ACHE OF SOUTH FLORIDA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: DAVID ZAMBRANA
David Zambrana, PhD, DNP, MBA, RN, began his career as a nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital, and through the years, has advanced to his current position as Jackson Health System’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. He said during that progression, “Many people along the way saw in me what I oftentimes may have not seen, and they certainly supported my growth.”
Part of that support came through advice Zambrana received from colleagues. “Early on, every one of my mentors said you’ve got to find a community of individuals along the way who are in similar roles to yourself.” He found that community at the American College of Healthcare Executives. A member for “at least a decade,” he considers ACHE to be an extension of his network – getting to routinely interact with colleagues and make new connections. “That’s what I sought early on, and that’s why I continue to maintain my membership. It’s also why I support others in joining.”
Zambrana said issues in health care are mostly universal, and while there is quite a bit of variability in hospitals, there is a strong sense of camaraderie among industry leaders. “I find great support in connecting with these individuals and sharing and learning from challenges and successes that others in my role or in this field have.”

BOWL-A-THON RAISES MONEY FOR SPIRITS OF THOSE ADAPTING TO PHYSICAL CHALLENGES
October 03, 2023 – Approximately 500 bowlers, many whose lives have improved through participation in sports adapted to meet their physical needs, helped raise more than $37,000 at the 7th Annual Adaptive Sports Bowl-A-Thon. The event, co-hosted by the Memorial Foundation and Memorial Rehabilitation Institute at SpareZ in Davie, will help underwrite the cost of sports/recreation programming and equipment for the physically-challenged community.
Exercise and athletic opportunities – including wheelchair basketball and tennis, cycling, water aerobics, chair yoga, and scuba – are a key part of the physical and mental recovery program for those with disabilities, but the lack of available programs and necessary equipment makes participation difficult for those who would benefit most.
The goal of the Adaptive Sports & Recreation Program at Memorial Regional Hospital South is to help individuals overcome these hardships.
“Getting back involved in sports was a life-changing event for me,” said Sherrod Nelson, an adaptive athlete who coaches the Memorial Rebab Sharks basketball team. “I was going through a lot of depression, but once I found wheelchair basketball, it gave me something to look forward to each day. It gave me comradery, competitiveness, and everything I was looking for as a human being.”

JUPITER MEDICAL CENTER RECOGNIZED ON NATIONAL LIST AS LEADER IN ONCOLOGY BECKER’S HEALTHCARE NAMED ANDERSON FAMILY CANCER INSTITUTE AS A “GREAT ONCOLOGY PROGRAM”
October 5, 2023 – Jupiter Medical Center is celebrating another recognition for its quality of care. Becker’s Healthcare recently recognized the independent not-for-profit health care system as a “Great Oncology Program.” The annual list features only 100 hospitals and health systems from across the country. Jupiter Medical Center was one of only five in Florida to achieve the standout recognition.
Becker’s Healthcare is the go-to source for health care decision-makers. Many of the programs that made the list have received national recognition from the National Cancer Institute and are ranked among the top hospitals for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report. The editors also considered centers with internationally known specialists, numerous clinical trials and exceptional safety ratings.
“This is an incredible distinction among our peers,” said Amit Rastogi, MD, MHCM, President and CEO of Jupiter Medical Center. “Cancer care is something we are deeply passionate about at Jupiter Medical Center, and this recognition reflects that we are leading the way in our region.”

CLEVELAND CLINIC PERFORMS WORLD’S FIRST IN-HUMAN GENE THERAPY FOR HYPERTROPHIC CARDIOMYOPATHY
Research nurse coordinator Danielle Kellner readies the infusion.
Patient is first person dosed in clinical trial
October 5, 2023 – Cleveland Clinic has infused a new gene therapy to deliver a working gene to address the leading cause of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in the first patient in the world as part of a clinical trial.
Myosin binding protein C3 (MYBPC3) gene mutations are the most common genetic cause of HCM. The gene therapy is designed to deliver a working MYBPC3 to the heart muscle through a one-time infusion of TN-201, which is a first-in-class adeno-associated virus-based gene therapy. The hope is that this new gene will restore normal levels of the protein, which regulates the contraction and relaxation of the heart muscle. In preclinical studies, a single dose restored normal levels of the protein which led to disease reversal.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a complex type of heart disease that causes thickening of the heart muscle, left ventricular stiffness and mitral valve changes. It affects an estimated 600,000 to 1.5 million Americans, or one in 500 people, but many of those patients go undiagnosed until the disease has progressed.
The cause of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy may be unknown or attributed to genetics, high blood pressure or aging, making it difficult to identify a high-risk population. Symptoms include chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue and syncope (fainting). Most people with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy have a low risk for sudden cardiac death. However, the condition is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in people under age 30.

MAYO CLINIC RESEARCHERS DEVELOP CALCULATION TO IDENTIFY HIGH-RISK MODERATE AORTIC STENOSIS PATIENTS
October 4, 2023 — Mayo Clinic researchers have developed a calculation that can help identify moderate aortic stenosis patients at higher risk of dying from the condition. According to new research published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, calculating the patient’s mean arterial pressure (AugMAP) is a simple and effective way to identify those patients who may benefit from more aggressive treatment strategies.
“Physiologically, AugMAP can be considered a marker of global left ventricular contractile function,” says Chieh-Ju Chao, M.D., senior associate consultant in the Mayo Clinic Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and the study’s first author. “AugMAP is easily calculated from the patient’s blood pressure and mean aortic gradient, and we found that low AugMAP is associated with higher mortality in all moderate aortic stenosis patient subgroups.”
Aortic stenosis is one of the most common cardiac valvular abnormalities, affecting about 5% of people older than 65 years. For most patients with moderate aortic stenosis, clinical guidelines call only for periodic monitoring with echocardiography, a test that uses sound waves to show how blood moves through the heart. However, growing evidence shows that patients with moderate aortic stenosis have poor longer-term survival rates and could benefit from earlier intervention.

MEDICAL PROPERTIES TRUST SELLS $105 MILLION OF ITS INTEREST IN STEWARD’S SYNDICATED ASSET-BACKED CREDIT FACILITY
August 2023 — Medical Properties Trust, Inc. (the “Company” or “MPT”) (NYSE: MPW) today announced that it has sold $105 million of its interest in Steward Health Care System’s (“Steward”) new syndicated asset-backed credit facility to a leading global asset manager with more than $100 billion in assets under management.
“As we said during our recent quarterly update, this new ABL facility significantly enhanced Steward’s available liquidity and flexibility at a time when its operations continue to perform well,” said Edward K. Aldag, Jr., Chairman, President and CEO. “MPT’s participation enabled Steward to close on this facility months ahead of maturity, removing market concerns around its ability to refinance. This prompt reduction in MPT’s commitment to the facility reflects the Company’s focus on reducing leverage as well as the continued strong level of participation interest from sophisticated third-party lenders.”
