular Network, dedicated to providing leading-edge treatment options for patients living with heart disease,” said John Gerhold, the hospital’s CEO. “TAVR for treatment of aortic valve disease and pulsed field ablation for atrial fibrillation are two examples of how our cardiac team is employing the newest treatments available to improve safety and outcomes for our patients.”

CAAs in Florida: 20 years of supporting physician-led perioperative care
By Frank Rosemeier, MD, FASA, Ashley Tilton, MHSc, CAA, and Charles Chase, DO, FASA
April 8, 2026 – Today, more than 1,000 Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants (CAAs) are employed by over 65 healthcare systems across Florida. They practice in academic medical centers, community hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and other settings; however, the CAA profession may be less familiar to physicians outside anesthesiology.
Florida law structures CAA practice under the direct supervision of a licensed anesthesiologist. This framework preserves physician accountability and ensures that care remains medically directed. CAAs are an integral part of the anesthesia care team. They conduct preoperative evaluations and participate in anesthetic planning, induction, maintenance, and emergence. In contemporary clinical practice, CAAs work alongside and with a similar scope of practice as certified registered nurse anesthetists.
Florida has assumed a national leadership role in developing this workforce. CAA licensure was implemented in 2004, and the state now hosts four accredited CAA programs at Nova Southeastern University and two at South University. Collectively, these programs graduate approximately 200 CAAs annually, strengthening Florida’s in-state anesthesia workforce pipeline. Admission is highly selective and competitive: Applicants complete rigorous, science-based undergraduate coursework comparable to premedical requirements, including advanced biology, organic chemistry, physics, and physiology. Many programs also require competitive Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores like those of accepted applicants at U.S. medical schools. Acceptance rates are approximately 5%.

Low-cost care model reduces blood pressure in high-risk populations
NIH-supported clinical trial shows coordinated care strategy more effective than standard care
April 8, 2026 – A clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that a scalable, team-based intervention strategy in federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) was able to significantly reduce systolic blood pressure for low-income participants. Scientists deployed team-based care, which included intensive blood-pressure management, blood pressure tracking and feedback to providers, health coaching on lifestyle changes and medication adherence, and home blood-pressure monitoring.
Uncontrolled high blood pressure, known as hypertension, is a major preventable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and death worldwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 1 in 4 adults with high blood pressure has their blood pressure under control. 37 million U.S. adults with uncontrolled high blood pressure have a blood pressure of 140/90 mmHg or higher. Lower income Americans experience high prevalence of hypertension and low control rates, contributing to an increased disease burden.

CMS to Improve Patient Care Experience and Lower Costs for Hip, Knee, and Ankle Replacements
Proposed Expansion Would Improve Care, Lower Costs for Medicare Beneficiaries
April 10, 2026- Medicare beneficiaries undergoing knee, hip, and ankle replacements, among the most frequent surgeries for people with Medicare, could soon experience more coordinated care and lower costs under a new Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposal. CMS is looking to implement these improvements by expanding the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) Model nationwide through the Fiscal Year (FY) 2027 Hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) and Long-Term Care Hospital Prospective Payment System (LTCH PPS) proposed rule.
“Every year, Medicare funds thousands of knee, hip, and ankle replacements that help seniors keep up with their speedy little grandkids,” said CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. “This proposed expansion of our successful joint replacement pilot program would better align financial incentives with improved health outcomes—protecting taxpayer dollars while ensuring patients get the care they need before, during, and after surgery.”
