August 1, 2024 – Philanthropist and financier Donald Sussman, the founder and chief investment officer of Paloma Partners, has made a $1 million donation to Holy Cross Health to modernize the building that will become the new Holy Cross Family Health Center.
“Access to high-quality and equitable healthcare is essential. The services provided at Holy Cross Health contribute significantly to the overall well-being of the community, and I am heartened by the vision of hospital leadership and its exceptional team of medical professionals in expanding access, increasing innovation, and improving lives of all they serve,” said Sussman, who has a residence in Fort Lauderdale.
To recognize the donation, the drop-off and pick-up area at the Holy Cross Health Emergency Department has been named the S. Donald Sussman Emergency Drive Thru Entrance. The new Emergency Department signage was unveiled in a special ceremony culminating with a dedication and blessing by Holy Cross Health Mission Leader Mary Carter Waren.
“We are at the forefront of transformation,” said Holy Cross Health President and CEO Mark Doyle. “That is because of visionaries like Donald who generously support our mission and our community.”
With Sussman’s $1 million gift, the Holy Cross Family Health Center will be modernized with cutting-edge technology and equipment and will be a beacon of hope for the area’s underserved community, providing accessible outpatient healthcare services to meet the diverse needs of adults and children. The Family Health Center will offer primary care, annual wellness check-ups, immunizations, cancer prevention screenings, social services, pediatric therapy, community education and support, infectious disease management, laboratory services, culinary medicine classes, and therapeutic counseling, among other vital services.

Cleveland Clinic-led Research Identifies Priority Zones That May Help Improve Colorectal Cancer Screening Among Hispanic/Latino Individuals
July 31 ,2024 – Cleveland Clinic-led research has identified geographic areas in the United States where strategic efforts to promote colorectal cancer screening could help reduce healthcare gaps affecting Hispanic/Latino communities.
The study, published in the American Journal of Public Health, marks a first step toward conducting larger neighborhood-level studies addressing disparities in colorectal cancer screening.
The Hispanic/Latino population has the lowest colorectal cancer screening rate among U.S. racial and ethnic groups as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau. Lower screening rates often lead to later diagnoses, advanced cancer stages and poorer treatment outcomes.
The researchers identified “hot spots” across the country where larger percentages of Hispanic/Latino populations are associated with lower colorectal cancer screening rates. Based on this information, they developed an interactive web map illustrating their findings. This is the first study to conduct a nationwide geographic analysis to identify local priority zones with the goal to increase colorectal cancer screening in those Hispanic/Latino communities.

About 6 million U.S. adults are living with heart failure (HF), a number that is expected to increase to more than eight million by 2030.[1] Despite the name, HF doesn’t mean that the heart has stopped working – it means the heart is having a hard time pumping blood and oxygen throughout the body. While there’s no cure for HF, patients can live a quality life by working with their health care team to create and stick with a plan that may include medication, symptom monitoring and lifestyle changes.

AI boosts the power of EEGs, enabling neurologists to quickly, precisely pinpoint signs of dementia
July 31 2024 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic scientists are using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to analyze electroencephalogram (EEG) tests more quickly and precisely, enabling neurologists to find early signs of dementia among data that typically go unexamined.
The century-old EEG, during which a dozen or more electrodes are stuck to the scalp to monitor brain activity, is often used to detect epilepsy. Its results are interpreted by neurologists and other experts trained to spot patterns among the test’s squiggly waves.
In new research published in Brain Communications, scientists at the Mayo Clinic Neurology AI Program (NAIP) demonstrate how AI can not only speed up analysis, but also alert experts reviewing the test results to abnormal patterns too subtle for humans to detect. The technology shows the potential to one day help doctors distinguish among causes of cognitive problems, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

July 31, 2024 — Lee Health is committed to ensuring a healthy community for all, especially new and expecting mothers. In August, to support World Breastfeeding Week, which begins on August 1, the health system is offering free classes throughout the month to encourage and support every mother.
Classes are from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 6, Aug. 13, Aug. 17, Aug. 20 and Aug. 27 at HealthPark Medical Center, 9981 S. HealthPark Dr. in Fort Myers. Attendees will gain valuable support and advice from experienced lactation consultants, connect with fellow mothers, and gain peer-to-peer support via lactation consultant assistance.
Education on lactation services is offered to expecting mothers at 32 weeks gestation during their prenatal appointments. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of an infant’s life with continued breastfeeding for two years or more. While most families initiate breastfeeding, two-thirds of families who initiate breastfeeding don’t achieve the recommended breastfeeding duration or intensity. Lack of access to breastfeeding support is one of the primary barriers to achieving these recommendations.
