RITA BUNCH ADDED TO MEMORIAL’S LEADERSHIP TEAM
December 19, 2025 – Rita Bunch, FACHE, a senior executive with nearly three decades of experience as a healthcare leader, has been named chief operating officer at Memorial Regional Hospital. The 863-bed facility, one of the largest in Florida, is the flagship of the Hollywood-based Memorial Healthcare System.
Bunch was most recently market CEO at Erlanger East and North in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Prior to that, she held leadership positions at Virginia-based Sentara Health, where she teamed with current Memorial Regional Hospital CEO Paul Gaden.

Health Choice Network Achieves Experience Level 6 for EHR Satisfaction as Measured by the KLAS Arch Collaborative
December 19, 2025 – Health Choice Network (HCN), the first funded nation-wide collaboration of health centers, announced today that they achieved Experience Level 6 for Electronic Health Record (EHR) satisfaction measured by the KLAS Arch Collaborative EHR Survey.
The 2025 survey results confirm that HCN health centers utilizing Epic Powered by HCN are among the most satisfied Epic users in the nation. HCN earned the prestigious KLAS Level 6: Elite EHR Experience designation, a distinction reserved for organizations demonstrating outstanding EHR usability and user experience.
In 2020, before any HCN health center had transitioned to Epic, the network’s overall satisfaction score was 30.9. By 2025, with all health centers who completed the survey live on Epic Powered by HCN, satisfaction skyrocketed to 68.6. Satisfaction didn’t just rise – it more than doubled after moving to Epic.

FAU Receives Transformational Gift for Scholarships, Programs
Gift Benefits School of Environmental, Coastal, and Ocean Sustainability
December 19, 2025 – Florida Atlantic University has received a transformational gift from Wayne and Lucretia Weiner in support of the School of Environmental, Coastal, and Ocean Sustainability (ECOS). The couple’s generous gift significantly expands scholarships and programs to foster successful advancement among undergraduates, graduates and postdoctoral fellows focused on the environment. It also provides resources for interdisciplinary research teams, faculty, a professor-in-residence program, and partnerships that bolster environmental sustainability.
“Wayne and Lucretia’s investment in ECOS puts Florida Atlantic at the forefront of environmental research, engagement, and outreach today and into the future,” said FAU President Adam Hasner. “We appreciate their support of FAU students, and value their partnership in educating the next generation of environmental scientists.”
ECOS was established just two years ago as a partnership between the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and Florida Atlantic’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute to amplify the impact and visibility of environmental programs. In 2024, the Weiners made the first significant donation to ECOS. NEW IMMUNOTHERAPY PROVIDES A TREATMENT OPTION FOR LUNG CANCER PATIENTS
December 18, 2025 – The pain in Yolanda Ortiz’s chest was relentless, but what was diagnosed after a PET scan at Memorial Hospital West may have been worse: stage four cancer that had spread from the lungs to her liver and bones.
In the nearly three years since the devastating news, Ortiz has bravely battled for her life but, until recently, had little to show for the effort. Her specific disease, extensive-stage small cell lung cancer, was progressing and mostly resistant to traditional chemotherapy. Other treatment options were limited, and hope was in short supply.
It’s been said it’s always darkest before the dawn, and that appropriately describes where Ortiz was before Memorial Cancer Institute doctors informed her that an immunotherapy drug called Tarlatamab had received FDA approval. A bispecific T-cell engager (BiTE), the treatment works by infusing an antibody that binds a specific protein on cancer cells and the body’s own immune system (its T-cells). By bringing cancer and T cells close together, they help the T-cells recognize and destroy the cancer.

December 18, 2025 – Holiday magic returned to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital as Hollywood Fire Rescue, joined by the Hollywood Police Department, hosted its 3rd Annual Holiday Parade for patients and families.
A festive convoy of fire trucks, including a ladder truck, an engine, a rescue, and more, arrived with vehicles decorated in holiday spirit. Santa will make a dramatic entrance, lifted four stories high in the bucket of a fire truck to wave to children watching from their windows above. The Grinch also made an appearance, stirring up mischief before Hollywood police step in to save the day and restore the spirit of the season!

Innovative AI Tool, CORAL, Accurately Predicts Genetic Subtypes and Patient Outcomes in Multiple Myeloma Without Costly Genomic Tests
Technology facilitates more individualized and precise treatment planning – even in resource-limited settings; Wins HealthTree Foundation’s Innovation Award
December 19, 2025 – C. Ola Landgren, M.D., Ph.D., received HealthTree Foundation’s prestigious 2025 Innovation Award for his work in developing CORAL, a new research tool that leverages AI to predict individual outcomes and guide treatment decisions in patients with multiple myeloma.
Using deep learning to read standard bone marrow biopsy slides like pages in a book, CORAL spots patterns in a patient’s cancer to accurately predict genetic subtypes and patient outcomes, bypassing the traditional need for expensive, time-consuming genomic tests.
Landgren, director of the Sylvester Myeloma Institute at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, received the award during the 2025 American Society of Hematology conference in Orlando earlier this month.
“Under Dr. Landgren’s leadership, Sylvester Myeloma Institute is developing novel strategies to better define multiple myeloma subtypes, which will help to facilitate more individualized treatment approaches and pave the way for precision medicine in the field of multiple myeloma. This will lead to optimized clinical outcomes for individual multiple myeloma patients,” said Jenny Ahlstrom, founder and CEO of HealthTree Foundation, an organization that provides education, community and research for blood cancer patients.

Tristan Wirfs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Friends, Visit Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH to Spread Holiday Cheer, Distribute Toys
Wirfs teamed up with the Starlight Children’s Foundation to help children hospitalized for the holidays.
December 19, 2025 — Tristan Wirfs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers captain and two-time All-Pro offensive lineman, visited the young patients at the Muma Children’s Hospital at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) for the second year in a row on Friday, Dec. 19. Wirfs partnered with the Starlight Children’s Foundation to deliver toys, happiness and comfort when families need them the most.
Wirfs, whose special relationship with the Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH has led him to match donations to the TGH Foundation’s annual Operation Santa campaign for two years, says that making the season merrier for families is meaningful to him.
“Helping these kids is such an incredible feeling,” Wirfs said. “Walking through Muma Children’s Hospital, being able to put a smile on a kid’s face at Christmas — it is really impactful for me. Leaving the hospital after last year’s visit, I was already making plans to come back again this year. I’m honored to give back in this way.”
He was joined by Bucs teammates Charlie Heck, Benjamin Chukwuma and Ben Bredeson. Wirfs also teamed up with Starlight to double his impact. As part of its Give Happiness campaign, Starlight aims to help 80,000 hospitalized kids nationwide this holiday season through Starlight Toy Deliveries with its partners, collaborators and ambassadors.

Cancer Alliance Network receives $175,000 grant from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation
December 18, 2025 – The Cancer Alliance Network has received a $175,000 grant from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation to help further its mission in supporting local cancer patients. The money will support patients through their treatment and will be used to fund the CANCares Financial Aid program and the CAN Family Respite Weekend at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point.
Cancer Alliance Network was formed in 2002 and is devoted to providing dignity to local cancer patients and their families in Collier and Lee counties through financial aid, resources and support. WHO: Updated COVID-19 vaccine composition recommendation
December 18, 2025- The World Health Organization (WHO) Technical Advisory Group on COVID-19 Vaccine Composition (TAG-CO-VAC) has issued updated recommendations. The objective of the updated vaccine composition is to enhance immune responses against circulating variants and provide broader protection, as SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, continues to evolve.
TAG-CO-VAC advises manufacturers that monovalent LP.8.1 is the recommended antigen for COVID-19 vaccines. Previously recommended antigens from the JN.1 lineage (JN.1 or KP.2) remain suitable alternatives. Vaccination remains important and should not be delayed while awaiting LP.8.1-based vaccines.
TAG-CO-VAC is an independent group of experts that advises WHO on vaccine composition. They convened in December 2025 for their twice-yearly meeting to review the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 variants; immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 vaccination; and the performance of vaccine products against circulating variants.

DECEMBER 18, 2025 — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today announced a series of proposed regulatory actions to carry out President Trump’s Executive Order directing HHS to end the practice of sex-rejecting procedures on children that expose young people to irreversible harm. These procedures include pharmaceutical or surgical interventions of specified types that attempt to align a child’s physical appearance or body with an asserted identity different from their sex.The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will release a notice of proposed rulemaking to bar hospitals from performing sex-rejecting procedures on children under age 18 as a condition of participation in Medicare and Medicaid programs. Nearly all U.S. hospitals participate in Medicare and Medicaid and this action is designed to ensure that the U.S. government will not be in business with organizations that intentionally or unintentionally inflict permanent harm on children. CMS is proposing this rulemaking pursuant to its longstanding authority in sections 1861(e)(9), 1871, and 1905(a) of the Social Security Act, which authorize the agency to establish standards necessary to protect patient health and safety in Medicare- and Medicaid-participating hospitals.CMS will release an additional notice of proposed rulemaking to prohibit federal Medicaid funding for sex-rejecting procedures on children under age 18. The same prohibition would apply to federal Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) funding for these procedures on individuals under age 19. HHS Announces Request for Information to Harness Artificial Intelligence to Deflate Health Care Costs and Make America Healthy Again
HHS to use regulation, reimbursement, and research & development levers to enable AI adoption and use in clinical care to evolve and propel the US health care system forward
December 19, 2025 – Today, advancing President Trump’s commitment to ensuring American leadership in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Secretary Kennedy’s vision to Make America Healthy Again, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the release of a Request for Information (RFI) seeking broad public input on how HHS can accelerate the adoption and use of artificial intelligence as part of clinical care for all Americans.
Through this RFI, HHS is inviting stakeholders to provide feedback on how the Department can use its regulatory, reimbursement, and research & development levers across all of HHS to enable AI adoption to propel the American health care system forward.
The HHS Office of the Deputy Secretary—which leads the Department’s AI strategy— seeks broad engagement on how HHS can accelerate adoption, including how AI can improve patient and caregiver experiences and outcomes, reduce provider burden and improve quality of care, and reduce health care costs for consumers and government.
“Artificial intelligence will be a transformative force for good across America.” said HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O’Neill. “We want to hear from you. Our efforts to accelerate AI adoption must be guided by the real needs and experiences of those developing these tools and delivering care.”
As AI-driven technologies continue to advance, HHS is focused on interoperability and ensuring that patient data is safe, secure, and only used as allowed under HIPAA. “Artificial intelligence is powered by data. Data liquidity and the trust patients and providers have in how data moves are essential,” said Dr. Thomas Keane, MD, MBA, Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy and National Coordinator for Health IT. “Through our interoperability work, we are designing for both, bringing true data access to patients and enabling AI. We look forward to hearing how these tools can best strengthen care.”

Lee Health : Free Autism Screening for Young Children
Dec. 16, 2025 — Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida offers free monthly autism spectrum disorder screenings for toddlers 18 months to five years of age.
The next screenings will be held on Jan. 9 and Jan. 14, 2026, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Pediatric Specialist Office, 15901 Bass Road, Suite 102, Fort Myers.
It is estimated that one in every 44 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined.
Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well.
