| Gregg and Lori Gottsegen Make $1 Million Gift to Keeping The Promise Capital Campaign
May 19, 2025 – Gregg and Lori Gottsegen recently made a generous $1 million gift to Keeping the Promise…The Campaign for Boca Raton Regional Hospital. This gift will name the second-floor reception area in the Toby and Leon Cooperman Medical Arts Pavilion.
Although the Gottsegens have only been full-time residents of Boca Raton since 2020, their history goes back more than ten years. Having family in the Boca area brought Gregg and Lori down to South Florida on a part-time basis. However, they were long-time residents of Livingston, NJ, where they raised their family and were very involved with the community. Gregg proudly sits on the board of Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, which is located in Livingston.
The Gottsegens have come to know the Toby and Leon Cooperman personally, making their most recent gift to Boca Raton Regional Hospital, part of Baptist Health, even more meaningful. Toby and Leon have been strong supporters of the hospital for many years, helping to develop remarkable clinical services that will enhance the health and well-being of South Florida residents. As Gregg explains, “Lori and I have a deep respect and admiration for the philanthropic life that Toby and Leon lead. Their generosity has changed the lives of countless people and is truly something we admire.”
“Receiving a gift from active community members like the Gottsegens is so impactful,” says Lincoln Mendez, North Region Executive, Baptist Health and CEO of Boca Raton Regional Hospital.

BROWARD HEALTH HONORS TRAUMA SURVIVORS
National Trauma Survivor’s Day
May 21, 2025 – In observance of National Trauma Survivors Day, Broward Health hosted a heartfelt celebration to honor trauma patients, emergency medical teams and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) partners.
“It’s very gratifying to see trauma patients back,” said Dr. Ivan Puente, medical director of trauma services and critical care at Broward Health. “Watching patients return, not as victims but as survivors, is a powerful testament to both their strength and the collective effort of everyone who has been part of their healing journey.”
Among those honored was trauma survivor Michael Ross, a Fort Lauderdale resident, who shared his story of resilience. Ross was involved in a motor vehicle accident on April 24, 2022, which resulted in a cervical spine injury, leaving him temporarily quadriplegic. Doctors initially believed he would never walk again, but Ross now walks and drives independently. He referred to himself as a “miracle survivor” in his emotional speech.
Ashley Fyfe, who survived a car crash on June 25, 2022, which resulted in the loss of her dominant right arm, also shared her powerful story. During her nine-day stay at Broward Health North, she received exceptional care from nurses, whom she praises as extraordinary. Despite the life-changing injury, Fyfe emerged stronger, symbolized by the word “unstoppable” tattooed on her arm. Today, she volunteers with the Girl Scouts, inspiring others with her story of perseverance.

Cleveland Clinic Receives $5 Million Grant to Lead Biorepository Coordinating Center for Cystic Fibrosis Lung Transplant Consortium
Grant renewal from Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will further efforts to study common complications of lung transplantation and improve outcomes for patients
May 21, 2025 – Cleveland Clinic has been awarded a $5 million grant from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to continue its role as the Biorepository Coordinating Center for the Cystic Fibrosis Lung Transplant Consortium until 2030. The coordinating center provides the infrastructure to support research to improve understanding of the factors that affect lung transplant outcomes.
The initiative, which includes 15 participating institutions in North America, is led by Maryam Valapour, M.D., M.P.P., director of Lung Transplant Outcomes at Cleveland Clinic, and Suzy Comhair, Ph.D., scientific director of Cleveland Clinic’s Biorepository and associate professor in the department of inflammation and immunity.
Since its inception, the center has led this prospective, longitudinal study of lung transplant recipients. The study collects biological specimens and clinical data at key milestones following transplantation, with all data linked to the Cystic Fibrosis Lung Transplant Consortium registry.
The ongoing effort enables future research studies to access these biospecimens and data to investigate the causes of and potential treatments for Chronic Lung Allograft Dysfunction (CLAD). This serious and common complication is the primary cause of lung failure and mortality after lung transplantation.

Cleveland Clinic Children’s Among First Hospitals to Use Novel Gene Therapy to Treat Inherited Blood Disorders
Thalassemia is a blood disorder that affects the body’s ability to produce healthy red blood cells
May 20, 2025 – Cleveland Clinic Children’s is among the first in the country to administer a new gene therapy to modify a patient’s blood-forming stem cells in patients with thalassemia. The one-time treatment can reduce or eliminate the need for ongoing blood transfusions.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration expanded its approval for Casgevy (exagamglogene autotemcel) in January to treat beta thalassemia, in addition to sickle cell disease. The innovative treatment uses a gene editing technology called CRISPR/Cas9 to modify a patient’s own stem cells. The edited cells are then transplanted back into the patient, where they produce more hemoglobin in new healthy red blood cells.
The FDA’s approval was based on results from a single arm trial, which showed 91% of patients with beta thalassemia did not need a blood transfusion for at least a year after having the treatment.
“This is the latest game-changing gene therapy in blood disorders that will hopefully greatly improve these patients’ quality of life,” said Rabi Hanna, M.D., chairman of the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology department at Cleveland Clinic Children’s. “Oftentimes patients have side effects of their frequent blood transfusions which can lead to organ complications such as liver or heart failure from the severe iron overload. It’s my hope this innovative treatment leads to a significantly better and healthier life for this patient population.”

NCH First in Southwest Florida to Offer Laser Procedure for Treating Airway Tumors
May 19, 2025 – Naples Comprehensive Health (NCH) has become the first healthcare provider in Southwest Florida to offer Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), an advanced laser treatment for patients with specific forms of lung and airway tumors. This procedure which uses existing technology in a novel way, is a game-changer for patients with limited treatment options.
PDT is a highly targeted treatment that uses a photosensitizing drug called Photofrin® and a specialized laser to destroy cancerous tissue in the airways while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. After the medication is absorbed by the tumor, a controlled dose of laser light activates it, triggering a reaction that destroys the cancer cells. Healthy tissue, though photosensitized, is unaffected by the light exposure.
Though this laser technology has been around for some time, the innovative use of it at NCH within the field of pulmonary oncology is new and unique. It is being used as both a curative treatment for certain localized non-small cell lung cancers confined to the airway, and as a palliative treatment for relieving airway obstruction caused by tumor growth, which often leads to post-obstructive pneumonia. In these cases, PDT restores airway patency and improves patient comfort and breathing.

HSS Achieves 100% Success Rate for Sedation-Free Pediatric MRIs
May 21, 2025 – A study from Lerner Children’s Pavilion at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) of nearly 2,000 children showed that pediatric MRIs were completed with a 0% sedation rate through the support of certified child life specialists (CCLS). The findings, which highlight how this innovative and noninvasive approach eliminated the need for sedation while improving care for young patients, were presented at the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) Annual Meeting.
Challenges of Pediatric MRIs
A typical MRI is not only loud and confining but also very sensitive to motion, requiring subjects to lie still during the 20- to 80-minute procedure, which is a major challenge for pediatric patients. Consequently, sedation is used in up to 28% of pediatric MRIs, and reports show this number is increasing.
While sedation can facilitate successful imaging—and is considered relatively safe—relying on this strategy for young MRI patients poses potential risks, including cardiopulmonary issues and allergic reactions. Additionally, the combination of MRIs and sedation can cause anxiety for children and their parents and prolong recovery.

Mayo Clinic discovery could mean better access to more donor hearts and improved transplant outcomes
May 19, 2025 – A new discovery by Mayo Clinic researchers could mean more donor hearts are available for heart transplant, giving more people a second chance at life.
In findings published in Nature Cardiovascular Research, a team led by Mayo Clinic cardiac surgeon Paul Tang, M.D., Ph.D., identified a biological process that contributes to donor heart injury during cold storage. The researchers found that a drug already used to treat heart conditions can prevent this damage.
Heart transplantation is the most effective treatment for end-stage heart failure, yet fewer than half of donor hearts are ultimately used. One major reason is the relatively short window for transplanting a donated heart into a patient, due to concerns over low donor heart function that comes from leaving a heart in cold storage too long.

Mayo Clinic researchers develop first salivary gland regenerative biobank to combat chronic dry mouth
May 21, 2025 – Millions of people are affected by chronic dry mouth, or xerostomia, an agonizing side effect of damaged salivary glands. While chemotherapy and radiation treatment for head and neck cancer are the most common causes of this, aging, certain medications and other factors, including diabetes, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and HIV/AIDS, can also cause chronic dry mouth. Currently, there is no cure for it.
Mayo Clinic researchers have established the world’s first biobank of human salivary gland tissue-organoids that opens the door to research to find a cure.
“This unique biobank resource overcomes a major barrier we’ve faced in the field, namely: limited access to standardized salivary specimens suited for salivary gland regeneration research. This collection provides a foundation for regenerative therapy development, especially for radiation-induced chronic dry mouth,” says Nagarajan Kannan, Ph.D., lead author of the study published in NPJ Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Kannan is also the director of the Mayo Clinic Stem Cell and Cancer Biology Laboratory.

NIH researchers develop biomarker score for predicting diets high in ultra-processed foods
Poly-metabolite scores could reduce reliance on self-reported dietary data in large population studies.
May 20, 2025 – For the first time, researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) identified patterns of metabolites in blood and urine that can be used as an objective measure of an individual’s consumption of energy from ultra-processed foods. Metabolites are left after the body converts food into energy, a process known as metabolism. Scientists used these data to develop a score based on multiple metabolites, known as a poly-metabolite score, that has the potential to reduce the reliance on, or complement the use of, self-reported dietary data in large population studies. The findings appeared May 20, 2025, in PLOS Medicine.
“Limitations of self-reported diet are well known. Metabolomics provides an exciting opportunity to not only improve our methods for objectively measuring complex exposures like diet and intake of ultra-processed foods, but also to understand the mechanisms by which diet might be impacting health,” said lead investigator Erikka Loftfield, Ph.D., M.P.H., of NIH’s National Cancer Institute.

Health Foundation of South Florida Announces 2025 Black Health Summit In Action
Black Health Summit In Action advances community priorities through grassroots leadership and strategic investment
April 30, 2025 – As National Minority Health Month draws to a close, the Health Foundation of South Florida is proud to announce Black Health Summit In Action – highlighting the momentum and community vision of past Black Health Summits.
2025 marks a turning point: bringing the Summit’s mission beyond the stage and directly into the communities where real-time challenges are being met with responses. By centering grassroots leadership and community-designed solutions, Black Health Summit In Action puts health equity into motion—on the ground, in partnership, and with lasting impact.
This year’s work is a direct response to the community-identified priorities, specifically the need for greater access to quality health care, affordable housing, community safety, and culturally responsive outreach. In past Summits, residents and grassroots leaders made clear that health equity cannot be achieved without addressing the conditions that shape daily life—where people live, how they access care, and whether systems reflect their realities.
