AmpuShield®: Reducing Fall Injury and Optimizing Outcomes for Amputees
By Matthew Klein
Falls among amputees are a serious concern. Studies show that over 16% of amputees experience a fall during their acute post-surgical hospital stay, and almost a third of patients experience a fall sometime during their inpatient rehabilitation. 1-4 These falls often lead to costly and time-consuming revision surgeries and can lengthen acute stays, which can strain hospital resources.3
Post-Operative Limb Protection with AmpuShield®
Over 40 years of clinical studies have documented the advantages of removable rigid dressings (RRDs), such as Hanger Clinic’s proprietary line of AmpuShield® below-knee and above-knee limb protectors.1-4 Some proven benefits include wound protection, faster healing times, earlier ambulation, easy access to wounds for inspection, edema control, contracture prevention, and reducing the risk of costly revisions due to falls.
AmpuShield is appropriate for transtibial and transfemoral amputation patients and is clinically proven to optimize patient outcomes and reduce the length of hospital stay. It was intentionally designed with a rigid yet comfortable plastic that, in conjunction with the strapping system, provides compression to reduce swelling and shapes limbs for a more effective transition to a prosthesis. A 3-inch foam pad at the distal end of the device helps protect the limb and wound during recovery and rehabilitation. Both custom and off-the-shelf options are available, including softer or more rigid materials, depending on the patient’s needs.

| Cano Health Clinics Offer ‘Family Environment’
You don’t have to engage in a long conversation with Dr. Pablo Alonso to realize the heart he has for his patients. Dr. Alonso is chief medical officer of Cano Health, which caters to the senior population in its 80 medical centers throughout South Florida and other areas of the state, doing so in what he calls “a very warm and family-like environment.”
Dr. Alonso said the care Cano Health provides is both individualized and personal. “All of us are individuals and all of us have different health needs that need to be addressed. The only way you can effectively address these needs and have good outcomes is by personalizing the care and tailoring it to that particular patient.”
Patients can receive care at Cano Health just like at any medical center. As Dr. Alonso said, “We can handle all medical and chronic conditions; whatever the patient has, we can take care of it. Just like a doctor’s office. We at Cano focus on health and prevention.” Patients can be scheduled for mammograms and screenings for colorectal cancer. Diabetics can make sure their blood sugar is under control to help prevent the complications of diabetes. He added that if something cannot be treated at the medical center, the patient would then be referred to a specialist or scheduled for a procedure. “We coordinate the care for our patients, it’s very comprehensive care.”
So, while Cano medical centers function like doctors’ offices, what’s NOT like a doctor’s office is the family-like atmosphere patients will experience. As Dr. Alonso explained, the human touch that occurs when a patient walks into a clinic is what makes Cano Health unique. “When you come into a medical center, you will see a warm, family environment. Even among ourselves, we are like family, and we take care of our patients that way.”

Tampa General Hospital Stands Strong Against Milton, Remains Open to Support Community in Aftermath
As the Region’s Only Level 1 Trauma Center, the Academic Health System is Actively Working with Emergency Response Teams to Treat Injuries and Other Health Emergencies in the Wake of Hurricane Milton.
Tampa, FL – October 10, 2024 – Tampa General Hospital remains open as emergency response teams are activated to support communities impacted by Hurricane Milton. In the days leading up to landfall, Tampa General implemented a comprehensive mitigation plan to ensure physicians and team members could continue to safely provide care for patients.
“Preparing for Hurricane Milton was an incredible effort by the entire team and a true test of our resources, but it ensured we could continue to provide exceptional care for our patients in a high-quality, safe and uninterrupted environment before, during and after the storm,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General Hospital. “Tampa General is open to support communities impacted and particularly our first responders. Working together, we will come back from Milton stronger than ever.”
As the region’s only Level I Trauma Center, Tampa General stands ready to treat and support patients in the communities hardest hit by Hurricane Milton. The academic health system is actively working with emergency responders to treat injuries and other health emergencies in the wake of the storm. In collaboration with other health care facilities throughout the state, Tampa General is accepting patient transfers as needed.
At this time, current conditions at Tampa General are:
-While the storm surge was not as high as forecasted, the AquaFence stood strong against the hurricane force winds and effectively prevented flooding. The AquaFence is a water-impermeable barrier that can withstand storm surge up to 15 feet above sea level.
-TGH did not experience major power outages. However, the hospital proactively activated its on-site power plant to ensure there were no interruptions to operations. The central energy plant is 16,000 square feet, located 33 feet above sea level and runs on natural gas or diesel. -Care for patients continues. Tampa General physicians and team members who are trained in emergency management remained on site through the storm.
-The Emergency Room at Tampa General’s main campus on Davis Islands remained open through the storm and continues to accept and treat patients. -TGH Brooksville, TGH Spring Hill and TGH Crystal River Emergency Rooms are open and caring for patients. -The TGH Brandon Emergency Center at 10740 Palm River Road and the TGH Kennedy Emergency Center at 1301 West Kennedy Boulevard will reopen at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 10.
Tampa General plans to resume normal operations on Friday, October 11.

SMH Hurricane Update – OCTOBER 10, 2024
OCTOBER 10, 2024- SMH-Sarasota, SMH-Venice and our freestanding ER in North Port stayed busy before, during and after the storm. Thankfully, our facilities fared well, despite heavy winds, rain and surges nearby. Both hospitals are on high ground – our Sarasota campus at 19 feet and our Venice campus at 16.5 feet. We had an influx of patients as the storm headed our way and hospitals around us began closing and evacuating patients.
“We couldn’t be prouder of our team. They left their homes and many left their families to be here for our patients and community during one of the most alarming hurricanes approaching the Suncoast,” said David Verinder, CEO of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System. “They reported for duty on Tuesday evening and helped provide care and support for more than 1,000 patients and medical evacuees. And today, they continued to care for those who were injured or who developed serious medical conditions during the storm.”
SMH’s Relief team (Team B) began arriving throughout the day today, as road conditions allowed, to relieve the Response team (Team A).
All in all, SMH estimates its staff cared for, supported and sheltered more than 4,000 people at its 2 hospitals and freestanding ER, including patients, medically dependent people assigned by the county, patients evacuated from surrounding hospitals, physicians, staff and some of their children and pets (dogs, cats and one bunny that was an emotional support buddy for a nervous dog). SMH delivered 7 babies during the storm.

FCC ANNOUNCES SIX-MONTH WAIVER TO PROVIDE DISCOUNTED PHONE AND BROADBAND SERVICE SUPPORT FOR HURRICANE MILTON SURVIVORS AND FUTURE STORMS
Agency Votes to Offer Access to Lifeline Program to Stay Connected During Recovery Process
WASHINGTON, October 11, 2024—The Federal Communications Commission today took quick action to assist people impacted by Hurricane Milton by providing discounted phone and broadband service through its Lifeline program and adjusted its requirements so any qualifying survivors of similar natural disasters can also access this support to stay connected. The agency voted to temporarily waive certain Lifeline program eligibility rules to ensure that consumers receiving federal disaster assistance can easily apply for and enroll in the Lifeline program. Households are also eligible for the Lifeline program if they receive emergency food assistance from the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) in the areas affected by Hurricane Milton. The agency previously voted to temporarily waive these Lifeline eligibility rules to assist survivors of Hurricane Helene.
The Lifeline program currently offers qualifying low-income consumers discounts on fixed or mobile voice or broadband internet access service, as well as on bundled service. Qualifying low-income consumers can receive an up to $9.25 monthly discount on Lifeline-supported broadband internet access service or an up to $5.25 monthly discount on Lifeline-supported voice service. Lifeline consumers residing on qualifying Tribal lands can receive up to a $34.25 monthly discount on Lifeline-supported service.
Today’s waiver allows households to enter the Lifeline program if they are receiving individual assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Individuals and Households Program (IHP) as a result of the impacts of Hurricane Milton. This builds on the relief granted by the agency earlier this week to prevent existing Lifeline subscribers from being disconnected in the areas affected by Hurricane Milton while they recover from the storm’s effects.

Fact Sheet: Biden-Harris Administration Takes Action to Ensure Americans Can Access Medical Supplies Following Hurricanes Helene and Milton
As a result of these actions, significantly more IV fluid is available this week versus last week, with increased access expected in coming weeks
October 11, 2024 – Following storm damage from Hurricane Helene at Baxter International Inc.’s facility in North Carolina, the Biden-Harris Administration continues taking action to support access to IV fluids, including ensuring restoration of key production sites, protecting products, and opening imports, in partnership with manufacturers, distributors, hospitals, and other stakeholders. As a result of these steps, hospitals have 50% more product available to them this week compared to last, and access is expected to continue to increase in the weeks to come.
Moving and Protecting Product:
-Restoring access to Baxter facility. In the hours after the hurricane, the federal officials immediately began assessing damage to Baxter’s North Cove facility. Three bridges to the facility were heavily damaged by Helene, and ASPR and FEMA worked with Baxter to regain access to the plant and engage in recovery efforts.
-Moving supply for the last week. Much of the inventory in the North Carolina plant has been saved, and Baxter began moving truckloads of product out of the damaged facility on Sunday, October 6.
- Protecting product in Florida. One manufacturer, B. Braun, has a manufacturing facility in Daytona, FL. ASPR worked to proactively move 60 truckloads of IV fluids out of the Daytona plant, ensuring it was safe from Hurricane Milton impact.
As a result of the swift action to restore access, on October 9th, Baxter was able to announce increased product allocation, with hospitals able to order 50% more product than the prior week. Hospital allocation increased from 40% to 60% and distributor allocations increased from as low as 10% to 60%. This sharp increase in product availability will be felt over the coming days.
Increasing U.S. Supply:
-FDA regulatory action to allow additional imports. As of October 9, FDA announced the temporary importation of 19 different IV solution and dialysis products from 5 different international manufacturing plans to bolster domestic supply. FDA continues to evaluate additional options around the world.
-ASPR supporting transportation. ASPR is supporting efforts to airlift new product into the U.S. to get it to patients as quickly as possible.
-Expanding compounding of IV solutions. On October 11, FDA released guidance providing new flexibilities related to compounding of IV solutions. This guidance will also make it easier for hospitals and other facilities to make their own IV solutions during the shortage.
-Expediting other reviews. HHS is working with manufacturers in the U.S. and around the world to increase their production capacity. FDA is expediting regulatory reviews and ASPR is providing technical assistance.
-Extending shelf-life. FDA will expedite consideration of any shelf-life extension requests manufacturers submit for short-dated product.
-Preventing price gouging. The federal government has already put companies on notice that price gouging for essential medical supplies like IV solutions will not be tolerated. On Wednesday the Justice Department, Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warned that law enforcement would use every tool available to stop price gouging, price fixing, and other illegal scams. They encourage people to report violations at http://www.justice.gov/DisasterComplaintForm or http://www.reportfraud.ftc.gov/.
Baxter will further increase allocations in the weeks to come based on these actions. Updates on storm response efforts can be found at their website .

First wave of COVID-19 increased risk of heart attack, stroke up to three years later
NIH-funded study focused on original virus strain, unvaccinated participants during pandemic.
October 10, 2024- Infection from COVID-19 appeared to significantly increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death for up to three years among unvaccinated people early in the pandemic when the original SARS-CoV-2 virus strain emerged, according to a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-supported study. The findings, among people with or without heart disease, confirm previous research showing an associated higher risk of cardiovascular events after a COVID-19 infection but are the first to suggest the heightened risk might last up to three years following initial infection, at least among people infected in the first wave of the pandemic.
Compared to people with no COVID-19 history, the study found those who developed COVID-19 early in the pandemic had double the risk for cardiovascular events, while those with severe cases had nearly four times the risk. The findings were published in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology.

NIH launches large study to tackle type 2 diabetes in young people
Effort to identify risk factors for youth-onset type 2 diabetes to improve prevention and treatment.
OCTOBER 9, 2024- The National Institutes of Health has launched a nationwide consortium to address the dramatic rise in youth diagnosed with type 2 diabetes over the past two decades, a trend that is expected to continue. The effort aims to advance understanding of the biologic, social, and environmental drivers of youth-onset type 2 diabetes, with the goals of determining which children are at highest risk for developing the disease and how to better prevent, screen for, and manage type 2 diabetes in young people.
“Our children who are overweight or have obesity are at risk, but we don’t know how best to identify the children who will progress to type 2 diabetes,” said Rose Gubitosi-Klug, M.D., Ph.D., study lead, and chief of pediatric endocrinology at Case Western Reserve University/Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, Cleveland. “This study will bring us closer to our goal of prevention of type 2 diabetes in future generations of youth.”
The observational study is funded by the NIH’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and builds on previous NIDDK-funded research indicating that youth-onset type 2 diabetes is more challenging to treat and progresses more aggressively compared to adult-onset type 2 diabetes. In youth with type 2 diabetes, good blood glucose control is harder to achieve, and the ability of the pancreas to secrete insulin declines much more rapidly. Many young people with type 2 diabetes also don’t respond well to metformin, the drug most commonly used as the first-line treatment for diabetes in adults. In addition, youth-onset type 2 diabetes is associated with earlier development of diabetes-related complications, such as damage to the eyes, kidneys, and nerves.
