Sarasota Memorial Surgeon Performs World’s First Heart Procedure Combining Two Emerging Technologies Oct. 13, 2026 – Sarasota Memorial Hospital heart surgeon Jonathan Hoffberger, DO, has performed the world’s first heart procedure combining two new cardiac implants from Edwards Lifesciences to replace a failing tricuspid valve and reduce stroke risk associated with atrial fibrillation (Afib).
According to Edwards Lifesciences, the milestone procedure marks the first time its TRIFORMIS RESILIA tricuspid valve and ECLIPTIS left atrial appendage (LAA) exclusion system have been implanted together in the same patient anywhere in the world.
“Patients who need heart valve surgery often have other cardiovascular conditions that increase their risk of complications,” said Dr. Hoffberger, chief of cardiovascular surgery at SMH. “By combining these two devices in a single operation, we were able to replace a diseased heart valve while also addressing a significant source of stroke risk, without requiring separate surgeries.”
The two new devices address separate but potentially serious heart conditions. The TRIFORMIS RESILIA, approved by the FDA in May 2026, is the first and only surgical implant designed specifically for replacing native or prosthetic heart valves. Surgeons previously used mitral valves for tricuspid valve replacement because there were no surgical replacement tricuspid valves approved for use. Unlike the other valves, the TRIFORMIS RESILIA is engineered to accommodate the unique anatomy of the tricuspid valve. It also incorporates advanced tissue technology designed to resist calcium buildup, a major contributor to deterioration of replacement heart valves.

Strong Patient Outcomes Earns Holy Cross Health High Performing Recognition in U.S. News & World Report’s 2026-2027 Best Hospitals Rankings Five High Performing ratings recognize care for heart failure, pacemaker implantation and orthopedic procedures
October 13, 2026 – Cardiovascular and orthopedic issues are two of the most common reasons patients seek hospital care. Holy Cross Health earned High Performing ratings for five conditions and procedures—heart failure, pacemaker implantation, hip fracture, hip replacement and knee replacement—in U.S. News & World Report’s 2026-2027 Best Hospitals rankings.
For most patients, health care isn’t defined by one specialty. It’s defined by confidence that they’ll receive high-quality care, regardless of why they walk through the door. Holy Cross Health’s five High Performing ratings reflect strong performance across a broad range of procedures and conditions, offering patients another independent measure to consider when choosing where to receive care.

BROWARD HEALTH MEDICAL CENTER INTRODUCES BISPECIFIC T-CELL ENGAGER THERAPY FOR CANCER PATIENTS October 13, 2026 – Broward Health Medical Center has introduced bispecific T-cell engager (BiTE) therapy, an innovative immunotherapy that harnesses the body’s immune system to target and destroy cancer cells. The FDA-approved therapy is used to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), lymphoma, multiple myeloma, lung cancer and melanoma. The first patient treated at Broward Health Medical Center on Oct. 12 received BiTE therapy for a specific type of lung cancer. Additional patients, including those with multiple myeloma, are expected to receive the therapy as appropriate.
“BiTE therapy represents an important advancement in cancer care because it brings the patient’s own immune system directly to the cancer cell,” said Dr. Blanc, M.D., medical director of hematology-oncology at Broward Health Medical Center. “By connecting T cells with specific targets on cancer cells, this therapy gives us another highly targeted treatment option for patients who may benefit from it.”

October 12 2026 – West Palm Beach, Fla. – Community members have just weeks left to double their investment in strengthening the local mental and behavioral workforce. Three-year grant from Simply Healthcare Foundation will connect children and families with timely, community-based mental health support
September 29, 2026 — Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation has received a $230,000 grant from Simply Healthcare Foundation to expand New Solutions: A Pediatric Mental Health Treatment and Suicide Prevention Program that helps children and families access timely mental health services outside of a traditional hospital setting.
The three-year grant, which began on July 1, will help New Solutions serve 267 individuals while addressing a critical gap between emergency psychiatric treatment and less acute, coordinated community-based care.

AHA report warns access to care is increasingly at risk in rural communities
October 13, 2026 – A new AHA report warns that access to care is increasingly at risk in rural communities as workforce shortages, financial pressures and policy changes threaten hospitals’ ability to maintain essential services.
The report finds that more than 46 million Americans rely on rural hospitals that are confronting longstanding challenges, including low patient volumes, geographic isolation and inadequate reimbursement, while also facing significant Medicaid reductions, the expiration of enhanced premium tax credits and growing pressures associated with Medicare Advantage. More than 40% of rural hospitals operate at a financial loss, and since 2010, more than 150 rural hospitals have closed or converted, reducing access to care for many patients, according to data highlighted in the report.
