BROWARD HEALTH CELEBRATES RIBBON CUTTING OF NEW FREESTANDING EMERGENCY ROOM IN LIGHTHOUSE POINT
Broward Health leadership, city officials and community members officially cut the ribbon on the new Broward Health Lighthouse Point ER.
June 4, 2026 – Broward Health leadership, local dignitaries, physicians and community members recently gathered to celebrate the official ribbon cutting of Broward Health’s inaugural freestanding emergency room. The first of its kind in Lighthouse Point, the new ER significantly expands access to critical, high-quality emergency medical services for residents across northern Broward County.
Located at 5360 N. Federal Highway, Broward Health has transformed a 1.03-acre site into a state-of-the-art, two-story, 14,074-square-foot emergency room designed to deliver hospital-level emergency care to an anticipated 18,000 patients annually, with additional physician offices on the second floor.
There are 10 emergency exam rooms on the first floor and advanced diagnostic services, including CT scans and X-rays, point-of-care laboratory testing, a resuscitation room and ambulance access. Eight additional exam rooms on the second floor are designated for medical and physician offices, further enhancing access to care in the community.

Florida’s premier academic health system is the only health system in Tampa to be ranked across all seven specialties as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Specialized Care for 2026 by Newsweek.
June 8, 2026 – Tampa General Hospital is one of only four Florida health systems, and the only health system in Tampa, recognized across all seven specialties as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Specialized Care for 2026 by Newsweek, underscoring the academic health system’s continued investment in clinical excellence, innovation and multidisciplinary patient care.

Lee Health Board of Directors Selects Ben Spence as Next President and Chief Executive Officer
June 8, 2026 — After a nationwide search to identify the next leader of one of Florida’s largest health systems, the Lee Health Board of Directors has selected a familiar face to guide the organization into its next chapter.
Ben Spence, Lee Health’s Chief Operating Officer, has been named the health system’s next President and Chief Executive Officer, effective Oct. 1, 2026. The appointment follows an extensive national search conducted in partnership with Heidrick & Struggles. The Lee Health Board of Directors approved the appointment in a meeting on June 4.

Broward Health Joins First Responders and Healthcare Leaders at First There, First Care Conference
June 9, 2026- Broward Health was proud to participate in the annual First There, First Care Conference, South Florida’s premier event for emergency medical services (EMS) and nursing professionals.
The Fort Lauderdale event brought together paramedics, EMTs, nurses, physicians, fire rescue professionals and Broward Health’s partner organizations, including Memorial Healthcare System and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, for a week of education, hands-on training and collaboration.

Broward Health Continues Advancing Heart Care with First Non-Thermal Pulse Field Ablation Procedures Using New Medtronic Affera Technology
New technology can reduce complications, stroke risk and procedure time, offering safer and faster treatment
June 10, 2026 — Broward Health continues ushering in a new era for heart and vascular care in Broward County with the successful completion of the hospital system’s first two non-thermal pulse field ablation procedures using the newly acquired Medtronic Affera™ Mapping and Ablation System.
Jonathan P. Nieves, M.D., a cardiologist-electrophysiologist with the Broward Health Physician Group, performed the first procedure at Broward Health North. Jose L. Baez-Escudero, M.D., FHRS, FACC, systemwide chief of cardiology for the Broward Health Physician Group and chief of cardiac electrophysiology, was with Dr. Nieves for this first case at the Deerfield Beach hospital before performing the same procedure at Broward Health Medical Center.

FIU researchers find way to help cancer-fighting immune cells work longer and stronger
Florida International University scientists created a protective “sugar-coated” shield for CAR-T cells that helps them survive longer, fight tumors better and resist cancer’s defenses.
June 8, 2026 – Scientists at Florida International University may have found a way to make a powerful cancer treatment work even better.
The treatment, called CAR-T therapy, uses a patient’s own immune cells to fight cancer. Doctors remove special immune cells called T-cells from the body, genetically change them in a lab so they can recognize cancer, and then put them back into the patient to attack tumors. The therapy has already helped many people with serious blood cancers like lymphoma and leukemia.
But there is still a problem: cancer fights back.

Mayo Clinic maps hidden biology of common brain tumors
One of the most detailed maps to date of meningioma — the most common brain tumor in adults — reveals how the tumor’s surrounding environment helps drive disease behavior and patient outcomes, according to new research from Mayo Clinic.
The study, published in Nature Genetics and conducted in collaboration with scientists at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, combines several advanced laboratory techniques to examine tumors at an unprecedented level of detail, offering clues to why some meningiomas grow slowly while others recur or become more aggressive. The findings could lead to more precise ways to predict risk and guide treatment decisions.
Growing evidence suggests that traditional grading systems for meningioma do not fully capture the behavior of these complex tumors, prompting the development of molecular classification tools that more accurately predict which tumors are more likely to recur after surgery. These new findings build on recent developments by investigating the signal from individual cells rather than whole tumors, demonstrating that the tumor microenvironment — the mix of immune and support cells surrounding the tumor — plays a critical role in shaping outcomes.

FATHER’S DAY TAKES ON A NEW MEANING AS COMMUNITY-BASED CONNECTIONS, INC.
PRESENTS FATHERHOOD WEEK 2026 ACROSS BROWARD AND PALM BEACH COUNTIES JUNE 16-28
Multi-day initiative will highlight healing, mental health awareness, economic empowerment, and family strengthening through community-centered events
June 1, 2026 – Community-Based Connections, Inc. (CBCI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to delivering youth development, family strengthening, and community empowerment services to underserved populations, will present Fatherhood Week 2026, a multi-day community initiative taking place June 16–26 throughout Broward and Palm Beach counties. In recognition of Father’s Day, the community program is centered around the theme Fathers, Faith & Family.
The impactful initiative will provide fathers, father figures, and men throughout South Florida with opportunities to engage in conversations focused on mental health awareness, economic empowerment, family connection, domestic violence awareness, mentorship, and community support. It will focus on healing through shared experiences to break generational trauma, promote brotherhood and accountability, and build stronger support systems for fathers and families.

LEE HEALTH: Free Autism Screening for Young Children
May 28, 2026 — Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida offers free monthly autism spectrum disorder screenings for toddlers 18 months to five years of age.
The next screenings will be held on June 10 and June 12 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Pediatric Specialist Office, 15901 Bass Road, Suite 102, Fort Myers.
It is estimated that one in every 31 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined.
Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well.
The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The screenings are administered by an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders.
