DOH-MIAMI-DADE PROMOTES WATER SAFETY MONTH
May 12, 2023 – The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (DOH-Miami-Dade) encourages communities to participate in National Water Safety Month in May. Take precautions to prevent drownings.
With pools, lakes, and other surrounding bodies of water in Florida, water safety is critical to prevent drownings. Children ages 1-4 years are more likely to drown in a home swimming pool than children ages 5-19 years, who are more likely to drown in natural bodies of water. Whether you are a parent or a community group member, everyone plays a role in drowning prevention. The goal is to keep water activities fun and safe for all as we move into the summer months.
Tips on Water Safety:
-Always keep your eyes on children in and around water, including pools and open bodies of water. -Actively supervising and giving children your undivided attention when they are in or around water can help prevent drownings. -Never leave a child alone around water. If your child is missing, check other pools or surrounding bodies of water.
-Use barriers around water, including fences, self-closing/self-latching gates, and secure doors with alarms. Barriers help prevent young children from wandering into bodies of water, including lakes, pools, ponds, and more. -Have a phone nearby in case you need to call 911 in an emergency.

AMA APPLAUDS FDA COMMITTEE ON RECOMMENDING OVER-THE-COUNTER BIRTH CONTROL
MAY 10, 2023 - “The AMA strongly supports removing the prescription access barrier to contraception by making oral contraceptives available over-the-counter. Given that access is one of the most cited reasons why patients do not use oral contraceptives, use them inconsistently, or discontinue use altogether, we are pleased that the Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee and the Obstetrics, Reproductive, and Urologic Drugs Advisory Committee voted unanimously today in support of allowing a progestin-only birth control pill to be available without a prescription.

AMA STATEMENT ON FDA REMOVING RESTRICTIONS FOR MSM BLOOD DONATION
“As a long-time advocate for using rational, scientifically based blood and tissue donation deferral periods based on a donor’s individual risk, the AMA welcomes the FDA’s new guidance that removes outdated categorical restrictions on blood donations from men who have sex with men (MSM). We applaud the FDA for applying the latest scientific evidence to ensure that blood donation criteria are applied more equitably across all segments of our population, including the LGBTQ+ community.
“While this is a huge step in the right direction, we urge the FDA to expand their work by reevaluating its donation deferral policies for corneas, human cells and other cellular and tissue-based products based on the latest scientific evidence—ensuring they are also fairly and consistently applied to donors according to their individual risk.

NIH LAUNCHES $140 MILLION EFFORT TO INVESTIGATE GENETIC VARIATION IN NORMAL HUMAN CELLS AND TISSUES
Common Fund Program will accelerate research on human development, aging, and disease.
May 11,c2023 – The National Institutes of Health is launching a new program, the Common Fund’s Somatic Mosaicism Across Human Tissues (SMaHT) Network, that aims to transform our knowledge of how much genetic variation there is in the cells and tissues throughout our bodies. Somatic mosaicism is a type of genetic variation that arises when our somatic (non-reproductive) cells are genetically different from each other. This somatic genetic variation occurs when some of our cells accumulate DNA changes over time. Somatic mosaicism can alter how cells function and may influence human development, disease, aging, and other physiological measures across the lifespan. The SMaHT Network, with awards totaling $140 million dollars over five years, pending availability of funds, seeks to discover and catalog the breadth of somatic mosaicism in human tissues.
