CMS Rule Phases Out Fax Machines, Snail Mail to Save Taxpayers $781.98 Million a Year
MARCH 20. 2026 – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is slashing wasteful spending and antiquated paperwork by swapping out faxing and mailing for streamlined electronic transactions. This action lets providers spend less time on administrative hassle and more time caring for patients.
The Administrative Simplification; Adoption of Standards for Health Care Claims Attachments Transactions and Electronic Signatures Final Rule is projected to save the healthcare industry roughly $781 million annually by establishing national standards for the electronic exchange of clinical documentation used to support health care claims. The rule also adopts standards for electronic signatures to ensure secure, authenticated transmission of this information.
“The 1980s called, and they want their fax machines back,” said CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. “The futuristic medical breakthroughs we’ve achieved, like augmented reality glasses that give surgeons X-ray vision, shouldn’t have to coexist with administrative systems that often lag decades behind. This new rule will modernize American healthcare by standardizing electronic claims attachments and enabling secure electronic signatures. Because every minute providers save on paperwork is another minute they can spend caring for patients.”

Baptist Health International and Bahamas Wellness Health System Formalize Collaboration to Advance Healthcare in The Bahamas
Memorandum of Understanding expands clinical collaboration, education and training opportunities in Eleuthera and beyond
March 19, 2026 – Baptist Health International, part of Baptist Health South Florida, and Bahamas Wellness Health System have formalized a new collaboration through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery, professional education and clinical collaboration in The Bahamas.
The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation focused on expanding access to specialized medical expertise, supporting clinical training and observership opportunities, facilitating second medical opinions and promoting multidisciplinary peer-to-peer consultation between physicians.
“This MOU represents an important step forward in our mission to deliver safe, high-quality care that meets international standards,” said Arlington Lightbourne, M.D., president and chief executive officer of Bahamas Wellness Health System and Eleuthera Wellness Hospital. “By collaborating with Baptist Health International, we are creating new opportunities for mentorship, professional development and access to advanced expertise that will directly benefit our patients and care teams.”
Under the agreement, patients treated within the Bahamas Wellness network may access second medical opinions from Baptist Health physicians and receive support with referrals when advanced care is required. The collaboration also explores opportunities for teleconsultation services, and knowledge exchange designed to enhance patient outcomes while reducing the need for travel.
Healthcare professionals within Bahamas Wellness Health System will benefit from educational initiatives that may include participation in symposiums and conferences, clinical observerships and professional training programs supported by Baptist Health International. The agreement also supports the development of best practices, policies and staff education, and guidance for international accreditation readiness.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County and Henderson Behavioral Health Launch New Wellness Partnership to Support Youth, Families and Mentors
March 18, 2026 — Building on the success of its Little Steps, Big Strides program, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County (BBBS Broward) has announced a transformational new partnership with Henderson Behavioral Health designed to strengthen overall wellness for youth, families, mentors and staff across the organization.
The collaboration brings together two long-standing community nonprofits to create a comprehensive, long-term wellness initiative that equips young people with healthy coping skills to navigate major life challenges and everyday stressors including anxiety, depression, bullying, cyberbullying, academic pressures, navigating college applications, identity-related stress, suicidal ideation and family challenges.
“Mentorship has always been about more than academic success. It’s about helping young people feel supported, confident and prepared for whatever life brings their way,” said Malena Mendez, President & CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County. “Through this partnership with Henderson Behavioral Health, we’re expanding our impact by surrounding our Littles, their families and our Bigs with accessible wellness resources that complement the life-changing power of mentoring.”
BBBS Broward currently serves approximately 1,400 Littles throughout the county. Initial funding will allow the program to support at least 240 youth annually at no cost to participants. Services will be available to Littles, Bigs, families and BBBS of Broward County staff including match specialists who routinely navigate complex and sometimes traumatic situations involving youth and families.
Henderson Behavioral Health clinicians will provide individual and group wellness sessions, home visits when appropriate and training for mentors, families and staff to help them recognize early warning signs of distress and respond with compassion and care.

Encompass Health announces plans to build a 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Bear, Delaware
March 18, 2026 — Encompass Health Corp. (NYSE: EHC) today announced plans to build a freestanding, 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Bear, Delaware.
The hospital will serve patients recovering from debilitating illnesses and injuries, including strokes and other neurological disorders, brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions. In addition to 24-hour nursing care, the hospital will offer physical, occupational and speech therapies designed to help patients restore function and improve their quality of life. Care will be provided by specialized nurses, therapists and physicians.
The hospital will feature private patient rooms, a spacious therapy gym with advanced rehabilitation technologies, an activities of daily living suite, an in-house dialysis suite, and a dining room, pharmacy and therapy courtyard.

Walk toward mental wellness 5K units Fort Myers community, raises $83,347 for mental health resources
NAMI Southwest Florida’s Sunset Strides 5K inspires walkers to share stories, resources and break mental health stigma
March 18, 2026 – NAMI Southwest Florida hosted the eighth annual Sunset Strides 5K on Saturday, March 14 in downtown Fort Myers.
This year, 589 walkers raised $83,347 which directly supports mental health education, crisis intervention, peer-led services, and vital community resources for those affected by mental illness.
Following an afternoon of live music, exhibits and presentations, the walk to mental wellness took a scenic sunset route from Fort Myers Centennial Park to the U.S. 41 Bridge and back.
“We are so thankful for everyone who walked toward mental wellness with us,” said Vacharee Howard, CEO of NAMI Southwest Florida. “Showing up for each other and walking together symbolizes that no one walks alone in their mental health journey.”

Lee Health Welcomes Largest Class of New Residents to Join in Summer 2026
March 20, 2026 —Lee Health is set to welcome the largest residency class in its history this July, as 63 new physicians and 5 new pharmacists matched to the health system this week during Match Day 2026. Chosen from a competitive pool of more than 5,000 applicants worldwide, this record-breaking cohort includes 63 physician residents training through Florida State University College of Medicine programs in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, along with the first classes of Transitional Year and Obstetrics and Gynecology residents and the longstanding pharmacy residency program.
This is the first class of residents for both the Transitional Year and the OB/GYN programs based at Cape Coral Hospital. Those classes will join the Internal Medicine residency program, which is in its fourth year and will be accepting twenty new residents for a three-year training period. The Family Medicine residency program, based at Lee Memorial Hospital, increased its class size to eleven new residents annually following continued growth since its inception..
After graduating from either an allopathic medical school, which awards an M.D. degree, or an osteopathic medical school, which grants a D.O. degree, physicians are required to complete residency training in their chosen specialty to practice medicine independently.
“We are thrilled to welcome this exceptional and diverse group of resident physicians to Lee Health,” said Alfred Gitu, M.D., Chief Academic Officer for Lee Health. “Training the next generation of outstanding clinicians is at the heart of our mission, and we are grateful to our community for embracing these learners as they begin their journey. Hospital welcomes new class of internal medicine residents on Match Day
MARCH 19, 2026 — HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital celebrated Match Day today, welcoming 12 new physicians to its Internal Medicine Residency Program. Match Day is a nationwide event when graduating medical students learn where they will complete their residency training.
Incoming residents appeared on a large video screen, calling in from around the world. Several current hospital residents gathered to welcome them virtually. This Match Day was a themed celebration, complete with a “Golden Ticket” motif. There were more than 3,000 applicants but only 12 received the “Golden Ticket” to join the team.
“These physicians were carefully chosen and during the next three years we will partner with them for their training. This is a tough, hard and long process but we will come along side them as they work to be competent and compassionate physicians who serve our community,” said Michael Schadorf-Larty, MD program director of the HCA Florida Healthcare/USF Morsani College of Medicine GME- Tampa South, Sarasota Doctors Hospital program.

Mayo Clinic study demonstrates safety, feasibility of delivering chemotherapy at home
MARCH 19, 2026- In a study published in NEJM Catalyst, Mayo Clinic researchers have demonstrated that chemotherapy can be safely delivered in patients’ homes.
The study evaluated Mayo Clinic’s Cancer CARE Beyond Walls (Connected Access and Remote Expertise), a model that combines virtual care, remote patient monitoring and in-home clinical services to deliver cancer treatment outside traditional infusion centers.
In the pilot study, a multidisciplinary team delivered 93 IV chemotherapy infusions to 10 patients in their homes. Researchers reported no treatment-related infusion reactions or catheter-related infections, supporting the safety and feasibility of this approach.
“Cancer care has traditionally required patients to spend long hours in infusion centers, often far from home,” says Roxana Dronca, M.D., site director of the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center in Florida and director of Mayo Clinic Cancer CARE Beyond Walls. “This model allows us to safely bring high-quality care directly to patients, reducing burden while maintaining the standards patients expect from Mayo Clinic.”
The study highlights the potential of home-based chemotherapy to reduce the physical, emotional and financial burdens associated with cancer treatment. Patients avoided travel time and experienced fewer disruptions to daily life while maintaining a continuous connection with their care team through virtual visits and remote monitoring.
Most participants surveyed reported high satisfaction with at-home care and said they would recommend the model to others.
“This approach is about more than convenience,” Dr. Dronca says. “It’s about improving quality of life during treatment and expanding access to care for patients who may face barriers to reaching traditional cancer centers.”

AMA applauds bill to exempt physicians from $100,000 H-1B fee
MARCH 17, 2026 – The American Medical Association (AMA) applauds the introduction of bipartisan legislation to exempt physicians and other health care professionals from the $100,000 filing fee on new H-1B visa petitions. The bill (PDF) aligns with the AMA’s efforts to build and maintain a strong health care workforce to serve the needs of all patients.
International medical graduates (IMGs) make up about one in four practicing physicians in the U.S., often working in underserved areas with higher rates of poverty and chronic disease. The $100,000 filing fee for H-1B petitions adds significant costs for hospitals and private practices, making it more difficult to hire physicians and other health care professionals. The added cost will worsen shortages, increase wait times, and force patients to travel farther for care.
“Patients across the country are feeling the effects of the growing physician shortage,” said AMA President Bobby Mukkamala, MD. “Medicare patients and people in rural and underserved areas already struggle to get the care they need. In many such communities, international medical graduates play a vital role in providing care and ensuring patients can see a doctor when they need one. The AMA supports this legislation to ensure the new $100,000 fee does not make it harder to recruit highly skilled physicians.”

AHA: White House releases national AI policy framework

The framework includes several recommendations for Congress, including establishing regulatory sandboxes to foster AI application development, providing resources to make federal data accessible to industry, and a proposal to not create new federal rulemaking bodies to regulate AI. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has finalized the Administrative Simplification; Adoption of Standards for Health Care Claims Attachments Transactions and Electronic Signatures Final Rule (CMS-0053-F).
This groundbreaking final rule establishes the first-ever Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-adopted standards for health care claims attachments, enabling the secure electronic exchange of health care claims-related supporting clinical documentation such as medical records, x-rays and imaging, clinical notes, telemedicine visit documentation and laboratory results.
The rule also establishes requirements for electronic signatures to ensure health care claims attachment transactions are secure, authenticated, and compliant with federal standards.
