NICU FAMILY GIVES BACK TO HOSPITAL THAT SAVED THEIR CHILD’S LIFE
January 8, 2024 – Walker Maymon’s journey began right at the start of the pandemic in April 2020.
On a spring morning, Marla Maymon, already a mother of two, welcomed her third baby into the world. However, the joyous occasion quickly turned into worry because throughout the day Walker refused to eat and had a lot of reflux.
Broward Health Medical Center’s multidisciplinary team took an x-ray of Walker’s abdomen. As the day progressed, the situation worsened, prompting the parents to consult their pediatrician and jointly decide to transfer Walker to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) under the care of NICU Medical Director and Pediatrix neonatologist Johny Tryzmel, M.D.
“I was very nervous and anxious, but it was an absolute blessing that we were at Broward Health Medical Center and a Level III NICU was just steps away,” Marla said.
For eight days, the Maymon family experienced a roller coaster of emotions as they navigated through the unknowns of Walker’s condition.
“Dr. Tryzmel told us that he was going to take care of my son like he was his,” said Walker’s father, David Maymon. “From that point on I put my faith entirely in his hands and what he did was miraculous.”

SYLVESTER-LED RESEARCH GROUP UNVEILS THE FIRST INDIVIDUAL RISK PREDICTION MODEL FOR MULTIPLE MYELOMA
New machine learning method could improve predictions for treatment response, prognosis
MIAMI, FLORIDA – JANUARY 9, 2024 – A multicenter collaboration led by researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has produced the first computational model for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma that predicts an individual’s personalized prognosis based on their tumor genomics and treatments.
The prediction model for individualized risk in newly diagnosed multiple myeloma, or IRMMa, improves on previous prognostic tools because it takes into account the biology of patients’ tumors, said Dr. C. Ola Landgren, chief of the Division of Myeloma and director of the Sylvester Myeloma Institute, senior author of an article unveiling the new tool in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. This is important in many cancers, but especially in multiple myeloma, which is highly variable. In fact, the researchers identified 12 distinct subtypes of the disease, a classification that had not been made before.
“The future of the field will have to be focused on precision medicine,” Landgren said. “There’s no other way forward.”
The original method for classifying multiple myeloma, developed in the 1970s, was based on staging for solid tumors. It relied on the amount of cancer present, and with the treatments available at the time, it was fairly accurate, Landgren said. But with newly developed therapies, especially immunotherapies, the amount of cancer is often less important than the nature of the cancerous cells. Different kinds of driver mutations in the tumor genome affect the cancer’s growth, so certain subtypes of myeloma could have a very good outcome even if they’re diagnosed when the cancer is widespread, assuming the right treatment is matched to the patient.

RESIDENTIAL ADDICTION TREATMENT FOR ADOLESCENTS IS SCARCE AND EXPENSIVE
January 8, 2024 – NIH-supported analysis finds just seven states had a facility that accepted Medicaid, had a bed open the same day, and offered buprenorphine.
Access to residential addiction treatment centers caring for U.S. adolescents under 18 years old in the United States is limited and costly, according to a new study(link is external) supported by the National Institutes of Health. Researchers found that only about half (54%) of the residential addiction treatment facilities that they contacted had a bed immediately available, and for those that had a waitlist, the average estimated time before a bed opened was 28 days. In addition, the average daily cost per day of treatment was $878, with close to half (48%) of the facilities that provided information requiring partial or full payment upfront. On average, the quoted cost of a month’s stay at a residential addiction treatment facility was over $26,000.
Published in Health Affairs, this study was supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), both part of NIH, and led by researchers at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). The results build on previous research revealing that only one in four residential treatment centers caring for U.S. adolescents under 18 years old provide buprenorphine, a medication to treat opioid use disorder.
“The ability to access timely, evidence-based treatment for addiction can be a matter of life or death, and the current system too often fails young people,” said Nora Volkow, M.D., director of NIDA. “We need to make access to timely, affordable, and evidence-based care the norm across treatment settings.”
In 2022, an estimated 2.2 million people between the ages of 12 and 17 had a substance use disorder in the past year, with 265,000 having an opioid use disorder, according to the latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health(link is external), which is produced by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). In addition, previous data have reported a dramatic rise in overdose deaths among teens between 2010 and 2021(link is external), which remained elevated well into 2022. This increase is largely attributed to illicit fentanyl, a potent synthetic drug, contaminating the supply of counterfeit pills made to resemble prescription medications.

A COMMON MARKER OF NEUROLOGICAL DISEASES MAY PLAY ROLE IN HEALTHY BRAINS

NIH-funded research could change how we think about the causes of disorders like Parkinson’s.
Researchers have discovered that a protein called phosphorylated α-synuclein, which is associated with several neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia, is also involved in the normal processes of how neurons communicate with each other in a healthy brain. The research, published in Neuron, was funded in part by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), a part of the National Institutes of Health.
Phosphorylation is a process where a phosphate ion is added to a specific amino acid, or building block, of a protein, in this case the protein α-synuclein. This addition can change the shape of that protein, causing it to change its level of activity. Most studies of phosphorylated α-synuclein have studied its role in certain neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia, where it builds up in protein clumps called Lewy bodies. These clumps are thought to be toxic to neurons, and one of the prevailing hypotheses is that the phosphorylation of the protein α-synuclein triggers these diseases.
“In most studies to date, the mere presence of α-synuclein phosphorylation is assumed to be a marker for pathology for certain disorders, like Parkinson’s and Lewy Body dementias,” said Beth-Anne Sieber, Ph.D., program director, NINDS. “Recently, there has been considerable interest in developing drugs that prevent α-synuclein phosphorylation as a way of treating these disorders. These findings challenge the current hypotheses about how these disorders may originate in the brain and may give insight into how we might better treat them.”
