HOLTZ CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL IS DESIGNATED LEVEL IV NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT BY THE STATE OF FLORIDA

Cutting-edge research, technology, and care advances NICU to new levels

June 6, 2023 – The Schatzi and Stanley Kassal Project: Newborn Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Holtz Children’s Hospital at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center became a Level IV NICU, as designated by the state of Florida. As one of only five pediatric hospitals to achieve this designation in the region, Holtz Children’s is the largest Level IV NICU in the state, with 126 patient beds.

A Level IV designation is the highest level a NICU can achieve, meaning Holtz Children’s must meet all capabilities of a Level III NICU, and be able to care for infants born earlier than 32 weeks gestation and weighing less than 1,500 grams. Other criteria includes around-the-clock medical and surgical care, life support, and advanced imaging.

“The ability to care for the most critically ill and vulnerable patients in our neonatal intensive care unit has always been one of our top priorities,” said Joanne Ruggiero, senior vice president and chief executive officer of Holtz Children’s and The Women’s Hospital at Jackson Memorial. “We strive to continue implementing the most advanced technologies to ensure we give our little miracles the healthies start to life possible, with access to care that is as complex as they are.”

AN UNEXPECTED VOYAGE TO STROKE RECOVERY

By: Erin Moriarty Wade

When Sam Billings left Arkansas for a 9-day cruise around the Caribbean, he never imagined he’d be gone for 6 weeks recovering from a massive stroke far away from home.

Sam, 62, and his wife Julie, were enjoying a relaxing trip and were headed to their final destination on the cruise, an idyllic private island owned by the cruise line, when Sam suffered a stroke.

“I had spent the day snorkeling at St. Thomas, and we set sail that evening to spend that night and the full next day at sea,” Sam recalls. “I got up to use the restroom, and I fell down between the bed and wall and I couldn’t get up or even lift my arm.”

Julie came to help him and quickly recognized he was having a stroke. She called for the cruise ship’s medical team, and they took him to the infirmary. By now, they were at least 5 hours from shore in the middle of the ocean.

CLEVELAND CLINIC RESEARCH SUGGESTS METABOLITE DIFFERENCES IN YOUNG-ONSET VERSUS AVERAGE-ONSET COLORECTAL CANCER

Results pave way for future studies, as number of people younger than 50 with the disease increases

June 3, 2023 – New research from Cleveland Clinic supports the theory that environmental exposures – such as red meat consumption and sugar intake – may play a role in the rising incidence of young-onset colorectal cancer.

Researchers found that people younger than age 50 with colorectal cancer had lower levels of citrate, which is created in the process of converting food into energy, compared to older people diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

The study also showed key differences in protein and carbohydrate metabolism that could suggest that red meat consumption and sugar intake are potential factors for causing colorectal cancer at a younger age.

Cleveland Clinic researchers shared study results in a presentation at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting June 3, 2023.

BE HEART-SMART TO STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY DURING AND AFTER NATURAL DISASTERS

Be heart-smart to stay safe and healthy during and after natural disasters

The American Heart Association has important tips to prepare for hurricanes and other natural disasters that can negatively impact physical and mental health

June 5, 2023 — June is the start of hurricane season in the U.S., and as you’re making your emergency preparedness checklist, the American Heart Association cautions that it’s also important to protect your heart and overall health in the wake of a hurricane or other natural disaster.

Scientific research shows it’s not only physical devastation that impacts the health and safety of people in the path of a hurricane or other natural disaster.

In a small study presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health 2021 Scientific Sessions, researchers found that among people who survived Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico in 2017, there were higher rates of high blood pressure, obesity and pre-diabetes, as well as increased incidences of heart disease and stroke two years after the storm compared to two years prior to the hurricane.

June 5, 2023 — Lee Health’s Cape Coral Hospital has been named a Level II maternal care verified facility by The Joint Commission’s Maternal Levels of Care (MLC) verification program, in collaboration with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). The MLC Verification program provides an objective assessment of a facility’s capabilities and verifies that a hospital has the expertise, equipment and resources in place for a patient’s specific needs and risk level. When complications arise, verification also confirms that hospitals have agreements in place so the mother can be transferred to a higher-level facility with the appropriate level of care.
