DCMA Announces Inauguration of Patricia Ares-Romero, M.D.
MIAMI, FL – JUNE 5, 2024 – The Dade County Medical Association (DCMA) is proud to announce the inauguration of its new president, Patricia Ares-Romero, M.D., F.A.M.S.A. The transition of leadership took place on Saturday, June 1st, 2024, during the 114th DCMA Presidential Inauguration Gala, held at the JW Marriott-Miami on Brickell.
The event celebrated the accomplishments of the immediate past president, Dr. Carmel J. Barrau, M.D., and welcomed Dr. Patricia Ares-Romero, M.D., as the sixth female president in the association’s 121-year history. Dr. Ares-Romero’s presidency marks a significant milestone in the DCMA’s ongoing commitment to diversity and excellence in medical leadership.
In her inaugural address, Dr. Patricia Ares-Romero emphasized the importance of the association’s advocacy role. “During my tenure as the 114th president of the DCMA, my primary goal will be to strengthening advocacy for the quality and sustainability of the practice of medicine, on behalf of both physicians and patients.”

| CHANE PRICE, M.D., JOINS BAPTIST HEALTH MIAMI NEUROSCIENCE INSTITUTE
MIAMI, FL – June 6, 2024 – Board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation and pain management physician, Chane Price, M.D., has joined Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute. He specializes in nonsurgical spine care, minimally invasive spine care and interventional pain management. With the goal of relieving a patient’s chronic neck or lower back pain and returning functional abilities, Dr. Price performs such procedures as spinal cord stimulation, spinal cord stimulator implantation, nerve blocks, radiofrequency nerve ablation, kyphoplasty, image-guided injections, such as cervical and lumbar epidurals, and neuromodulation therapies.
Prior to joining Baptist Health, Dr. Price served as an assistant professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in the departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as well as Neurological Surgery. Additionally, he was on staff at Jackson Health System and the University of Miami Hospitals and Clinics.

RNA sequencing of patients in a Phase 2 trial pinpoints hyperactivated DNA damage response gene signature as a biomarker
MIAMI, FL – June 5, 2024 – Researchers from Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, have identified a new gene signature for glioblastoma through integrating genomics and transcriptomics. The study, titled “Base Excision Repair Inhibitor TRC102 and Temozolomide for Recurrent Glioblastoma (BERT): A Multicenter, Phase 2, Adult Brain Tumor Consortium Trial”, was published today in Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.
“Glioblastoma is an aggressive and lethal brain tumor. Nearly all patients experience tumor recurrence once conventional treatment strategies fail,” said Manmeet S. Ahluwalia, M.D., MBA, FASCO, Fernandez Family Foundation Endowed Chair in Cancer Research, Chief of Medical Oncology, Chief Scientific Officer, and Deputy Director at Miami Cancer Institute, and the first author and the principal investigator of the study which originated at Cleveland Clinic. “This trial has demonstrated a potential for better patient selection for therapeutic targeting using a hyperactivated DNA damage response signature.”

“This international collaboration brings together a multidisciplinary team of scientists, clinical researchers and physicians from across industry, government and healthcare,” said Lara Jehi, M.D., MHCDS, Chief Research Information Officer at Cleveland Clinic. “The research teams will leverage high performance and quantum computing to advance life sciences, with the goal of improving healthcare and accelerating new treatments for patients around the world. CLEVELAND CLINIC-LED STUDY LINKS SUGAR SUBSTITUTE TO INCREASED RISK OF HEART ATTACK AND STROKE
Xylitol is a common zero-calorie sweetener found in sugar-free candy and toothpaste
June 6, 2024 – Cleveland Clinic researchers found higher amounts of the sugar alcohol xylitol are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke.
The team, led by Stanley Hazen, M.D., Ph.D., confirmed the association in a large-scale patient analysis, preclinical research models and a clinical intervention study. Findings were published today in the European Heart Journal.
Xylitol is a common sugar substitute used in sugar-free candy, gums, baked goods and oral products like toothpaste. Over the past decade, the use of sugar substitutes, including sugar alcohols and artificial sweeteners, has increased significantly in processed foods that are promoted as healthy alternatives.

SYLVESTER CANCER EXPERT ENDORSES FDA APPROVAL OF NEW DRUG
The drug, imetelstat, provides a new option for patients suffering from anemia from their cancer
June 7, 2024 – Dr. Mikkael Sekeres is an expert in blood cancers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center – University of Miami Health System. He served as chair of the Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee for the trial that led to imetelstat vote of support at the FDA this week. Imetelstat, also known as Rytelo, is telomerase inhibitor for the treatment of transfusion-dependent anemia in patients with lower risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). It will be used for the treatment of certain adult patients with low- to intermediate-1 risk MDS who have not responded to, or have lost response to, or are ineligible for erythropoietin stimulating agents (ESA) used to aid blood transfusions.
“With the approval of the drug imetelstat to treat myelodysplastic syndromes, we finally have another approach we can offer to patients with profound and debilitating anemia from their cancer – one that is effective in 40% of patients, and long-lasting, with patients going one year without requiring blood transfusions. We have even shown that patients feel better on imetelstat, with lower rates of fatigue,” Dr. Sekeres said.

June 6, 2024 – The Area Agency on Aging of Broward County (AAABC) is commemorating WEAAD by hosting free in-person and virtual events throughout June:
In partnership with the Department of Elder Affairs and the Florida Area Agencies on Aging, which operate as 11 individual Aging and Disability Resource Centers across the state, AAABC will host a virtual workshop on Wednesday, June 12, to teach attendees how to spot, report and identify abuse and scams targeting older adults. On Friday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., the AAABC will host a World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Summit with representatives from Adult Protective Services, Florida S.H.I.N.E. NIH LAUNCHES $30 MILLION PILOT TO TEST FEASIBILITY OF A NATIONAL PRIMARY CARE RESEARCH NETWORK
Initiative aims to improve health outcomes by integrating research in everyday primary care settings.
June 6, 2024 – The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is investing approximately $30 million in total over fiscal years 2024 and 2025 to pilot a national primary care research network that integrates clinical research with community-based primary care. The new initiative called Communities Advancing Research Equity for Health – or CARE for Health – seeks to improve access to clinical research to inform medical care, particularly for those in communities historically underrepresented in clinical research or underserved in health care. Informed by the health needs of these communities, CARE for Health will help to grow an evidence base that contributes to improved patient outcomes, provide communities access to the best available scientific research and expand opportunities to participate in clinical trials and studies.
