HOW TO ASK YOUR HEALTHCARE EMPLOYER FOR PRODUCTION NUMBERS
By Ben Assad Mirza, Esq., LLM, MPHA
As a healthcare professional, if you want to improve the efficiency of your work, then asking your employer for production numbers can be an effective strategy. Production numbers are a quantifiable measure of the amount of work you and your colleagues perform, and they can be used to identify areas for improvement and to ensure that you are meeting your quotas. However, asking your employer for production numbers can be a sensitive issue. Here are some tips on how to approach your employer respectfully. Healthcare providers with a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number have the right to request production numbers.
Identify your objective
Before you approach your employer, understand why you need the production numbers. For example, you may need to know how many patients you have seen in a given period, how many tests you have conducted or how many procedures you have completed. Knowing the specific information that you need will help you ask for it more effectively. Be clear about why you want production numbers. Do you want to see where your team stands in comparison to other teams? Are you interested in seeing how much more efficient you could be if you made some changes to your work processes? Or do you simply want to make sure that you are meeting your quotas? Whatever your reason, make sure you can articulate it clearly. Your employer is more likely to be receptive if they understand your motivation.

DURING AND AFTER HURRICANE SEASON, HOSPITALS ARE READY
By Mary Mayhew
Hurricane season is officially here. Since June 1, there have already been four named tropical storms, and last month forecasters raised their estimates for the Atlantic hurricane season.
The best estimates for this season are 18 named storms, producing nine hurricanes.
As health care providers with a commitment to remain open and accessible to deliver safe, high-quality, 24/7 care to anyone who needs it, hospitals are unique in the health care ecosystem. While prioritizing the health and safety of their patients and staff, hospitals do everything possible to stay open, available, and operational before, during, and after major storms.
That capacity doesn’t happen by chance. The availability of care 365 days a year, no matter the hour of the day or night, for anyone who needs it, is the result of intensive, long-term planning and major financial investments in infrastructure, human resources, supplies, and operations.
FHA surveyed hospitals in 2022 about their hurricane season preparedness activities and found that hospitals have taken precautionary measures to safeguard water supplies, reduce the risk of flooding, and protect emergency power systems before the start of hurricane season. They have also created mitigation strategies to secure resource and supply chain needs before a storm’s landfall. READ MORE

TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL ADVANCED KIDNEY CARE GROWS TEAM BY ADDING DR. RAMON ALBERTO ORTIZ IN PALM BEACH
Dr. Ortiz brings more than a decade of patient care experience to TGH Advanced Kidney Care in Palm Beach County
August 2, 2023 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Advanced Kidney Care, which has been delivering world-class nephrology services to Palm Beach County for more than 30 years, has expanded its team by adding Dr. Ramon Alberto Ortiz. Ortiz is a board-certified internal medicine specialist and is fellowship-trained in nephrology.
Ortiz brings more than a decade of patient care experience to his role at TGH Advanced Kidney Care. He was a hospitalist at Florida Flagler Hospital (now AdventHealth) in Palm Coast, Fla., and Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Fla. He received his medical degree from Universidad Iberoamericana in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. From there, Ortiz completed an internship in psychiatry, as well as a residency in internal medicine, at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., before completing his fellowship in nephrology in June 2023 at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, Fla.
“As part of my previous role as a hospitalist, I had the opportunity to consult with Dr. David Amrose and the TGH Advanced Kidney Care team on my patients who required nephrology care. I was always amazed by the professionalism, dedication, and patient-centric care they delivered,” said Ortiz. “I am honored to join a group of outstanding clinicians and to contribute to their goals of bringing world-class patient care to the community they serve.”
In addition to Amrose, TGH Advanced Kidney Care is staffed by Dr. Imtiaz Ather and Dr. Kerim Oncu. The practice serves patients from its locations in Jupiter, Fla., and West Palm Beach and, one year ago, aligned with the world-class resources and specialists of Tampa General Hospital, one of the nation’s leading academic health systems. TGH Advanced Kidney Care is an integral part of connecting more residents in the Palm Beach and Treasure Coast communities to the complex kidney care they need.
“Thoughtful, compassionate patient care is of utmost importance to Dr. Ortiz. We developed a working relationship with him and knew him to be a strong hospitalist with a vast medical knowledge,” said Amrose, a nephrologist and managing partner with TGH Advanced Kidney Care. “When he developed a passion for nephrology and went on to earn his fellowship in it, we knew Dr. Ortiz would be an invaluable addition to the TGH Advanced Kidney Care practice.”

CLEVELAND CLINIC RESEARCHERS CONFIRM EARLY INTERVENTION CURBS PEANUT ALLERGIES IN BABIES
Study involved 22 infants enrolled in early peanut oral immunotherapy program at the health system’s Food Allergy Center of Excellence
AUGUST 3, 2023 – Cleveland Clinic researchers have found that starting peanut oral immunotherapy under medical supervision during infancy can improve a child’s immune response to the food over time. The findings were recently published in the Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology: In Practice.
Cleveland Clinic is the first health system in Northeast Ohio, and one of a few in the country, to offer oral immunotherapy for babies and toddlers who are allergic to peanuts. Through its Food Allergy Center of Excellence, children under age four have developed a tolerance for the food by eating tiny amounts of them in a step-by-step, controlled process.
“We’ve seen how peanut oral immunotherapy is well-tolerated in toddlers, but there is limited real-world evidence available to demonstrate the benefits in babies,” said Sandra Hong, M.D., allergist and director of the Food Allergy Center of Excellence at Cleveland Clinic. “We leveraged data from infants in our program to better understand the safety and efficacy of this treatment in children 12 months and younger.”
For the retrospective study, the research team reviewed data from 22 infants – ages 7 to 11 months – who received peanut oral immunotherapy at Cleveland Clinic’s Food Allergy Center of Excellence. Through an allergist and parent – implemented plan, children were started on a daily dose of 18 milligrams (about twice the weight of a grain of table salt) of peanut protein in the form of peanut butter or peanut powder. Over six months, they were slowly given larger servings to consume every day until they reached a maintenance dose of 500 milligrams (the equivalence of two peanut kernels).
Researchers found that all 22 babies in the cohort achieved this milestone. During treatment, more than half experienced mild allergic reactions which resolved on their own, and one required epinephrine. Around 27% of the babies had experienced no allergic reactions whatsoever.

TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL AND SIGNALLAMP COLLABORATE ON NEW REMOTE CHRONIC CARE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
The technology allows for seamless, real-time monitoring in the comfort of the patient’s home.
August 3, 2023 – Patients with serious illnesses continue to receive care without leaving home, thanks to a partnership between Tampa General Hospital (TGH) and Signallamp Health Inc., a leading chronic care management company based in Pennsylvania.
More than 1,000 Tampa General patients currently are linked to advanced monitoring systems that communicate with their health care providers, reducing the number of visits to a doctor’s office or hospital.
“It’s cost-effective, efficient and allows doctors to monitor the health of their patients while they are at home,’’ said Dr. Karna Patel, vice president for Tampa General Medical Group.
Remote patient management is a growing trend in health care that allows caregivers to receive important health information about patients via remote, wearable devices. These updates allow health care experts to track patients with such conditions as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure and high blood pressure. The technology also helps free up much-needed hospital beds.
Signallamp’s robust platform makes assessments of patients and aligns that information with Tampa General medical teams such as primary care physicians, clinical pharmacists, and specialty providers. The platform is simple and doesn’t require the use of smartphones or Wi-Fi. Patients plug into a hub and use wireless monitoring devices approved by their TGH provider, such as a blood pressure cuff, which communicate to the hub.

NEW CMS RULE PROMOTES HIGH-QUALITY CARE AND REWARDS HOSPITALS THAT DELIVER HIGH-QUALITY CARE TO UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS
On August 1, 2023, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a final payment rule for inpatient and long-term care hospitals that builds on the Biden-Harris Administration’s priorities to provide support to historically underserved and under-resourced communities and to promote the highest quality outcomes and safest care for all individuals. The fiscal year (FY) 2024 Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) and Long-Term Care Hospital (LTCH) Prospective Payment System (PPS) final rule updates Medicare payments and policies for hospitals as required by statute; adopts hospital quality measures to foster safety, equity, and reduce preventable harm in the hospital setting; and recognizes homelessness as an indicator of increased resource utilization in the acute inpatient hospital setting. This is consistent with the Administration’s goal of advancing health equity for all, including members of historically underserved and under-resourced communities, as described in the President’s January 20, 2021, Executive Order 13985 on “Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government.”
