New study finds metastatic colorectal cancer’s immune defenses may begin outside the cancer cell, challenging view held for decades Understanding where molecular malfunctions happen in colorectal cancer offers new avenues for treatment.
Sapporo, Japan and Tampa, FL – Oct. 14, 2026 – Researchers at Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, the University of South Florida and Tampa General Hospital, Tampa, Florida, have uncovered an important mechanism behind immune evasion in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). The finding challenges a 30-year-old theory in cancer research and identifies a molecular pathway that offers a new target for treatment.
The international study, published in the Journal of Experimental & Clinical Cancer Research, found that a biological process long thought to occur primarily inside cancer cells instead appears to play a central role in the environment outside metastatic tumors, where it is associated with immune suppression, more advanced disease and poorer patient survival.
In laboratory experiments, researchers blocked two key components of the pathway, allowing healthy killer T cells to return and successfully attack the cancer cells again. The findings could explain why most metastatic colorectal cancers respond poorly to certain immunotherapies and point toward strategies for making those treatments more effective.

Cleveland Clinic First in Ohio to Perform Abdominal Tumor Removal Using Highly Specialized Surgical Technique
Procedure allows surgeons to remove tumor involving major blood vessels outside of the body and reimplant patient’s own intestine
Oct. 15, 2026, Cleveland, OH: Cleveland Clinic is the first health system in Ohio to report performing a highly specialized surgery for complex abdominal tumors that involves removing and then re-implanting a patients’ own intestine. Called ex vivo intestinal auto-transplantation, the operation is performed at only a small number of centers worldwide.
Masato Fujiki, M.D., surgical director of Cleveland Clinic’s Intestinal Transplant Program, and a multidisciplinary team including hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeon Robert Naples, D.O., completed the procedure earlier this year. The operation involved removing the tumor, pancreatic head and entire small intestine as one unit. The tumor was then removed ex vivo, or outside of the patient’s body. The small intestine was re-implanted, or auto-transplanted, back into the patient using vascular and gastrointestinal reconstruction techniques.
“This is a rare and highly complex surgery that requires a specialized team with expertise in intestinal transplantation, complex abdominal surgery and vascular reconstruction,” said Dr. Fujiki.
“For carefully selected patients whose tumors cannot be removed in a traditional surgery, intestinal auto-transplantation provides another treatment option while avoiding the need for a donor organ and lifelong immunosuppression.”

Barry University Secures $500,000 in State Appropriations for First Responder Risk Detection Training Funding will help first responders recognize warning signs among their peers and intervene before a crisis escalates
October 16, 2026 – Barry University has secured $500,000 in state funding to implement a uniform, evidence-based First Responder Risk Detection Training Program that improves the quality, consistency, and safety of suicide crisis responses across Florida. The appropriation, advocated for by Barry University and supported through a bipartisan effort by state Senator Shevrin Jones, and Representative Alex Rizo, was approved and signed as part of the 2026-27 state budget.
The program is expected to begin rolling out this fall and will support training for close to 8,000 first responders across Florida. Funding will cover operations, program execution, curriculum development and training for instructors, who will be current or former first responders.
First responders across the U.S.respond to a suicide-related call every 11 minutes, placing them on the front lines of one of the state’s most complex mental health and public safety challenges. Within the first responder community, the toll of repeated exposure to trauma, crisis and loss continues to grow, with more suicides among first responders reported each year.

October 13, 2026 – A Sarasota-based documentary celebrating the strength and resilience of breast cancer survivors has received a key sponsorship this month from Sarasota Memorial Health Care System’s Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute, helping bring inspiring stories of survivorship to audiences around the world.

MAYO: Large-scale study advances detection of DNA mutations across the human genome
OCTOBER 15, 2026 — Researchers in a Mayo Clinic-led study have shown how to detect a broad range of DNA mutations in noncancerous human tissues and across the genome. The analysis, drawing on more than 90 trillion DNA letters of sequencing data, could help scientists study when these changes arise — from early development through aging — and how they contribute to cancer and other diseases.
Published in Cell, the study is the flagship paper in a package of roughly a dozen publications from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Common Fund’s Somatic Mosaicism across Human Tissues, or SMaHT, Network. The network includes more than 300 members from more than two dozen U.S. universities and hospitals. Researchers evaluated approaches for detecting somatic mutations ranging from single-letter DNA changes to large deletions, insertions and rearrangements.
Alexej Abyzov, Ph.D., a Mayo Clinic professor of biomedical informatics who leads the Somatic Mutations in Development and Aging Laboratory, is the corresponding author of the Cell study.
“We often think of the human genome as a single, fixed sequence, but every person is a mosaic of cells that acquire genetic changes over time,” Dr. Abyzov says. “As we have increasingly recognized in recent years, these mutations are relevant not only to cancer but also to a broad range of age-related diseases.”

MAYO : Inflammatory breast cancer: Fast-moving form often lacks lump as warning sign OCTOBER 14, 2026 — You probably know that a lump in the breast may be a symptom of breast cancer. But what about breast cancer that develops without that warning sign? Inflammatory breast cancer is a fast-moving cancer that doesn’t usually form a lump; instead, the skin on one breast changes rapidly, explains Tina Hieken, M.D., a surgical oncologist at Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center. Inflammatory breast cancer often comes with symptoms that mimic inflammation of the breast, such as a change in skin color to a pink, red, purple or bruised appearance, unusual warmth in the affected breast, and orange peel-like skin, a symptom known as peau d’orange.
As a result, inflammatory breast cancers may be misdiagnosed as cellulitis, mastitis, Paget’s disease of the breast, or other more benign conditions.
Inflammatory breast cancer accounts for roughly 1% to 5% of breast cancer diagnoses but 10% of breast cancer deaths, statistics show.
“When there are changes in the skin of the breast, particularly in women who aren’t nursing and do not have breastfeeding-associated redness, that can be a warning sign of cancer and should be evaluated by a medical professional,” Dr. Hieken says.

AI tool reveals what attracts immune cells to tumors and what keeps them away
Researchers developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool that can help explain where immune cells gather in the body and what guides them there The AI tool identifies signals linked to attracting or repelling immune cells and could be used across cancer and other diseases
A key finding suggests that mucins, sugar-coated proteins overproduced by many cancers, may form a physical barrier that keeps T cells away from tumors
The tool offers researchers a new way to understand how cells navigate tissues and identify potential targets across a range of diseases
October 13, 2026 – Researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and collaborating institutions in Texas developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model that helps explain how immune cells find their way to specific locations in the body and why they avoid others. The findings could help scientists better understand cancer, autoimmune diseases and treatment response. READ MORE |

An Evening of Hope Celebrating 25 Years of Compassion and Saving Lives
For 25 years, A Safe Haven for Newborns has stood as a beacon of hope for mothers in crisis and a lifeline for vulnerable newborns. What began as Nick’s deeply personal journey to heal a broken heart and honor the memory of his beloved wife, Gloria, following her tragic passing, has grown into an internationally recognized organization dedicated to preventing infant abandonment and providing support, counseling, and critical resources to women facing the overwhelming reality of an unplanned pregnancy. From its beginnings, the mission has been rooted in compassion, dignity, and love — offering hope, protection, and a path forward during life’s most difficult moments.
Over the past quarter century, countless lives have been touched through the organization’s unwavering commitment to offering safe, legal, and anonymous options for mothers seeking help. Through advocacy, education, community partnerships, and around-the-clock support, A Safe Haven for Newborns has continued to remind women that they are never alone. To date, 441 newborns have been given a chance at life — 431 in Florida; nine in other states, and one in Honduras.
This milestone anniversary is more than a celebration of years — it is a celebration of lives, second chances, and the power of compassion to change the future. We invite you to join us in celebrating our Silver Jubilee by visiting our website and selecting a sponsorship opportunity. Or, contact Nick Silverio at safehaven@asafehavenfornewborns.com; 305-882-1304 x103 for more information.
