Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center First Hospital in Northern Palm Beach County to Offer TriClip™ System
New Innovative Treatment Option for People With Tricuspid Regurgitation
PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL- December 20, 2024 –Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center is the first hospital between Orlando and northern Palm Beach County to perform an Abbott TriClip™ transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER). This is a minimally invasive therapy that treats patients with a leaky tricuspid valve, a condition known as tricuspid regurgitation (TR), without the need for open-heart surgery. TriClip is a first-of-its-kind therapy that repairs the tricuspid valve in patients and is backed by data demonstrating safety, effectiveness and quality-of-life benefits. The procedure was completed by structural cardiologist, Dr. Augusto Villa.
TriClip is delivered to the heart via a catheter inserted through the femoral vein in the leg and works by clipping together a portion of the leaflets of the tricuspid valve to reduce the backflow of blood. Designed specifically for the right side of the heart and the tricuspid valve’s complex anatomy, the innovative TriClip and steerable guiding catheter systems allow physicians to independently grasp and effectively clip leaflets of the tricuspid valve to reduce the regurgitation. This minimally invasive approach allows the heart to pump blood more efficiently and relieve symptoms of TR, which improves the quality of life for patients.
“From being the first hospital in the county to perform open heart surgery, to utilizing some of the latest medical technology, this continues our tradition of specializing in heart treatment,” said Palm Beach Gardens Medial Center CEO, Erik Cazares. “We put patients first, that’s why we are investing in devices like the TriClip, to make sure every patient can have the best opportunity at a positive outcome, so they can get back to doing what they love.”

Study Uses High-Tech Golf Simulator to Determine How Joint Replacement Surgery Affects Players’ Game
December 19, 2024 – A novel study at HSS Florida, the West Palm Beach location of Hospital for Special Surgery, is utilizing a high-tech golf simulator to evaluate players with arthritis both before and after joint replacement surgery.
The study is recruiting patients with knee, hip or shoulder arthritis to determine how the disease affects club swing and other components of the golf game. Participants will be assessed again following joint replacement and subsequent rehabilitation to determine the effect of surgery on their ability to play golf.
“High-end golf simulators have optically enhanced radar tracking technology that provides a considerable amount of data in terms of golf swing, ball launch and ball flight,” explains Ryan W. Simovitch, MD, director of the shoulder division and co-medical director at HSS Florida, and the study’s principal investigator. “Our simulator employs advanced technology and complex algorithms to deliver a realistic and immersive virtual golf experience.”
The researchers will use the simulator in combination with a highly sophisticated system for motion analysis known as DARI that uses high-speed cameras to capture the golfer’s movements from multiple angles. “We will perform motion analysis of the torso, shoulder, elbow, hip and knee while simultaneously looking at vital information provided by the golf simulator such as ball spin, distance, trajectory and smash factor,” Dr. Simovitch explains.

HHS Launches Let’s Get Real Campaign to Highlight Facts About Childhood Vaccines and Share Stories from Confident Parents Who Vaccinate Their Kids
The campaign shares balanced information about vaccines and encourages parents to share why they trust vaccines to protect their children.
December 20, 2024 – Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) launched the Let’s Get Real campaign to cut through the noise of misinformation and give parents the balanced information they need about childhood vaccines. The campaign provides verifiable facts so parents can get the information they want to make informed vaccine decisions, and it shares stories from doctors and peers on why most of us rely on vaccines to protect our children. Let’s Get Real also offers tools for health care professionals with pediatric patients.
Vaccines help protect children from diseases, like polio and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), which used to kill or disable many people. Hib is spread through droplets in the air, through coughs or sneezes, and can cause serious infections in different parts of the body, like the brains and lungs. Hib disease used to be more common in the U.S., but cases have dropped by more than 99% since 1987. Vaccines also help to prevent or lessen the severity of diseases such as whooping cough, which is especially deadly for newborns, and human papillomavirus which millions of Americans, including teens, get every year and can lead to cancer.
