Healthcare Network launches Wellness Warriors to tackle childhood obesity

July 18, 2025 — Healthcare Network, the largest pediatric care provider in Collier County, has launched a new evidence-based, multi-disciplinary initiative to tackle the rise in obesity among local children and teens.

Made possible by grants from the Naples Children and Education Foundation (NCEF), founders of the Naple Winter Wine Festival, and Blue Cross Blue Shield, Wellness Warriors is a proactive, comprehensive and culturally appropriate effort to reduce childhood obesity through nutritional, medical and behavioral health care, as well as family involvement alongside child-focused interventions.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, one in five U.S. children and adolescents are obese, which affects some groups more than others, including adolescents, Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black children and children in families with lower incomes. For children, obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) at or above the 95th percentile for age and sex.

Healthcare Network partnered with the University of Florida Department of Endocrinology and University of Central Florida College of Medicine to identify the needs and the highest-risk communities, which include Immokalee, Golden Gate and East Naples. The team worked collaboratively to develop a protocol based on evidence-based guidelines.

“We looked at climbing obesity rates and identified 102 children in Collier County who qualified as obese and led them through a pilot program that included nutritional counseling, exercise and behavioral health support,” said Dr. Salvatore Anzalone, medical director of pediatrics and vice president of clinical business development at Healthcare Network.

When it Comes to Healing, Your Surroundings Matt

July 18, 2025 – Imagine a health care facility where natural light helps lift a patient’s mood, where the art on the wall soothes anxiety, where aromatherapy spreads a sense of serenity, and piano music greets visitors as they come in. That describes the future ambiance of the University of Miami Health System’s newest outpatient facility, UHealth SoLé Mia, a seven-story, 370,000-square-foot medical center in North Miami-Dade scheduled to open this fall.

“From the onset, our guiding principle in the design of this building has been to promote healing and recovery in patients, to support their caregivers and family, and to provide our staff with an environment that is conducive to delivering the best care,” says Vandana Pathak, the Assistant Vice President for Ambulatory Service at UHealth.

Long before the official groundbreaking in 2022, architects and UHealth leadership met with patients, family members, caregivers and staff to gather information about how to meet each group’s needs. The resulting design incorporated those suggestions while also focusing on the pillars of healing architecture.

New Study Highlights Nurse Practitioner Autonomy as Key to Addressing Health Care Provider Shortage

July 14, 2025 – With the health care industry facing provider shortages amid a growing demand for quality care, a new study from researchers at Florida Atlantic University highlights how temporary expansions in nurse practitioner (NP) autonomy during the COVID-19 pandemic helped alleviate provider shortages.

While NPs have fought for years to have the legal right to work autonomously, the COVID-19 pandemic served as a turning point to show the need for NPs to provide quality primary care.

“For better or worse, COVID blew the door open by showing how trusted and essential nurse practitioners are,” said study co-author Scott Feyereisen, Ph.D., associate professor of health care administration in FAU’s College of Business. “Many states with higher COVID caseloads started to rely more on nurse practitioners to help address the fallout from these rapidly increasing caseloads.”

Researchers examined the legal and sociological components surrounding NP professionalization, or the ability for NPs to prescribe medication and manage patient care independently during the COVID-19 pandemic, alongside the historical limitations NPs have faced on the scope of their practice.

Patient-Specific Technologies Help People with Bowed Legs Avoid Knee Replacement for Longer

July 15, 2025 – Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) presented findings at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) annual meeting demonstrating how surgeons are revitalizing a historic orthopedic procedure to help patients with bowed legs restore proper limb alignment, enhance knee function, and potentially avoid knee replacement surgery through the use of cutting-edge technology and improved patient outcomes.

First introduced in the late 1800’s, the procedure, called knee osteotomy, involves cutting and reshaping the shinbone or thighbone to relieve pressure on the knee joint. It was initially used as a common treatment for arthritis and later for various orthopedic conditions and injuries, but it became less popular with the advent of the modern knee replacement in the 1970s. Nevertheless, surgeons continued to use and refine the technique. Today, the approach is used to fix bowleg deformity and prevent the need for knee replacement surgery, which carries a higher risk of complications particularly in people under age 50.

Bowleg deformity is an incorrect alignment around the knee that can affect people of all ages. The many causes of bowleg syndrome range from illnesses such as Blount’s disease to improperly healed fractures and vitamin deficiencies.

Patients who had knee osteotomy reported positive outcomes and significant improvements in quality of life, according to a comprehensive review of the literature on the technique that was led by Anil S, Ranawat, MD, Chief of the Hip and Knee Division of the Sports Medicine Institute at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). High patient satisfaction rates included less pain, better movement, and very few complications after the surgery, which helped delay or avoid the need for knee replacement in the vast majority of cases. The results are being presented at the AOSSM annual meeting.

“The development of new technologies, such as digital software planning, advanced CT imaging, and other patient-specific tools, is enabling us to resolve patients’ knee pain and preserve their knee function for a longer period of time,” explains Dr. Ranawat. “This modern evolution of an old operation has helped us tailor these procedures so that they are done in the safest, most precise way possible.”

Osteotomy is no longer a one-size-fits-all approach. “These improved outcomes were made possible by the advent of patient-specific instrumentation (PSI), in which a surgeon uses a patient’s CT scan and digital software to do a virtual surgery and plan the ideal operation tailored to the individual’s anatomy and needs,” explains Dr. Ranawat, an expert in joint restoration and preservation.

Global childhood vaccination coverage holds steady, yet over 14 million infants remain unvaccinated – WHO, UNICEF

July 15 2025  – In 2024, 89% of infants globally – about 115 million – received at least one dose of the diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP)-containing vaccine, and 85% — roughly 109 million – completed all three doses, according to new national immunization coverage data released today by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.

Compared to 2023, around 171 000 more children received at least one vaccine, and one million more completed the full three-dose DTP series. While the gains are modest, they signal continued progress by countries working to protect children, even amid growing challenges.

Still, nearly 20 million infants missed at least one dose of DTP-containing vaccine last year, including 14.3 million “zero-dose” children who never received a single dose of any vaccine. That’s 4 million more than the 2024 target needed to stay on track with Immunization Agenda 2030 goals, and 1.4 million more than in 2019, the baseline year for measuring progress.

CMS Finds 2.8 Million Americans Potentially Enrolled in Two or More Medicaid/ACA Exchange Plans

Unnecessary, Duplicate Enrollment Wasting $14 Billion Annually

WASHINGTON, DC—JULY 17, 2025—The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) continue to crush fraud, waste, and abuse in America’s healthcare programs by stopping duplicative enrollment in government health programs, with the potential to save taxpayers approximately $14 billion annually.

A recent analysis of 2024 enrollment data identified 2.8 million Americans either enrolled in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in multiple states or simultaneously enrolled in both Medicaid/CHIP and a subsidized Affordable Care Act (ACA) Exchange plan.

CMS is taking action to ensure individuals are only enrolled in one program and to stop the federal government from paying multiple times for these individuals to receive health coverage. In addition, as a result of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, CMS now has new tools to prevent the federal government from paying twice for the same person’s care—saving billions and restoring integrity to the system.

“HHS staff uncovered millions of Americans who were illegally or improperly enrolled in Medicaid and ACA plans,” said U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “Under the Trump Administration, we will no longer tolerate waste, fraud, and abuse at the expense of our most vulnerable citizens. With the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill, we now have the tools to strengthen these vital programs for generations to come.”

HHS & State Department: The United States Rejects Amendments to International Health Regulations

JULY 18, 2025—U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Secretary of State Marco Rubio today issued a Joint Statement of formal rejection by the United States of the 2024 International Heath Regulations (IHR) Amendments by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The amended IHR would give the WHO the ability to order global lockdowns, travel restrictions, or any other measures it sees fit to respond to nebulous “potential public health risks.” These regulations are set to become binding if not rejected by July 19, 2025, regardless of the United States’ withdrawal from the WHO.

“The proposed amendments to the International Health Regulations open the door to the kind of narrative management, propaganda, and censorship that we saw during the COVID pandemic,” Secretary Kennedy said. “The United States can cooperate with other nations without jeopardizing our civil liberties, without undermining our Constitution, and without ceding away America’s treasured sovereignty.”

Secretary Kennedy also released a video explaining the action to the American people.
