Looking Forward to the Future after ACL Replacement Surgery

May 28, 2025 – Based in Fort Lauderdale, Giovanni Narseal Batiste has a passion for fitness. After losing nearly 70 pounds, his personal journey inspired him to become a fitness trainer and use the knowledge he gained to help others transform their bodies and improve their health.

He was in the best shape of his life when a bike ride with his beloved 100-pound German Rottweiler, Maya, took a terrible turn. Batiste barely caught a glimpse of the driver that hit him and sped off. In a daze he tried to stand, but his right knee buckled beneath him. He knew the injury was serious.

After being transported to Broward Health Medical Center, Giovanni’s fears were confirmed. He was told he had “blown out” his knee. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), a band of tissue that connects the thigh bone to the shin bone, would need full reconstruction surgery.

CLEVELAND CLINIC : Update on Collection of Copays

MAY 28, 2025 – At Cleveland Clinic, our first responsibility is to care for our patients, their health and the well-being of the communities we serve. To bring our mission to those who are in need, we also care for our organization.

Our process update to collecting insurance copays is not intended to disrupt patient care. Commercially insured or Medicare Advantage patients unable to pay their copay can set up a 0% interest payment plan to ensure continuity of care.

Over the past decade, we have observed the growth in out-of-pocket costs for patients through their insurance plans. Copays are a standard part of most plans — a fixed amount determined by insurers, not by healthcare providers, which is to be paid up front before services are provided. In 2024, more than half of copays were not paid when Cleveland Clinic provided services.

We continue to fulfill our obligations to patients who are covered by Medicaid and traditional Medicare. Separate from those plans, we are required to collect copays. Doing so maintains our ability to provide the highest quality care to every patient who needs our services and invest in the communities we serve.

What’s new

Starting June 1, 2025, Cleveland Clinic will require copays for nonemergency outpatient services at the time of service. If unable to make the copay, patients can set up a 0% interest payment plan.

Nonemergency outpatient services include:

-Scheduled office visits (primary care and specialists).
-Therapy services (physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech, etc.).
-Outpatient diagnostic testing (imaging, scheduled labs, etc.).
-Outpatient procedural visits and in-office procedures.

This new copay collection process does not apply to patients with Medicaid or traditional Medicare, emergency department visits, urgent/express care visits, surgeries, cancer treatments, and inpatient hospital stays. Copays for these services are still expected, but not required, at the time care is provided.

HCA Florida JFK North Hospital Celebrates Mental Health Awareness Month with Puppy Therapy for Staff

May 28, 2025 –In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, HCA Florida JFK North Hospital celebrated the emotional well-being of its staff with a unique and uplifting event.  The hospital hosted a joyful puppy yoga session, offering caregivers a moment of peace, play, and relaxation through therapeutic interaction with adoptable rescue dogs from Big Dog Ranch Rescue.

The event was part of the hospital’s ongoing commitment to supporting the mental and emotional well-being of its healthcare workers.

“Our team shows up every day to care for our community, and it’s equally important that we take care of them,” said Ashley Vertuno, CEO of HCA Florida JFK North Hospital. “Mental health support can take many forms. Sometimes, it’s about creating moments of connection and joy—and that’s exactly what this event delivered.”

Research consistently shows that interacting with pets can significantly reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Petting an animal can lower cortisol (the stress hormone), release mood-boosting hormones like serotonin and oxytocin, and even reduce blood pressure and heart rate.

You are when you eat: UF/IFAS chrononutrition guide reveals the importance of meal timing

May 28, 2025 — Americans have long heard about the health benefits of adhering to diets rich in fresh produce and whole grains and low in red meat and processed sugars. But they may not be aware of how meal timing can affect their health.

A recent publication from the UF/IFAS department of food science and human nutrition describes chrononutrition, an emerging field of study that connects eating with circadian rhythm, the body’s 24-hour internal clock.

How someone schedules meals throughout the day can impact their weight and body mass index (BMI) as well as increase their odds of developing cardiometabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, according to the authors of the publication, an Ask IFAS guide.

“Healthy eating is not only what you eat but also how much you eat and when,” said doctoral candidate Kaylyn Koons, the publication’s lead author.

Franz Halberg, a Romanian-born physician, introduced the idea of chrononutrition in 1967. The concept is based on the premise that the sleep and wake cycle regulates bodily functions, including metabolism and digestion, so the timing, frequency and consistency of food intake affects health.

Empath Health Strengthens Commitment to Home-Based Care with Sale of Mid-Pinellas Service Center

May 28, 2025 — Empath Health today announced the pending sale of its Mid-Pinellas Service Center at 5771 Roosevelt Boulevard — a strategic move that reflects the not-for-profit’s long-standing commitment to meeting patients where they are: at home, in the community, and with dignity.

Empath Health is the parent company of Suncoast Hospice, which has served the Pinellas community since 1977. It all began in a two-bedroom cottage on Cleveland Street, rented for $250 a month. Volunteers stored walkers in the bathtub, jumped over tables to reach patients, and saved every paperclip and rubber band. When the first phone bill came in — $100.43 — it was quietly paid by a neighbor with a handwritten note calling it “a gift of love.”

That legacy of resourcefulness and community partnership continues to guide Empath today. In the early 2000s, the organization created the Empath Health umbrella to support the expansion of services beyond hospice, including home health, PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly), HIV and sexual health services, and grief support. Today, Empath serves more than 80,000 people annually across 20 Florida counties.

New biomarker may guide best use of KRAS inhibitors in lung cancer

Lung cancer patients with high TTF-1 expression had improved survival outcomes following treatment with the KRAS inhibitor, sotorasib

This biomarker may help physicians determine those most likely to benefit from sotorasib and those who may need alternative or combination therapies

TTF-1 is a readily available biomarker commonly used for lung cancer diagnostics

MAY 28, 2025 – Researchers from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center have identified a new biomarker, TTF-1, that was predictive of survival outcomes for patients with advanced KRAS G12C-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), following treatment with the KRAS targeted therapy, sotorasib.

Results from the study, published today in Nature Medicine, found patients with lung tumors that express low TTF-1 levels responded poorly to sotorasib – with a median progression free survival (PFS) of 2.8 months and a median overall survival (OS) of 4.5 months – whereas patients with tumors expressing high TTF-1 levels had a median PFS of 8.1 months and a median OS of 16 months.

CMS Increasing Oversight on States Illegally Using Federal Medicaid Funding for Health Care for Illegal Immigrants

MAY 27, 2025-The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced today increased federal oversight to stop states from misusing federal Medicaid dollars to cover health care for individuals who are in the country illegally. Under federal law, federal Medicaid funding is generally only available for emergency medical services for noncitizens with unsatisfactory immigration status who would otherwise be Medicaid-eligible, but some states have pushed the boundaries, putting taxpayers on the hook for benefits that are not allowed.

“Medicaid is not, and cannot be, a backdoor pathway to subsidize open borders,” said CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. “States have a duty to uphold the law and protect taxpayer funds. We are putting them on notice—CMS will not allow federal dollars to be diverted to cover those who are not lawfully eligible.”

As part of the action, CMS is ramping up financial oversight across the board to identify and stop improper spending. This includes:

Focused evaluations of select state Medicaid spending reports (CMS-64 form submissions);
In-depth reviews of select states’ financial management systems; and
Assessing existing eligibility rules and policies to close loopholes and strengthen enforcement.
“Medicaid funds must serve American citizens in need and those legally entitled to benefits,” said CMS Deputy Administrator and Director of the Center for Medicaid & CHIP Services Drew Snyder. “If states cannot or will not comply, CMS will step in.”

HHS Office for Civil Rights Settles HIPAA Security Rule Investigation with a Florida Health Care Provider

Settlement Resolves Investigation into Potential Security Rule Failures Exploited by Malicious Insider

MAY 28, 2025- Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced a settlement with BayCare Health System (BayCare), a Florida health care provider, concerning several potential violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Security Rule. The settlement resolves an OCR investigation based on a complaint received concerning impermissible access to the complainant’s electronic protected health information (ePHI).

OCR enforces the HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules, which set forth the requirements that covered entities (health plans, health care clearinghouses, and most health care providers) and business associates must follow to protect the privacy and security of protected health information (PHI). The HIPAA Security Rule establishes national standards to protect and secure our health care system by requiring administrative, physical, and technical safeguards to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of ePHI.

Joint Statement with Argentina Health Minister

May 27, 2025 – U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Argentine Minister of Health Mario Lugones today issued the following joint statement regarding each country’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO):

“The WHO’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic revealed serious structural and operational shortcomings that undermined global trust and highlighted the urgent need for independent, science-based leadership in global health.

“There are well-documented concerns regarding the early management of the pandemic and the risks associated with certain types of research. Rather than ensuring timely transparency, the WHO failed to provide critical access to information, impairing countries’ ability to act swiftly and effectively, with devastating global consequences.

“The absence of meaningful reforms, disproportionate financial demands, and the increasing politicization of the organization have ultimately led the United States and Argentina to withdraw from the WHO.

Learn CPR this summer – you just might save a life

American Heart Association offers summer safety checklist for families ahead of CPR & AED Awareness Week, June 1-7

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. May 27, 2025 — Palm Beach County and Treasure Coast schools are out for the summer, and the American Heart Association is calling on parents and families to learn Hands-Only CPR so this summer break can be as safe as it is fun.

More than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States each year[1], and 90% of people who have a cardiac arrest will not survive.

According to the American Heart Association, more than 23,000 children experience cardiac arrest each year, with nearly 40% related to sports and nearly 20% occurring in infants. If performed immediately, CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival, yet less than half of people actually receive the help they need from a bystander. With school out for summer, children will be away from teachers and coaches who might be trained in CPR, making it crucial for parents to know this life-saving skill.
