UNDERSTANDING THE TWO MOST COMMON THYROID DISEASES
Elys Perez, M.D.
Learn About Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism
September 6, 2023 – The thyroid gland may be small, but it is essential to the human body. According to the American Thyroid Association, the hormones produced by the thyroid gland impact the tissues, cells and organs in our body.
The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck that controls many aspects of the body’s metabolism. It produces hormones that regulate the body’s metabolic rate controlling heart, muscle and digestive function, brain development and bone maintenance.
Hyperthyroidism is a condition that occurs when the thyroid gland produces too much hormone. Unexpected weight loss, bouts of energy that eventually lead to fatigue and exhaustion, increased heart rate, hand tremors, and anxiety are some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

CLEVELAND CLINIC SURVEY EXAMINES THE CURRENT STATE OF MEN’S HEALTH NATIONALLY AND IN FLORIDA
September 7, 2023 – A new survey by Cleveland Clinic highlights a disconnect between men’s perception of their health and their actual health habits. The survey, which was taken earlier this year by a national sample consisting of 1,000 U.S. males, 18 years of age and older, was issued as part of Cleveland Clinic’s eighth annual educational campaign, MENtion It®.
This year, the survey included a sample of men in Florida. The campaign aims to address the fact that men often do not mention health issues or take steps to prevent them.
In the survey, 85% of men in Florida said they believe they are leading a healthy lifestyle. However, the survey results show the habits and behaviors of many men tell a different story.
Almost half of men in Florida (43%) do not get a yearly physical 42% do not take care of their mental health
Only half of men said they keep a healthy diet (50%) 83% have experienced stress in the last six months Half (51%) of men declare spending between 1-2h/day on social platforms, and 17% say they scroll through social media for more than 5h daily.
The survey findings point to stress being a common factor among men. However, 60% of men in Florida said they are hesitant to seek professional help for mental health concerns such as stress, anxiety and depression. Like national findings, Money/Finances is the #1 top stress factor affecting men in Florida, indicated by 38%.
The survey also indicates that about one in three men living in Florida admit to experiencing issues having sex, but many do not seek professional help. Stress is the most mentioned factor that can impact sexual health (68%). Excessive weight (59%) and age (58%) follow.
Social media habits may also contribute to stress with almost one fifth (17%) of men in Florida saying they spend five hours per day on average scrolling through social media.
“Through this campaign, we hope to encourage men to be proactive with regular screenings,” said Matthew Goldman, MD, Family Health Physician at Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital. “Unfortunately, many men do not make their health a priority until they have a health scare or a major issue. Preventative screenings allow us to identify problems during the early stages when treatment is likely to result in positive outcomes.”

PHILIPS REACHES RESOLUTION OF US ECONOMIC LOSS LITIGATION
September 7, 2023 – Amsterdam, the Netherlands – Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA) announced today that the company and certain of its US subsidiaries, including Philips Respironics, have reached an agreement to resolve all economic loss claims in the US Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) related to Philips Respironics’ voluntary recall of certain sleep and respiratory care devices. This settlement, which is expected to be submitted to the US District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania later today, does not include or constitute any admission of liability, wrongdoing, or fault by any of the Philips parties.
The agreement, which is subject to approval by the court, will provide predefined cash awards to all eligible participants in the US depending on the type of device, extended warranties on all replacement devices, and an additional cash award if they return the recalled device to Philips Respironics. The settlement will further compensate certain individuals who acquired replacement devices post-recall.
The final cost of the settlement may vary based on, among other things, how many patients participate in the settlement and what the Court awards for the professional fees relating to the resolutions. Philips Respironics has recorded a provision for an amount of EUR 575 million in the first quarter of 2023 to cover for the estimated costs of the final settlement.
Subject to final Court approval, payments to class members under the settlement are not expected to begin until the first quarter of 2024 at the earliest.

VALUE-BASED PRIMARY CARE NETWORK FROM FLORIDA BLUE AND ALEDADE SHOWS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH CARE QUALITY IMPROVEMENTS
In first two years, practices improved care for over 41,000 patients, resulting in nearly $14 million in shared savings.
SEPTEMBER 7, 2023 — Florida Blue, the state’s Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, and Aledade, the largest network of independent primary care providers in the country, today announced that their collaboration on a value-based care network in Florida helped improve the quality of care and patient outcomes for tens of thousands of commercially-insured members over two years of partnership. Led by Florida physicians, the collaboration resulted in nearly $14 million in shared savings earned by this network of nearly 60 primary care practices, federally qualified health centers, rural health clinics and multi-specialty clinics.
Value-based care networks, or Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), are groups of providers that share financial responsibility for delivering high-quality, better-coordinated patient care. Results from the Aledade-Florida Blue ACO show the 59 primary care practices that participated in 2022 outperformed the market in rates of control of diabetes, as well as screening rates for breast cancer, colorectal cancer and cervical cancer. The practices also increased their rates of patient outreach through workflow management powered by the Aledade App, connecting with 3 out of every 4 patients following an inpatient visit. This follow-up is a critical way to enhance the relationship between these practices and the more than 41,000 patients served under this collaboration.
Additionally, between year one and year two, these practices reduced hospitalizations by twice as much as other practices in their region (a 15 percent reduction compared to 7 percent) and visits to the Emergency Department (a 1.8 percent reduction compared to 0.8 percent).

CLINICAL TRIAL SHOWS DRUG DEVELOPED TO TREAT UNCONTROLLED HYPERTENSION SIGNIFICANTLY LOWERS BLOOD PRESSURE
Lorundrostat studied in 200 patients
SEPTEMBER 10. 2023 – Findings from a clinical trial led by a Cleveland Clinic cardiologist showed that lorundrostat – a new type of blood pressure medication — safely decreased blood pressure in patients with uncontrolled hypertension.
Findings were presented today during a late breaking science session at the American Heart Association’s annual Hypertension Scientific Sessions in Boston and simultaneously published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is when the force of blood pushing against your artery walls is consistently too high. This damages your arteries over time and can lead to serious complications like heart attack or stroke. Uncontrolled or resistant hypertension is when your blood pressure remains high or unmanaged, despite taking medications. People with hard-to-treat, resistant hypertension have an even higher risk of stroke, kidney disease and heart failure than those whose high blood pressure is regulated.
Lorundrostat was developed to address abnormally elevated aldosterone, a hormone your adrenal glands release that regulates blood pressure by managing the levels of sodium and potassium in your blood. Aldosterone synthase inhibitors are a novel class of blood pressure-lowering medication that decrease the body’s production of aldosterone. Medicines currently available for patients block the receptor for aldosterone, but aldosterone can still be circulating and have a negative impact on patients. Up to 25 percent of all people with hypertension exhibit abnormal aldosterone levels.

MAYO CLINIC STUDY REVEALS PROTON BEAM THERAPY MAY SHORTEN BREAST CANCER TREATMENT
SEPTEMEBR 9, 2023 – In a randomized trial, published in The Lancet Oncology, Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers uncover evidence supporting a shorter treatment time for breast cancer patients. The study compared two separate dosing schedules of pencil-beam scanning proton therapy, the most advanced type of proton therapy known for its precision in targeting cancer cells while preserving healthy tissue to reduce the risk of side effects.
Survival rates for breast cancer continue to improve due to advances in diagnosis and treatment, leading to increasing emphasis on reducing the long-term toxicity of cancer treatment, including radiotherapy.
Prior to this study, all patients treated with proton postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) had received a conventional 25- to 30-day course delivered five days per week over five to six weeks. The researchers hoped to demonstrate that condensing the course of proton beam therapy, a form of particle therapy that could spare the heart and lungs from radiation damage, may result in a similar side effect profile.

CMA AND AMA URGE COURT TO PROTECT PATIENT SAFETY AND UPHOLD LONG-STANDING PROHIBITION AGAINST NON-PHYSICIANS’ USE OF “DOCTOR” TITLE
September 7, 2023 – Sacramento – The California Medical Association (CMA) and the American Medical Association (AMA) have filed a joint amicus curiae brief in support of California’s long-standing law that prohibits the use of the term “doctor” or the prefix “Dr.” by anyone other than California-licensed allopathic and osteopathic physicians.
In this case, Palmer v. Bonta, et. al., three nurse practitioners with Doctorate of Nursing degrees are suing state officials to block California Business and Professions Code section 2054, so the nurses can call themselves doctors. The nurses claim they are not misleading patients because they use “doctor” and the title “Dr.” in conjunction with their nursing degrees. Such usage, they admit, is not permitted under the law. The lawsuit seeks to invalidate the law on the basis that it violates the nurses’ First Amendment speech rights.
In the brief, CMA and AMA emphasized that courts have repeatedly found a legitimate government interest in California’s 86-year-old statutory rule designed to protect Californians who interface with the health care delivery system.
“[The] courts have consistently relied upon a readily discernible goal of the Legislature to prevent confusion and potential harm to members of the public who may be misled into believing they are dealing with physicians whenever those terms are used by non-physicians,” the brief said. “The original purpose of [this law] remains as relevant and vital today as in 1937 when [it] was enacted.”
Physicians are educated and trained differently and more deeply and robustly than any other professional health care practitioner; and industry practice and the law continue to place physicians at the center of medical care. As it was in the early part of the last century, the public continues to view physicians as the pillar of health care and closely associates the term “doctor” or “Dr.” with physicians and surgeons.

AMA RELEASES THE CPT 2024 CODE SET
Consumer-friendly Spanish language descriptors of medical procedures and services added to code set
SEPTEMBER 8, 2023 – To bridge language barriers and make health care more inclusive and transparent for patients who speak Spanish, the American Medical Association (AMA) now offers Spanish language descriptors for more than 11,000 medical procedures and services. The consumer-friendly descriptors in Spanish were added to the newly released Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) 2024 code set, the nation’s leading data-sharing terminology for medical procedures and services.
The consumer-friendly descriptors are an important resource that many hospitals, health plans, medical offices and other CPT users already incorporate into English-language medical documents, insurance forms, price sheets, and patient portals. Including CPT consumer-friendly descriptors in Spanish that are clear and straightforward will help CPT users better engage and assist many in the Latinx community.
“Navigating medical care and paperwork can be especially challenging for Latinx patients who do not speak English or speak English as a second language,” said AMA Senior Vice President of Health Solutions Lori Prestesater. “Providing approximately 41 million Spanish speaking individuals in the United States with an easy-to-understand description of medical procedures and services can help build a more inclusive health care environment, where language is no longer a barrier and patients can actively engage in their own care.”
