STUDY DETECTS COGNITIVE CHANGES IN OLDER DRIVERS USING IN-VEHICLE SENSORS
Researchers are gauging abnormal driving such as getting lost, ignoring traffic signals and signs, near-collision events as well as travel patterns such as number of trips, miles on the highway, and driving in severe weather.
FAU Project Provides First Step Toward Widespread Use of Low-cost, Early Warning System
BOCA RATON, Fla. – February 29, 2024 – An estimated 4 to 8 million older adults with mild cognitive impairment are currently driving in the United States, and one-third of them will develop dementia within five years. Individuals with progressive dementias are eventually unable to drive safely, yet many remain unaware of their cognitive decline.
Currently, screening and evaluation services for driving can only test a small number of individuals with cognitive concerns, missing many who need to know if they require treatment.
Nursing, engineering and neuropsychology researchers at Florida Atlantic University are testing and evaluating a readily and rapidly available, unobtrusive in-vehicle sensing system they have developed.

CLEVELAND CLINIC RESEARCHERS UNCOVER HOW VIRUS CAUSES CANCER, POINT TO POTENTIAL TREATMENT
Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus activates a specific pathway to drive viral persistent infection and cell growth, paving the way for tumors to form March 1, 2024 – Port St. Lucie, Fla: Cleveland Clinic researchers have discovered a key mechanism used by Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), also known as human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8), to induce cancer. The research points to effective new treatment options for KSHV-associated cancers, including Kaposi’s sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma, and HHV8-associated multicentric Castleman disease.
“Our findings have significant implications: viruses cause between 10% to 20% of cancers worldwide, a number that is constantly increasing as new discoveries are made. Treating virus-induced cancers with standard cancer therapies can help shrink tumors that are already there, but it doesn’t fix the underlying problem of the virus,” said Jun Zhao, Ph.D., of Cleveland Clinic Florida Research & Innovation Center. “Understanding how pathogens transform a healthy cell into a cancer cell uncovers exploitable vulnerabilities and allows us to make and repurpose existing drugs that can effectively treat virus-associated malignancies.”

The AED sensed a shockable rhythm and discharged as the Code Blue Team came on the scene.
The Pompano Beach resident was then taken to the Emergency room and later brought to the Cardiac Cath Lab where he received life-saving bypass surgery. After several months of recovery and rehab, he came back to work and will now be retiring today after 38 years of working for Broward Health.

CLEVELAND CLINIC AMONG FIRST HOSPITALS TO PERFORM NEW TISSUE-SPARING ABLATION PROCEDURE
February 29, 2024- Following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s approval last month, Cleveland Clinic was one of the first health systems to use pulsed field ablation (PFA) technology to treat several patients successfully.
During a traditional ablation procedure, a catheter is guided to the interior of the heart and extreme temperatures destroy areas associated with abnormal heart rhythms. This can lead to injury of surrounding structures. PFA relies on tissue-selective, non-thermal electric fields to ablate heart tissue avoiding such injury.
The FDA approval follows data from the ADVENT and PULSED AF clinical trials, in which Cleveland Clinic was a participant. Results showed the therapy was as safe and effective as conventional thermal ablation. This new ablation technology is an alternative for patients with symptomatic atrial fibrillation (Afib).

NEW ANTIBODIES TARGET “DARK SIDE” OF INFLUENZA VIRUS PROTEIN
NIH researchers explore hidden, vulnerable region of influenza neuraminidase.
March 1, 2024 – Researchers at the National Institutes of Health have identified antibodies targeting a hard-to-spot region of the influenza virus, shedding light on the relatively unexplored “dark side” of the neuraminidase (NA) protein head. The antibodies target a region of the NA protein that is common among many influenza viruses, including H3N2 subtype viruses, and could be a new target for countermeasures. The research, led by scientists at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ Vaccine Research Center, part of NIH, was published today in Immunity.
Influenza, or flu, sickens millions of people across the globe each year and can lead to severe illness and death. While vaccination against influenza reduces the burden of the disease, updated vaccines are needed each season to provide protection against the many strains and subtypes of the rapidly evolving virus. Vaccines that provide protection against a broad range of influenza viruses could prevent outbreaks of new and reemerging flu viruses without the need for yearly vaccine reformulation or vaccinations.
