| ACHE OF SOUTH FLORIDA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: DIONNE BLACKWOOD
Dionne Blackwood, FACHE of Memorial Healthcare System, began her 30-plus-year career in healthcare in IT, moved into finance and more than 20 years in leadership. It wasn’t until she went to Jackson Health System that she found that her passion was not in finance, but in using her experience in finance to provide patients with access to healthcare resources.
As she explained, “I was able to use my experience in finance to enter Jackson Health System and advance my career where I was an administrator for mental health and community services.”
Dionne’s passion is her current position as Vice President, Memorial Primary Care and Ambulatory Services, in which – among other responsibilities – she oversees 15 primary care practices, OBGYN, Podiatry, Sickle Cell Medical Home, and three Urgent Care Centers. She points out, “It’s not just primary care; I’m responsible for the health of the community.” She went on to say, “We are so successful because of our focus on the whole person, not just when we see our patients in the office.” She is very proud of the value-based care program that allows access to all in the South Broward Community. In her spare time, she volunteers as the Vice Chair of the Memorial Financial Credit Union and is a Member of the Broward County Homeless Continuum of Care.
Along with her passion in healthcare, Dionne is proud about being a member of ACHE (American College of Healthcare Executives) South Florida Chapter. She has been a member for more than 20 years, but admitted that when she joined, “It was the only professional, and most prestigious, organization in healthcare. I maintained my membership throughout the years as I knew one day I was going to become a Fellow.”

UPDATED NEWS INFORMATION FROM THE LAST FOUR DAYS IN SOUTH FLORIDA |
BROWARD HEALTH CANCER PATIENT BEATS MALIGNANT MELANOMA
May 29, 2024 – During Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Lloyd Bent, a 77-year-old patient at Broward Health, reflected on his recent battle with skin cancer. The seasoned insurance professional was eager to share his story about the importance of being prepared for life’s unexpected challenges.
Bent’s story began in Jamaica when he noticed a small spot on his heel. Despite several visits to the doctor for further examination, a biopsy was never recommended. Bent relocated to South Florida and he began experiencing mobility setbacks and persistent upper leg pain.
“I thought I was just suffering from some sort of inflammation, but looking back, it may have been a sign that something more serious was going on with my body,” Bent said.
In March 2023, Bent’s wife noticed an alarming rupture on his heel. Without hesitation, they turned to Broward Health North, in Deerfield Beach, where his journey toward healing began. After a biopsy was done by Rishad Ahmed, M.D., DPM, a podiatrist at Broward Health, it was revealed that Bent had melanoma, deeply embedded within his heel.
Lloyd was immediately referred to Mehmet Hepgur, M.D., a hematologist-oncologist, and to Alia Abdulla, M.D., D.O., a surgical oncologist, both with the Broward Health Physician Group. The doctors worked together to create a comprehensive plan, guided by their expertise. Bent underwent a melanoma resection procedure in June 2023 to eradicate the cancer.

STUDY: ACCESS TO TARGETED LUNG CANCER DRUG IS COST-PROHIBITIVE GLOBALLY
Sylvester Cancer study on immunotherapy drug durvalumab shows limited access globally due to cost constraints
May 30, 2024– Many countries with national healthcare systems or payers such as insurance companies use cost-effectiveness analyses to decide whether to cover new medicines, balancing treatment costs with potential health benefits.
That strategy often limits access to new, targeted therapies, even when these drugs prove highly effective and become part of standard-of-care therapy for many patients.
A new study from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine examined the cost-effectiveness of durvalumab, a targeted immunotherapy for lung cancer that is known to extend lifespan. The findings show that the drug exceeded official cost-effectiveness thresholds for all four analyzed countries: the United States, Brazil, Singapore and Spain.

‘CAR SEATS THAT CARE’
Falcon Cove Middle School Students Aid Patients and Families at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – MAY 30, 2024– National Junior Honor Society students at Falcon Cove Middle School in Weston have been busy selling Domino’s coupon cards, but it’s not because they’re hungry for pizza.
Students used the discount cards to fuel a fundraising campaign for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. Their efforts resulted in a $5,000 donation that will be used to purchase car seats for needy families that wouldn’t otherwise have a safe way to transport small children.
“We see lots of children that come that are injured and their families don’t have an age-appropriate car seat installed, either because they don’t have the financial resources or the knowledge of their importance,” said Dr. Oliver Lao, medical director for pediatric trauma at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “It can be a vicious cycle when kids don’t have a car seat to keep them safe after being discharged from the hospital and injuries keep happening.”
Dr. Lao, whose daughter, Isabella, is the president of the National Junior Honor Society at Falcon Cove, says it’s the goal of the “Car Seats that Care” program that every child leaves the children’s hospital in a properly-fitted, properly installed car seat.

trauma-related injuries in the county has doubled over the past 12 years, and these injuries can often be prevented.
“Some factors that might contribute to the sharp increase of traumatic injuries include the county’s population growth, an aging population, as well as increased engagement in high-risk activities, such as the use of electric bikes and scooters and underage golf cart driving,” said Dr. Belma Andric, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for the Health Care District of Palm Beach County. “In the trauma field, it’s often said people end up in trauma centers due to velocity, gravity, or poor judgment, factors that are often in our control.”

NOVEL VACCINE CONCEPT GENERATES IMMUNE RESPONSES THAT COULD PRODUCE MULTIPLE TYPES OF HIV BROADLY NEUTRALIZING ANTIBODIES
NIH-funded animal model results will inform vaccine development in humans.
May 30, 2024 – Using a combination of cutting-edge immunologic technologies, researchers have successfully stimulated animals’ immune systems to induce rare precursor B cells of a class of HIV broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs). The findings, published today in Nature Immunology, are an encouraging, incremental step in developing a preventive HIV vaccine.
HIV is genetically diverse making the virus difficult to target with a vaccine, but bNAbs may overcome that hurdle because they bind to parts of the virus that remain constant even when it mutates. Germline targeting is an immune system-stimulating approach that guides naïve (precursor) B cells to develop into mature B cells that can produce bNAbs. A class of bNAbs called 10E8 is a priority for HIV vaccine development because it neutralizes a particularly broad range of HIV variants.

EXISTING DRUG SHOWS PROMISE AS TREATMENT FOR RARE GENETIC DISORDER
NIH researchers find new pathways towards treatment for autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 1.
May 30, 2024 – A drug approved to treat certain autoimmune diseases and cancers successfully alleviated symptoms of a rare genetic syndrome called autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 1 (APS-1). Researchers identified the treatment based on their discovery that the syndrome is linked to elevated levels of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), a protein involved in immune system responses, providing new insights into the role of IFN-gamma in autoimmunity. The study, led by researchers at the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.

IMPLICATIONS FOR CANNABIS INVESTING AS A HIGHLY CAPITAL INTENSIVE BUSINESS
The Viridian Chart of the Week on 8/27/23 demonstrated that cannabis is more capital-intensive than tobacco, alcohol, pharmaceuticals, or general consumer products. Cannabis measured 1.67x capital/sales. The industry has managed to reduce capital intensity slightly since then, and the group now measures 1.54x capital/sales.
The high capital intensity has severe implications for internally fundable growth. If, on average, it takes $1.54 of extra capital to get $1 of additional sales, with 30% EBITDA margins and high 280e taxes, it is clear that growth requires external financing. S3 will help but not eliminate this issue.
