BROWARD HEALTH PRESIDENT & CEO SHANE STRUM NAMED CHAIR OF AMERICA’S ESSENTIAL HOSPITALS’ POLICY COMMITTEE
June 15, 2023 – Shane Strum, President & CEO of Broward Health, one of the 10 largest public healthcare systems in the nation, was confirmed as the chair of America’s Essential Hospitals’ Policy Committee.
America’s Essential Hospitals is a nonprofit trade association representing more than 300 member hospitals dedicated to equitable, high-quality care for all. The policy committee develops and recommends policy principles and positions to the association board.
“It’s an honor to chair this committee that helps establish the association’s guiding principles on the complex policy issues facing safety net hospitals today,” said Strum. “Together, members of the committee look forward to helping guide the future of U.S. safety net hospitals.”

MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM RAISES WAGES FOR NEARLY 2,000 EMPLOYEES
Health Leader Makes Additional $2 Million Investment in its Workforce
June 16, 2023 – Memorial Healthcare System, which employs more than 15,000 South Floridians, has raised its minimum hourly wage to $16. The increase positively impacts nearly 2,000 people, more than 10% of Memorial’s workforce, and took effect earlier this month.
The increase was unanimously approved by commissioners of the South Broward Hospital District, the public healthcare system’s governing board. It represents an additional investment of more than $2 million in the regional workforce.
“We’ve taken this step because we’re dedicated to providing all members of the Memorial family with the resources they need to remain personally and professionally satisfied,” said K. Scott Wester, president and CEO of Memorial Healthcare System. “By investing in our employees, we also invest in their families, and the larger South Florida community we serve.”

TGH Board of Directors announce that the nationally recognized president and CEO will shepherd the leading academic health system for the next ten years.
Tampa,FL – June 21, 2023 – Florida Health Sciences Center d/b/a Tampa General Hospital (TGH), one of Florida’s preeminent academic health systems, announced today that president and CEO John Couris has accepted an offer from the Board of Directors to extend the terms of his employment agreement for an additional 10 years.

Broward Health doctors and caregivers celebrate cancer survivors at Broward Health North’s Cancer Survivor Celebration.
June 16, 2023 – More than 30 patients who have received care at Broward Health North were the guests of honor at a cancer survivor celebration dinner at the hospital on Monday, June 12.
Anyone living with a history of cancer, starting from the time of their initial diagnosis, is considered a cancer survivor.
“Events like this provide cancer survivors an opportunity to connect and support each other,” said hematologist/oncologist Mehmet Hepgur, M.D., Broward Health Physician Group. “It’s very meaningful to them and heart-warming for those of us who care for them along the way.”

HEALTHY LEE’S PRIDE, NOT PREJUDICE CONFERENCE ADVANCES LGBTQIA+ HEALTH AND WELLNESS AWARENESS IN THE SOUTHWEST FLORIDA COMMUNITY
June 20, 2023 — In the United States, 5.6% of adults identify as LGBTQIA+, up from 4.5% in 2017, according to a 2021 Gallup Poll. As part of Pride Month in June, and to encourage and train mental health clinicians and other healthcare professionals interested in caring for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and agender (LGBTQIA+) community, the Healthy Lee Behavioral Health Coalition of SWFL will host a one-day conference for healthcare practitioners in our area.
The June 28 event called Pride, Not Prejudice will feature eight speakers who will present on a variety of topics (listed below). Two initiatives aim to improve Black maternal and infant health by integrating and increasing doula services and by establishing an OB/GYN clinic in a maternity care desert. The third initiative aims to provide community-based safety and other support services as a means of reducing violence.
MIAMI, June 19, 2023 — The Health Foundation of South Florida, the region’s largest philanthropic organization focused on achieving health equity in historically underserved communities, announced more than $2 million in funding for two initiatives aimed at addressing Black maternal health inequities in Miami-Dade and Broward counties and a community-based peacemaker program in Liberty City and Overtown. The grants were unveiled at the second annual Black Health Summit, which took place earlier this month at Florida Memorial University and drew more than three hundred healthcare, education, philanthropy, and community leaders to discuss the current state of Black health in South Florida. The Summit aimed to identify actionable solutions and collaborations for addressing longstanding inequities impacting health and well-being for Black residents across the region
