Zayia’s wish: To deliver comfort items to children undergoing cancer treatment at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital
September 12, 2023 – When Zayia was 14 years old, she began experiencing headaches, pain in her joints, and eye problems. After 6 months of seeing doctors for these symptoms, she came to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital where she was diagnosed with pre-B acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). While Zayia has battled this disease twice, her care team says she has always remained positive, handling the challenges like a true champ.
Zayia’s illness qualified her to receive a wish from Make-A-Wish Southern Florida, and her wish was to give. She’ll did that by delivering comfort items that included blankets and pillows to children undergoing cancer treatment and their families at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

KINDRED HOSPITAL THE PALM BEACHES OPENS INPATIENT REHABILITATION UNIT
The 11-bed unit, located within the hospital, provides intensive rehabilitation therapy to advance patients’ recovery from injury or illness.
Kindred Hospital The Palm Beaches today held a ribbon cutting to open its new rehabilitation unit located inside the specialty hospital. The acute rehabilitation unit (ARU) helps adults who have experienced a loss of function or disability due to injury or illness.
The 11-bed ARU features all-private rooms for patients recovering from conditions that include stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic injury, neurological conditions, amputation, respiratory and pulmonary illness, and trauma. The new unit provides the intensive, interdisciplinary clinical and rehabilitation services necessary for improved function and independence, facilitating patients’ recovery so they can be discharged and return to their homes.
“First and foremost, this ARU adds essential inpatient rehabilitation services to an area with significant need,” said Jerry Creighton, COO and CCO of Kindred Hospital The Palm Beaches. “This complementary service helps our patients and those referred to our ARU recover and, ideally, return home with the strength and ability to live more independently. It gives our hospital the ability to provide a broader range of acute-level, physician-led rehabilitation care while avoiding the disruption of transferring a patient to a separate facility. Patients who proceed through this continuum of care are more likely to recover sooner. We believe we can deliver better outcomes with these enhanced capabilities, expertise, and clinical integration, all under one roof.”
The ARU features large interdisciplinary gyms, designated rooms for dining and activities, outdoor areas that allow patients to practice ambulating or meet with family and friends, and specialty programs dedicated to neuro, stroke, brain injury, and amputation.

DELRAY MEDICAL CENTER FIRST HOSPITAL IN FLORIDA TO USE POLARX™ CRYOABLATION SYSTEM
September 12 2023-Delray Medical Center is the first hospital in Florida to use the POLARx™ Cryoablation System, treating a patient diagnosed with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF), an intermittent form of AF that causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate.
“Using this system reinforces Delray Medical Center’s commitment to patient care by investing in the latest technology,” Delray Medical Center CEO Daniel Listi said. “This is one more arrow in our quiver to treat complex cardiac conditions and we expect future technologies to build on this advancement.”
The procedure was performed on September 11, 2023, by Luis Mora, MD, in collaboration with Yoel Vivas, MD, electrophysiologists on staff at Delray.
The system is purpose-built to address known challenges with traditional cryoablation platforms, and features the POLARx FIT Cryoablation Balloon Catheter, a unique device that enables two balloon sizes – 28 and 31mm – in one catheter. This capability promotes procedural efficiency, allows physicians to address a wider range of pulmonary vein anatomies, and helps achieve more complete tissue contact to better deliver treatment to areas of the heart where disruptive signals that cause AF originate.

AMA: MEDICARE PHYSICIAN PAYMENTS NEED OVERHAUL STAT
SEPTEMBER 11, 2023 — In a comment letter to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) concerning the Medicare physician payment schedule, the American Medical Association (AMA) said today the proposed cuts are bad policy, bad timing and bad for patients. Physicians are facing a triple whammy as pay reductions are pending on several fronts. This unsustainable approach is threatening access to care.
The AMA again questions the wisdom of the conversion factor reductions, specifically the proposed 3.36 percent reduction in 2024. The proposed reduction is attributable to two factors, including a 1.25 percent reduction stemming from a temporary legislative update and a negative budget neutrality adjustment linked to the introduction of a CMS-developed office visit add-on code.
“With higher costs for everything associated with practicing medicine, another year of Medicare payment cuts jeopardizes patient access and imperils the physician practices on which so many seniors rely,” said AMA President Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, M.D., MPH. “These cuts are unsustainable and unconscionable.”

AMA STATEMENT ON UPDATED COVID-19 VACCINE
September 12, 2023 – “Becoming sick from respiratory viruses such as flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19 is common, especially during the fall and winter. With COVID-19 hospital admissions increasing, we welcome today’s recommendations by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) supporting a universal recommendation for the 2023-2024 COVID-19, XBB.1.5 containing vaccine.
“ACIP’s recommendations, following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval on Monday for those 12 and older and authorization for those 6 months to 11 years of age, will allow individuals 6 months of age and older to receive an updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine dose of a Pfizer or Moderna mRNA vaccine. This recommendation replaces previous bivalent booster dose recommendations.

HEALTH CARE DISTRICT OF PALM BEACH COUNTY ANNOUNCES DELIVERY OF ITS NEW TRAUMA HAWK HELICOPTER
September 12, 2023 – The Health Care District announces the delivery last week of the first of two Leonardo AW169 helicopters. The AW169 helicopters were selected for Trauma Hawk following more than a decade of planning and due diligence. It’s anticipated the second helicopter will also be delivered this month.
“This marks a new era in the Health Care District’s commitment to delivering safe, high-quality trauma services to our community,” stated Darcy J. Davis, CEO of the Health Care District. “These state-of-the-art helicopters will provide swift and efficient air transportation to enhance patient access to critical medical services and improved healthcare outcomes.”
The Leonardo AW169 helicopters will replace the current Sikorsky S76-C+ aircraft, which have served the Health Care District and Palm Beach County since 1999. The new aircraft will remain out of service during a transition period while the flight team and mechanics complete specialized training to ensure a seamless shift to the new helicopters early next year. The Sikorsky aircraft will remain in service throughout the transition.
“The Health Care District’s aeromedical program has been a key component of Palm Beach County’s integrated trauma system for more than 30 years,” said Kenneth A. Scheppke, MD, FAEMS, Medical Director of the Health Care District’s aeromedical and ground transportation programs, as well as the Medical Director for Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. “These new, technologically-advanced aircraft will play a key role in EMS response by providing critically ill and injured patients access to safe and rapid air transport in a county with a land area larger than the state of Rhode Island.”
One of the new standout features of the AW169 is its longitudinal roll-on stretcher system. This technology minimizes patient movement during loading and unloading, providing a safe and efficient means of transport directly to a specialized medical center like one of the county’s two Level 1 trauma centers. As a result, the Trauma Hawk medical team will no longer need to transfer patients onto hospital stretchers at the helipad, saving crucial minutes during lifesaving missions. READ MORE

The FDA clearance of the Ti-Largo 3D Printed Cervical Cage underscores FloSpine’s commitment to adhering to the highest regulatory standards and its dedication to delivering innovative solutions to patients and healthcare providers.
Inaugurating this momentous occasion, Dr. John Afshar, a renowned spinal surgeon at Palm Beach Neuroscience Institute successfully implanted the Ti-Largo 3D Printed Cervical Cage in the first patients earlier this month. HIGH LEVELS OF PARTICULATE AIR POLLUTION ASSOCIATED WITH INCREASED BREAST CANCER INCIDENCE
NIH researchers combined historical air quality data with breast cancer data from large U.S. study.
September 11, 2023 – Researchers at the National Institutes of Health found that living in an area with high levels of particulate air pollution was associated with an increased incidence of breast cancer. The study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, is one of the largest studies to date looking at the relationship between outdoor air pollution, specifically fine particulate matter, and breast cancer incidence. The research was done by scientists at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), both part of NIH.
The researchers saw that the largest increases in breast cancer incidence was among women who on average had higher particulate matter levels (PM2.5) near their home prior to enrolling in the study, compared to those who lived in areas with lower levels of PM2.5. Particulate matter is a mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets found in the air. It comes from numerous sources, such as motor vehicle exhaust, combustion processes (e.g., oil, coal), wood smoke/vegetation burning, and industrial emissions. The particulate matter pollution measured in this study was 2.5 microns in diameter or smaller (PM2.5), meaning the particles are small enough to be inhaled deep into the lungs. The Environmental Protection Agency has a website known as Air Now(link is external) where residents can enter their zip code and get the air quality information, including PM2.5 levels, for their area.
“We observed an 8% increase in breast cancer incidence for living in areas with higher PM2.5 exposure. Although this is a relatively modest increase, these findings are significant given that air pollution is a ubiquitous exposure that impacts almost everyone,” said Alexandra White, Ph.D., lead author and head of the Environment and Cancer Epidemiology Group at NIEHS. “These findings add to a growing body of literature suggesting that air pollution is related to breast cancer.”

NIH AWARDS $50.3 MILLION FOR “MULTI-OMICS” RESEARCH ON HUMAN HEALTH AND DISEASE
New research consortium will develop innovative strategies for clinical studies involving ancestrally diverse populations.
September 12, 2023 – The National Institutes of Health is establishing the Multi-Omics for Health and Disease Consortium, with approximately $11 million awarded in the consortium’s first year of funding. The new consortium aims to advance the generation and analysis of “multi-omic” data for human health research.
Multi-omics refers to a research approach that incorporates several “omics” data types derived from different research areas — such as genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics. Each of these data types reveals distinct information about different aspects of a biological system, and leveraging all these data types at once is becoming increasingly possible with advances in high-throughput technologies and data science.
