Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Emergency Care Technician Awarded Jessie Salone Nursing Scholarship
May 12, 2026 — This National Nurses Month, the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and Memorial Foundations are highlighting one of the Foundations’ longest-running nursing awards and its most recent recipient.
The Foundations recently awarded the Jessie Salone Student Nurse Scholarship to Macy Grimsrud, a Fort Lauderdale resident and emergency care technician in the pediatric emergency department at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Grimsrud is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Nova Southeastern University and plans to practice as a pediatric emergency medicine nurse after graduating.
The Jessie Salone Nursing Education Fund was established in 2006 by Michael Salone in honor of his mother, Jessie Salone, who served as a nurse at Memorial Regional Hospital from 1963 until her retirement in 1992. Inspired by the care and compassion she demonstrated throughout her nearly 30-year career, the fund supports nurses who exemplify those same values — either those who have completed their first year of nursing study or nurses continuing their education. Administered through Memorial Foundation, the scholarship is open to nurses and nursing students working anywhere within Memorial Healthcare System, including Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, where Grimsrud serves as an emergency care technician.

| Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital to Offer Free Cardiac Screenings to Broward County Residents
Made possible with Broward County and the Florida Panthers Foundation, the initiative aims to improve early detection and prevent heart disease across the community
April 20, 2026 – Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital is collaborating with Broward County to offer free cardiac screenings to Broward County residents who meet the program’s medical criteria. This initiative, the Broward County/Florida Panthers Preventive Heart Program, is funded through the support of both organizations and aims to expand access to preventive heart care across the community.
“By bringing together clinical expertise and community collaborations, we’re able to deliver life-saving cardiac screenings at no cost to residents,” said Jose Navia, M.D., Vice Chief of the Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute in the Cleveland Clinic Florida Market. “Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, and initiatives like this can help identify risks sooner, detect heart-related conditions before they become emergencies, and save lives.”
The cardiac screenings – specifically, coronary computed tomography angiography, a specialized CT scan of the heart – are offered to adults, particularly those age 45 and older, to encourage proactive steps toward preventive heart care. Broward County residents interested in participating can complete an online form to determine whether they meet the program’s criteria.

Baptist Health Foundation Presents Endowed Chair Ceremony for Aviva Abosch, M.D., Ph.D.
May 7, 2026 – Aviva Abosch, M.D., Ph.D., a neurosurgeon at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute, part of Baptist Health Brain and Spine Care, was installed as the Esernia Endowed Chair in Surgical Treatment of Adult Epilepsy and Movement Disorders at a ceremony and reception on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at Mr. C Miami – Coconut Grove. The program featured remarks by Jack Ziffer, Ph.D., M.D., EVP, chief clinical officer and chief physician executive of Baptist Health; Alex Villoch, CEO of Baptist Health Foundation; and Michael McDermott, M.D., system chief executive of Baptist Health Brain & Spine Care, chief medical executive and Irma & Kalman Bass Endowed Chair in Clinical Neuroscience at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute, as well as chair of the Department of Neurosciences at FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. The program was followed by a presentation by Dr. Abosch.
The endowed chair will support the work of Dr. Abosch, who serves as deputy director of Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute, as well as director of epilepsy surgery and co-director of functional neurosurgery. Dr. Abosch is a national authority on functional neurosurgery, deep brain stimulation and other forms of neuromodulation. The chair will support her research in deep brain stimulation and other advanced techniques to treat epilepsy and movement disorders. Established in 2025, the chair is funded by a $2 million gift from Anthony and Joyce Esernia and named in recognition of their generosity.

May 11, 2926 – Caregivers at Broward Health celebrated Mother’s Day by welcoming several newborns at Maternity Place at Broward Health Medical Center and Broward Health Coral Springs, marking meaningful moments for growing families across Broward County.
One of the first moms to deliver at Broward Health Medical Center was Tameika Morton, who welcomed baby JaMir at 6:16 a.m. on May 11, 2026.
Alongside Wayne Larson, M.D., an obstetrics-gynecologist at Broward Health Medical Center, Tameika delivered a healthy baby boy at 39 weeks, weighing 6 pounds, 3 ounces.
JaMir is also one of the first babies born in Broward Health Medical Center’s newly renovated Maternity Place Labor & Delivery Unit.
In a full-circle moment at Broward Health Coral Springs, Coconut Creek resident Angilee Jabar welcomed her first child, baby Zakai, 23 years after she was born at the same hospital. She was delivered by Mitchell Feldman, M.D., an obstetrics-gynecologist at Broward Health Coral Springs, the same physician who delivered her more than two decades ago.

Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute and Lakeland Regional Health Hollis Cancer Center Expand their Academic Cancer Care Network With Addition of Three Advanced Oncology Specialists
Medical oncologists bring unique expertise in complex blood cancers and solid malignancies to Central Florida.
May 12, 2026 — The partnership announced in January between Lakeland Regional Health (LRH) and the Tampa General Hospital (TGH) academic health system has taken its next step in developing a cancer care network serving Central Florida by adding medical oncology subspecialists to the Hollis Cancer Center in Lakeland.
Led by Dr. Ankit Kansagra, medical oncologist and associate vice president of Oncology Integration & Community Alignment, TGH Cancer Institute, the team comprises Dr. David Swoboda, clinical director of Leukemia, TGH Cancer Institute, and Dr. Noman Ashraf, director, Medical Oncology, TGH Cancer Institute. The team of experienced medical oncologists will work together to expand highly specialized cancer care, strengthen research collaboration and broaden access to clinical trials across the region.
Through the new, integrated network patients can receive top-tier expertise, including access to treatments not currently available locally, such as immunotherapy for complex blood cancers.

Cleveland Clinic Releases New National Report on the State of Women’s Health in the U.S.
Findings show many women are more concerned about affording care than developing serious diseases — with gaps in prevention and clear information shaping their decisions
May 7, 2026 – A new national report from Cleveland Clinic’s Women’s Comprehensive Health and Research Center highlights gaps in how women across generations understand, access and manage their health. The findings show that financial concerns, inconsistent engagement with preventive care and limited access to clear, credible information are influencing health decisions at every stage of life. For many women, these challenges are not abstract — they are shaping real decisions about when and how to seek care.
Based on a survey of 2,000 women ages 18 and older, the report finds that while many women are taking steps to support their health, several challenges continue to affect how and when they seek care. Nearly half of women (45%) say their biggest concern as they age is not having enough money to take care of their health — more than those who cite serious conditions like cancer, heart disease or Alzheimer’s disease as their primary concern.
“This report makes one thing clear: women’s health is in crisis with persistent and consequential gaps in how women understand and manage their health across the lifespan,” said Maria Shriver, founder of the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement (WAM) at Cleveland Clinic and co‑founder of the Cleveland Clinic Women’s Comprehensive Health and Research Center. “Too many women lack clear information about their health risks, and too many are unsure whether they can afford the care they need. By addressing these gaps in knowledge, access, and affordability, we have a meaningful opportunity to improve health outcomes for women and their families.”

Sarasota Memorial Launches Clinical Trial to Improve Prenatal Screening for Expecting Families
May 12, 2026 – Pregnant women on the Suncoast have the opportunity to take part in a global study aimed at improving prenatal screening and helping families understand their baby’s health before birth.
Led locally by obstetrician-gynecologist Larry Matsumoto, MD, FACOG, of Sarasota Memorial’s First Physicians Group, in conjunction with Sarasota Memorial’s Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute, the ADVANCE study uses a single maternal blood sample to screen both mother and baby for a range of genetic conditions that can affect growth, development, and health, with results provided in one clear report.
The study is sponsored by BillionToOne Inc., known for its prenatal screening platform UNITY®, which combines maternal carrier screening with single-gene prenatal testing from a single sample. If a mother is identified as a carrier for certain genetic conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, sickle cell disease, and alpha-thalassemia, additional testing is automatically performed on the same maternal blood sample to assess the baby’s risk.

Florida Blue Expands Maternal Health and Well-Being Support for High-Risk Members
May 6, 2026 — Reaffirming its commitment to improving maternal health outcomes, Florida Blue, the state’s leading health insurer, is increasing access to maternal health and well-being support through Canopie, a digital program available at no additional cost to eligible high-risk pregnant and postpartum members. HSS Research Supports Routine Imaging Before and After ACL Surgery in Growing Children
May 8, 2026 – At this year’s Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America (POSNA) annual meeting, researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) presented two studies evaluating outcomes for three of the most common anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction techniques designed to protect open growth plates in young patients who are still growing. The findings highlight the importance of using imaging before and after surgery to accurately identify and monitor alignment issues and capitalize on opportunities for early intervention.

Oral small-molecule GLP-1 drugs penetrate deep into the brain to suppress cravings
NIH-funded research identifies new mechanism of action for next-generation weight-loss drugs
May 6, 2026 – A National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded study has found that an emerging class of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs suppress eating for pleasure, or hedonic feeding, in mice by modulating a reward circuit deep within the brain. This newly charted pathway — separate from previously described mechanisms that broadly affect appetite — could be an avenue by which GLP-1s treat other dysfunctions in reward processing, such as substance use disorder.
In the study, researchers at the University of Virginia specifically investigated small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved orforglipron, which can be taken orally and are cheaper to produce than their injectable counterparts.

NIH-funded study suggests that testosterone suppresses brain tumor growth in males
Findings may warrant exploration of the hormones as glioblastoma treatment
May 6, 2026 – In a new National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded study, scientists at Cleveland Clinic discovered that hormones associated with male development may play a key role in limiting the growth of brain tumors in men. The research team found that the loss of androgen hormones, such as testosterone, in a preclinical model of glioblastoma drove tumor growth by inducing local inflammation and triggering the production of stress hormones. In an analysis of data from more than 1,300 men with glioblastoma, the authors found that supplemental testosterone was significantly associated with improved survival, which was consistent with their preclinical experiments.
