| ACHE of South Florida Member Spotlight: Ashley Abbondandolo
Ashley Abbondandolo is senior director of strategic growth and development for Memorial Healthcare System, but it’s not a position she was seeking when she started her career. Instead, her progression wound through several other paths until she arrived at this point nearly five years ago. “I started in the healthcare system in 2020 as the administrative fellow, and rotated to all six of our facilities. During that year I gained a lot of experiences that as a young leader I otherwise may not have had. So I started as an administrative fellow, and shortly after, I became a project manager in our corporate finance department, which was definitely somewhere I never thought I’d end up.”
For that reason, Abbondandolo states, “I always tell students when I talk with them, you never know what your path is going to be, just always be open to all sorts of opportunities that may arise. That’s how I ended up in this path of business development and physician relations.”
In describing her responsibilities, Abbondandolo said she leads the new centralized physician relations and business development structure for the Memorial Healthcare System, with her main role being to work with physicians affiliated with Memorial as well as those in the community. “Our team provides a way for physicians to make sure they have all of the resources in their toolkits to know what Memorial’s services are, and how we can work together to better care for their patients and the community.”

Holy Cross Health’s Partners in Breast Health Saves Lives of Patients Who Cannot Afford Care
Two grateful patients share their survival stories.
November 1, 2024 – Since 2011, the Holy Cross Health Partners in Breast Health (PIBH) program has provided outreach education, clinical breast exams, screening mammograms and diagnostic procedures for uninsured, lower income and minority women over the age of 40 in Broward County who lack access to healthcare services and who are living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.
The goal of PIBH is to reduce late-stage breast cancer diagnosis and decrease death in minority populations. According to the American Cancer Society, Black women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have a 38% higher mortality rate than white women mostly due to later diagnosis and less access to high-quality healthcare. In fact, Black women have the lowest survival rate for every known stage of breast cancer.
Two patients who credit PIBH for enabling them to receive lifesaving diagnosis and treatment are Romelia Catarino of Fort Lauderdale and northwest Broward County resident Beatriz Rodriguez.

Research Shows Cleveland Clinic’s Therapeutic Virtual Yoga Program Can Be Effective for Chronic Low Back Pain
Participants also reported better sleep quality and reduced use of pain medications
NOVEMBER 1, 2024 – Cleveland Clinic researchers found that a 12-week therapeutic virtual yoga program for chronic low back pain can be a feasible, safe and effective treatment option. The findings are published in JAMA Network Open.
Chronic low back pain is very common — up to 20% of adults worldwide have long-lasting or recurrent lower back pain. In severe cases, the pain can make it difficult to walk, sleep, work or do daily activities.
Clinical guidelines recommend the use of non-pharmacologic treatments first, such as physical therapy or in-person yoga classes. With this study, researchers examined whether virtual yoga classes would also be effective for the treatment of chronic low back pain. The findings show that participants who practiced virtual yoga classes reported reduced back pain intensity and improved back-related function.

Miami, FL – October 15, 2024 – Pedro Martinez-Clark, MD, FACC, a renowned Harvard-trained cardiologist and founder of Amavita Heart and Vascular™, has joined forces with LimFlow® to offer an innovative solution for patients suffering from chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). This partnership with Dr. Pedro Martinez-Clark follows the recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of the LimFlow® System, a minimally invasive treatment designed to save limbs and improve the quality of life for patients who have exhausted all other revascularization options and are at risk of major amputation.
The most severe form of peripheral artery disease (PAD) is CLTI, affecting millions of Americans, causing reduced blood flow to the extremities, leading to chronic pain, festering wounds, and, often, amputations. LimFlow® is a groundbreaking transcatheter arterialization of deep veins (TADV) system that offers new hope for patients by reestablishing blood flow in deep veins, helping to heal wounds, reducing pain, and, most importantly, preventing limb loss. Research shows new method helps doctors safely remove dangerous heart infections without surgery
OCTOBER 30, 2024 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — Doctors at Mayo Clinic used a new catheter-based approach to draw out resistant pockets of infection that settle in the heart, known as right-sided infective endocarditis, without surgery. Unless treated quickly, the walled-off infections can grow, severely damaging heart valves and potentially affecting other organs as well. In a recent study, over 90% of the participants had their infection cleared, and they had lower in-hospital mortality compared to those whose infections remained.
The research is part of a Mayo Clinic-led study across 19 U.S. sites involving patients who were not good candidates for surgery and whose right-sided heart infections had not responded to antibiotics. Abdallah El Sabbagh, M.D., an interventional cardiologist at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, was the study’s principal investigator. Dr. El Sabbagh presented late-breaking research findings at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics Symposium on Oct. 30.

With breast cancer rates rising among younger people, the need for treatments that provide excellent outcomes with fewer side effects is only increasing.
Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center experts highlight breast cancer research that may reduce or eliminate the need for chemotherapy and endocrine treatments and may allow for shorter and less intense radiation therapy courses.

HHS Introduces New Requirements for Maternal Safety Standards, Eliminates Barriers to Care for Underserved Communities
NOVEMBER 1, 2024 – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), today announced new baseline health and safety requirements for hospitals and Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) providing obstetrical (OB) services to make pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care safer. CMS is also removing barriers to expand access to care for those formerly incarcerated and others in underserved communities. These policies are included in the calendar year (CY) 2025 Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) and Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) final rule released today, which also updates payment rates for hospital outpatient and ASC services for CY 2025 by 2.9% (3.4% market basket, less 0.5 percentage points for multifactor productivity). Today, we are establishing the first-ever maternal health and safety standards for hospitals,” said CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure. “Additionally, the CY 2025 hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System final rule expands access to behavioral health services, increases access to certain high-cost drugs for those facing cancer in tribal communities, and addresses barriers to Medicare coverage for those formerly incarcerated.”

NIH-funded scientists uncover clues to precancer and tumor biology
A collection of new papers highlight discoveries from the Human Tumor Atlas Network, a Cancer Moonshot℠ initiative.
October 30, 2024 – New insights from multiple studies provide critical information on how cancer tumors develop, spread, and respond to treatments. The 10 studies from the Human Tumor Atlas Network (HTAN), a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Cancer Moonshot℠ initiative to construct three-dimensional maps of human tumors, will be published Oct. 31, 2024, across several Nature journals.
Several studies explore the role of the tumor microenvironment and the immune system in promoting the spread of cancer and its resistance to treatment. Three studies map the trajectory of precancerous colorectal tissues toward cancer by measuring the contributions of multiple molecular and cellular events. Multiple new HTAN papers describe the development of innovative single-cell technology and analysis platforms. An accompanying research briefing by W. Kimryn Rathmell, M.D., Ph.D., director of NIH’s National Cancer Institute (NCI), and Dinah Singer, Ph.D., NCI deputy director for scientific strategy and development, discusses the history, progress, and future of HTAN.

NIH study demonstrates long-term benefits of weight-loss surgery in young people
October 31, 2025 – Young people with severe obesity who underwent weight-loss surgery at age 19 or younger continued to see sustained weight loss and resolution of common obesity-related comorbidities 10 years later, according to results from a large clinical study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Study participants with an average age of 17 underwent gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy weight-loss surgery. After 10 years, participants sustained an average of 20% reduction in body mass index (BMI), 55% reduction of type 2 diabetes, 57% reduction of hypertension, and 54% reduction of abnormal cholesterol. Both gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy had similar results.
The 55% reduction in type 2 diabetes was much higher than the rates observed in adults after weight-loss surgery (18% at seven years and 12.7% at 12 years) in a recently published NIH-funded study.
Type 2 diabetes tends to progress more rapidly when it occurs in young people, and these findings demonstrate the greater health benefits and durability of bariatric surgery in youth than would be expected in similarly treated adults.

NIH trial of rectal microbicide for HIV prevention begins in the United States
Study will assess safety and acceptability of rectal douche for pre-exposure prophylaxis.
October 31, 2024 – A clinical trial sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched to examine the safety and acceptability of a novel rectal HIV microbicide douche containing the antiretroviral drug tenofovir. This “on-demand” HIV prevention approach involves using the microbicide prior to a potential exposure from receptive anal intercourse.
Several forms of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are in use in the United States and globally, namely daily oral pills, long-acting injections, and a monthly vaginal ring. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men who meet certain criteria can take “on-demand” oral PrEP(link is external) around the time of sex to prevent HIV acquisition, but there is insufficient evidence to support its use in other populations. Rectal microbicides are another HIV prevention method being explored for use in an “on-demand” manner to expand the choices available to eligible people who engage in receptive anal intercourse and who stand to benefit from using PrEP.
