Only Six Minutes of Your Time Physicians: Help Florida Seniors Make Informed Decisions Miami-Dade and Broward County Medical Associations along with other county associations in Florida are promoting this survey:
Your input is extremely valuable to Florida’s seniors as they evaluate their options between Traditional Medicare and the various Medicare Advantage Plans available.
Each October, seniors are inundated with marketing and promotional materials promoting the benefits of switching from Traditional Medicare to Medicare Advantage. However, these materials often lack sufficient information about the rights and protections seniors may be relinquishing by making that switch.
The feedback provided by physicians through this survey will be instrumental in helping Florida’s seniors make informed decisions. Physician organizations across the state are working to develop an annual guide to help seniors and their caregivers assess plan performance and choose the option that best fits their needs.
We encourage you to invite fellow physicians to complete the survey. The more data we collect, the more comprehensive and impactful this guide will be for Florida’s senior community. |

Cleveland Clinic Study Shows Greater Long-Term Benefits of Bariatric Surgery Compared to GLP-1 Medicines
Surgery lowers risks of death, heart disease, kidney failure, and eye damage more than GLP-1 medicines
September 16, 2025 – A large Cleveland Clinic study has found that people with obesity and type 2 diabetes who undergo weight-loss surgery live longer and face fewer serious health problems compared with those treated with GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines alone.
Patients who had weight-loss surgery (also known as bariatric or metabolic surgery) lost more weight, achieved better blood sugar control, and relied less on diabetes and heart medications over 10 years. The research is published in Nature Medicine.
“Even with today’s best medicines, metabolic surgery offers unique and lasting benefits for people with obesity and diabetes,” said Ali Aminian, M.D., director of Cleveland Clinic’s Bariatric & Metabolic Institute and primary investigator of the study. “The benefits we observed went beyond weight loss. Surgery was linked to fewer heart problems, less kidney disease, and even lower rates of diabetes-related eye damage.”
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists are a class of medications widely used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity and to reduce health risks. Both metabolic surgery and GLP-1 medicines improve cardiovascular health and metabolism.
The M6 study (Macrovascular and Microvascular Morbidity and Mortality after Metabolic Surgery versus Medicines) followed 3,932 adults with diabetes and obesity who received care at Cleveland Clinic for up to 10 years. Among them, 1,657 underwent metabolic surgery (including gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy), while 2,275 were treated with GLP-1 medicines (including liraglutide, dulaglutide, exenatide, semaglutide, and tirzepatide).

Florida Blue Foundation Invests in Community Programs to Strengthen Food Security and Combat Chronic Conditions
Sept. 15, 2025 – As the nation observes Hunger Action Month in September, the Florida Blue Foundation, the philanthropic affiliate of Florida Blue and part of the GuideWell family of companies, is awarding $3 million in grants supporting eight community-based food programs across the state to reduce the burden of chronic health conditions and increase access to healthy food in rural communities.
Why it matters: Food insecurity is one of the most significant social drivers of health in the country, contributing to increased risks of chronic diseases including obesity, heart disease, and certain types of cancers. In addition, higher food costs, recent funding cuts to local food banks, and other factors are driving increased demand for food aid.
By the numbers: 2.9 million Floridians lack access to healthy food—including 800,000 children.
What they’re saying:
“Food is the foundation of health, and yet, far too many individuals and families in Florida struggle to access the nutritious food they need,” said Susan Towler, executive director of the Florida Blue Foundation. “By partnering with organizations on the front lines of this issue, we are working together to extend their reach, deepen their impact, and increase access to the healthy foods families need to thrive.”

Mayo Clinic study reveals hidden causes of heart attacks in younger adults, especially women
September 15, 2025 – A new Mayo Clinic study finds that many heart attacks in people under 65 — especially women — are caused by factors other than clogged arteries, challenging long-standing assumptions about how heart attacks occur in younger populations.
Study findings published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology examined over 15 years of data from the Rochester Epidemiology Project, providing the most comprehensive population evaluation of heart attack causes in people aged 65 and younger.
More than half of heart attacks in women under age 65 were caused by nontraditional factors, such as spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), embolism and other conditions unrelated to artery-clogging plaque. Heart attack incidence was significantly lower in women than in men — but when women did have heart attacks, the underlying causes were often misdiagnosed.
SCAD, which typically affects younger, otherwise healthy women, was frequently missed and misclassified as a typical heart attack due to plaque buildup. The most common cause of heart attack in both sexes was atherosclerosis, or artery-clogging plaque, but this accounted for only 47% of heart attacks in women, compared to 75% in men. Five-year mortality rates were highest in people who had heart attacks triggered by stressors such as anemia or infection, even though these patients had lower heart injury levels.

Leading cancer research centers reinforce importance of safe and effective HPV vaccination to prevent cancer
62 NCI-designated cancer centers, leading national organizations and the University of Puerto Rico Comprehensive Cancer Center jointly endorse statement Nationally, HPV vaccination coverage has stagnated, falling short of national goals
September 16, 2025 – Today, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, along with 61 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Cancer Centers, leading national organizations and the University of Puerto Rico Comprehensive Cancer Center, endorsed a joint statement urging the nation’s health care systems, physicians and other health care providers and professionals, parents, caregivers and the public to promote and choose human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for cancer prevention.
HPV vaccination is safe and works to prevent six types of cancer (oropharyngeal, cervical, anal, vaginal, vulvar and penile). Recently released National Immunization Survey (NIS)-Teen data show no gains in HPV vaccination over the last few years, indicating urgent action is needed to ensure children today are protected against HPV-related cancers they may develop in adulthood.
“HPV vaccines offer the opportunity to eliminate the occurrence of cancer across six organs in which chronic HPV infections drive cancer development,” said Ernest Hawk, M.D., vice president and division head of Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences at MD Anderson. “Knowing we can prevent thousands of future cancers, we are proud to endorse this joint statement with our colleagues across the U.S.”

Lee Health’s Golisano Children’s Hospital’s Safe Kids SWFL Offers Free Car Seat Checks for the Community on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Cape Coral Fire Station 6 and the Family Services Center in Charlotte County
Sept. 16, 2025 — In observance of Child Passenger Safety Week, Lee Health’s Golisano Children’s Hospital and Safe Kids SWFL will offer free car seat checks for local parents on Saturday, September 27, also known as National Seat Check Saturday, a day dedicated to educating families on the proper installation and use of child car seats.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car crashes are a leading cause of death for children aged one to 13 years old. Three HSS Studies Presented at ESRA Annual Meeting Show that Ear Acupuncture During Hip Replacement Surgery Reduces Opioid Use
September 12, 2025 – Researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) have found that a specialized form of acupuncture applied to the outer ear during hip replacement surgery reduces pain after the operation and lessens opioid use over the weeks to follow. The findings of three studies assessing ear acupuncture for inpatient and outpatient total hip arthroplasty were presented at the 42nd Annual Congress of the European Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy (ESRA) in Oslo, Norway.
“Acupuncture helps amplify the body’s healing ability by increasing endorphins and decreasing inflammatory proteins,” explained Stephanie Cheng, MD, anesthesiologist at HSS, and senior author of all three studies. “We found that among patients who received ear acupuncture during surgery, there was a significant decrease in the use of opioids in the recovery room, a significant reduction in pain scores immediately after surgery and one day later, and a trend toward lower opioid usage 30 days after the operation.”

NIH launches consortium to reduce risk of stillbirth in the U.S.
More than 60% of the nearly 24,000 stillbirth cases annually remain unexplained.
September 16, 2025 – The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched effort aimed at reducing the rate of preventable stillbirths in the United States. Investigators will develop tools, devices and other technologies that have the potential to affect diagnosis and prevention efforts relevant to stillbirth, which occurs in 1 in 160 deliveries in the U.S. About 23,600 stillbirths at 20 weeks or greater gestation are reported annually.
More than 60% of stillbirth cases remain unexplained even after exclusion of common causes, such as congenital abnormalities, genetic factors, and obstetric complications. NIH will fund the Stillbirth Research Consortium for more than $37 million over five years, pending the availability of funds, with $750,000 in co-funding from the Department of Health and Human Services.
“This consortium will provide an integrated, collaborative program to support cutting edge research to identify the root causes of stillbirth and inform evidence-based strategies to address stillbirth risks,” said Alison Cernich, Ph.D., acting director of NIH’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. “Too many families needlessly face the grief of stillbirth.”

CMS Launches Landmark $50 Billion Rural Health Transformation Program
New Federal Program Aims to Transform Rural Health Care Nationwide
September 15, 2025 – Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) unveiled details on how states can apply to receive funding from the $50 billion Rural Health Transformation Program created under the Working Families Tax Cuts Act to strengthen health care across rural America. This unprecedented investment is designed to empower states to transform the existing rural health care infrastructure and build sustainable health care systems that expand access, enhance quality of care, and improve outcomes for patients.
“Rural communities are the bedrock of America. They have waited too long for Washington to act. Now, at last, we are acting with the largest investment ever made to improve health care for rural Americans,” said U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “This $50 billion program is about delivering dignity and dependable care to rural communities, making sure every American has access to affordable, high-quality treatment.”
“This program is a historic investment that will catalyze needed change in rural health systems and improve lives for generations to come,” said CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. “For too long, when it comes to health care access and infrastructure, we’ve left behind the backbone of America. That stops now with this program that will spark real change for rural health care. ”
The Rural Health Transformation Program invites all 50 states to apply for funding to address each state’s specific rural health challenges. The Program enables states to reimagine care delivery and develop innovative, enduring, state-driven solutions to tackle the root causes of poor health outcomes specific to rural America.

HHS Makes Push to Stop Youth Vaping
SEPTEMBER 15, 2025—The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Surgeon General today announced its Youth Vaping Resource Guide [PDF, 7.94 MB] to combat the ongoing youth vaping epidemic. Despite recent declines in use, e-cigarettes remain the most commonly used tobacco product among middle and high school students, with more than 1.6 million youth reporting current use in 2024.
Up to 85% of e-cigarette devices and pods sold in U.S. retail outlets are illegal products. Federal enforcement efforts have seized millions of unauthorized devices, but illegal sales persist, threatening the health of young people nationwide.
Last week, HHS and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the seizure of 4.7 million units of mostly Chinese unauthorized e-cigarette products with an estimated retail value of $86.5 million. The seizure was part of a joint federal operation in Chicago to examine incoming shipments and prevent illegal e-cigarettes from entering the country. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and FDA Commissioner Marty Makary joined DOJ Secretary Pam Bondi at a press conference highlighting the seizure.
“Vaping directly threatens children’s brain development, mental health, and long-term well-being,” Secretary Kennedy said. “We’re acting now to protect the next generation—giving families, schools, and communities the clear warnings they need to keep kids safe from nicotine addiction and illegal products.”
