UHealth Achieves Florida’s First ANCC Magnet with Distinction Recognition Program®
August 26, 2025 — UHealth – University of Miami Health System has been honored with the prestigious Magnet with Distinction from the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet with Distinction Recognition Program®, making it the first system in Florida to receive this recognition. With this elite designation, UHealth is launched into the top 10% of U.S. hospitals in the nation, just one of 639 achieving Magnet status, and is among fewer than 1% holding Magnet with Distinction.
Magnet designation, the gold standard of nursing excellence, is a rigorous, voluntary credential pursued by and awarded to healthcare organizations deeply committed to delivering exceptional patient care, fostering innovation and advancing professional nursing practice. Magnet with Distinction is an even higher level of recognition, achieved by only a small fraction of Magnet-designated hospitals, acknowledging health care organizations that demonstrate the absolute highest standards of nursing excellence, patient outcomes and innovation.
“We are enormously proud to have earned Magnet designation with Distinction,” said Elizabeth L. Vieito-Smith, D.N.P., RN, chief nursing officer for UHealth. “It is a testament to our relentless pursuit of excellence, and we couldn’t have achieved it without our nearly 4,300 nursing staff members, and the support and collaboration of our dedicated leadership, faculty and staff across the UHealth system.”

Sarasota Memorial’s Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute Joins Clinical Trial for Patients with Hard-to-Treat Ovarian Cancer
August 26, 2025 – Women with advanced or recurring ovarian, peritoneal, or fallopian tube cancer may be eligible to participate in a new clinical trial offered by Sarasota Memorial’s Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute.
Led locally by principal investigator Beverly Long, MD, and sub-investigator Toni Kilts, DO, gynecologic oncology surgeons with SMH’s First Physicians Group and Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute, the research study is testing different dosing schedules for the investigational drug Mirvetuximab Soravtansine in women with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer and related cancers. The cancer drug targets the protein folate receptor-alpha, or FR-alpha, which is found in high levels on many ovarian, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancer cells.
By targeting FR-alpha, Mirvetuximab Soravtansine is designed to identify these cancer cells more precisely, while limiting damage to nearby healthy cells. By testing different dosing schedules, the study aims to elevate the clinical benefit of the treatment with a convenient dosing schedule.

HHS adopts AMA-backed changes to Medicare’s Plan Finder
August 26, 2025 – The AMA strongly supports the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) recent decision to upgrade Medicare Plan Finder so patients can choose plans that actually include their trusted physicians and hospitals.
This direction mirrors AMA’s January 2025 advocacy (PDF) calling for HHS to integrate plan network data into Plan Finder. Once this is complete, patients no longer will be forced to click through multiple websites just to confirm if their physicians are in-network.
“When choosing their Medicare plan, patients need easy access to accurate, accessible and actionable information. Informed decision-makers have fewer regrets,” said AMA President Bobby Mukkamala, M.D. “We commend HHS’ intent and commitments—and see this as a clear response to persistent AMA advocacy on behalf of physicians and our patients.”
