BROWARD HEALTH NORTH UNVEILS DEDICATED EMERGENCY ROOM CT SCANNER AND X-RAY MACHINE
The Broward Health North team cuts the ribbon on the new CT scanner and X-ray machine
The new equipment will be permanently hosted inside the emergency room, enabling faster, more efficient care for patients.
AUGUST 14, 2026– – Broward Health North unveiled a major investment in emergency care with a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating new CT scan and X-ray equipment located directly inside the emergency room. The new imaging technology is just steps from ER triage, allowing patients to receive critical scans quickly without leaving the ER to go to the hospital’s imaging center. The event was celebrated by Broward Health leadership and physicians, Broward Sheriff’s Office personnel, construction and design teams and local EMS agencies from Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach and Lighthouse Point.
“This new ER imaging suite represents a major investment in the patients and community we serve,” said Matthew K. Garner, CEO of Broward Health North. “Having this equipment directly in the ER, right where our EMS partners bring critical patients, allows us to deliver even faster, more precise care in the moments that matter most.”

| HCA Florida Healthcare announce plans to build Cape Coral Hospital
The new hospital will expand access to the City of Cape Coral and surrounding communities.
August 14, 2026 – Cape Coral, FL — HCA Florida Healthcare and the City of Cape Coral today announced plans to build HCA Florida Cape Coral Hospital, a new full-service hospital that will expand access to high-quality healthcare services for residents of Cape Coral and surrounding communities.
The planned hospital will be located at 322 SW Pine Island Road, where HCA Florida Cape Coral Emergency currently operates. The project will expand the existing emergency care site into a hospital with inpatient and outpatient services to bring care closer to home.
The project represents an estimated $300 million investment in Cape Coral. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the hospital anticipated to open in 2029. Once complete, the new facility will be the 19th hospital in HCA Healthcare West Florida Division.
“Building HCA Florida Cape Coral Hospital is an important step in HCA Florida Healthcare’s broader strategy to expand access to care in Lee County,” said Jyric Sims, Ph.D., president of HCA Healthcare West Florida Division. “With our acquisition of HCA Florida Lehigh Hospital, the opening of HCA Florida West Fort Myers Emergency and the construction of HCA Florida Alico Emergency, planned to open in late 2026, we are building a more connected network to meet the growing healthcare needs of the region.

August 13, 2026 – Delray Medical Center and vascular surgeon, Dr. Joseph Ricotta, are the first hospital and physician in South Florida to use the SEISMIQ™ Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) system from Boston Scientific, a therapy that supports physicians in treating patients with complex calcified peripheral artery disease (PAD).
PAD is a common circulatory condition in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the limbs, most often in the legs. In many advanced cases, plaque buildup in the arteries becomes calcified, making the arteries stiff and harder to treat with traditional tools. These hardened calcium deposits can prevent balloons or stents from expanding properly, making procedures less effective and more difficult to perform.

Ehizele Osehobo, M.D., Joins Marcus Neuroscience Institute as an Endovascular Neurologist
August 13, 2026 – Board-certified and fellowship-trained endovascular neurologist Ehizele Osehobo, M.D., has joined Marcus Neuroscience Institute, part of Baptist Health Brain & Spine Care. Sarasota Memorial Celebrates Record-Breaking Births in July
August 14, 2026 – Sarasota Memorial’s Women & Children’s Services teams are celebrating a system record after welcoming 434 babies at its Sarasota campus in July — the most babies ever born in a single month at an SMH facility.
The record-setting month included 252 baby boys and 181 baby girls, with 12 sets of twins among them.
The SMH Women & Children’s Services teams provide compassionate, specialized care that supports families across the region, from pregnancy and delivery through newborn and pediatric care and beyond. So far in 2026, Sarasota Memorial has welcomed more than 3,000 babies into the world, including 47 sets of twins between its two hospital campuses.

Miller School of Medicine Researchers Identify Molecular Marker Linked to Faster Cognitive Decline in Alzheimer’s Disease

An abnormal RNA signature tied to TDP-43 dysfunction was associated with poorer cognitive performance and faster decline in people with Alzheimer’s disease, pointing to a potential new biomarker and therapeutic target.
A molecular abnormality known to contribute to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) may also help explain why some people with Alzheimer’s disease experience more severe memory loss and faster cognitive decline than others, according to new research led by Mercedes Prudencio, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Leonard Petrucelli, Ph.D., professor of neurology and founding director of the Miller School’s Neuroscience Institute, also contributed to the research.

Contrary to the old adage, there is something new under the sun after all — at least here in the United States. For the first time in 27 years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new active sunscreen ingredient for over-the-counter use.
It’s a chemical called bemotrizinol (“beh-moh-TRIZ-in-ol”), also referred to as BEMT, and it offers major advantages over presently available U.S. sunscreens, according to three Stanford Medicine dermatologists.

Here’s a situation scientist Katrin Svensson, PhD, never expected to find herself in: Molecules she discovered in the lab and tested (so far, only in mice) have shown up on internet-based company websites for anyone to purchase and use to inject themselves.
These molecules are naturally occurring peptides and they’re the latest wellness craze among certain sectors of the population.
But the craze is getting far ahead of the science in many ways, said Svensson, a Stanford Medicine associate professor of pathology. The peptides she’s discovered (including a new anti-obesity peptide, BRP) have not been tested in humans, a key first step between lab research, U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval and clinical use, let alone been manufactured in a regulated, safe process for humans. And while her discoveries aren’t yet the subject of viral social media reels, many other research-grade — i.e., not for-human-use-grade — peptides are.

Orlando Health Clinicians Invent Device to Improve Detection of Blood Loss in C-Sections
Aug. 3, 2026 – Orlando Health is rolling out the commercial use of the BleedID Vacuum Pad, a first of its kind, innovative medical device designed to improve the visualization of blood loss during obstetric and gynecological procedures, such as C-sections.
Orlando Health’s Dr. Neeraj Desai, maternal-fetal care physician, and Teresa Lance, clinical nurse specialist, worked for six years on developing the device. It is an absorbent, vacuum-assisted fluid collection device designed to be placed beneath the patient on a procedure or post-procedure table.
C-sections are one of the most common surgeries done in the United States, and accurate assessment of blood loss during childbirth remains a persistent clinical challenge. Often when vaginal bleeding occurs, it isn’t detected until blood pressure is affected or the clinicians see blood. BleedID will be able to much more quickly detect loss and allow for interventions and improved patient outcomes.

Encompass Health announces launch of private offering of 5.875% senior notes due 2034
August 10, 2026 — Encompass Health Corp. (NYSE: EHC) today announced it has commenced a private offering of an additional $100 million in aggregate principal amount of 5.875% senior notes maturing in 2034 (the “Additional Notes”), subject to market and other conditions. The Additional Notes will constitute a reopening of the Company’s 5.875% senior notes maturing in 2034 originally issued in May 2026 (the “Existing Notes”) and will be treated as the same class as, and will have the same terms (other than the date of issuance and the offering price) as, the Existing Notes. The Additional Notes will be jointly and severally guaranteed on a senior unsecured basis by all of the Company’s existing and future subsidiaries that guarantee borrowings under the Company’s credit agreement and other capital markets debt.
The Company intends to use the net proceeds from the offering of the Additional Notes, together with cash on hand, to repay outstanding amounts under the Company’s senior secured revolving credit facility.

Elevated use of cannabis, nicotine among U.S. adults continues into 2025
National survey suggests that use of alcohol, cigarettes, and other substances remains low.
August 12, 2026 – In 2025, adults in the United States reported using cannabis at or near record-high levels, continuing a long-term trend of increasing use. Nicotine vaping also remained high among young adults. These findings are based on the latest report from the Monitoring the Future (MTF) Longitudinal Panel Study, an annual examination of self-reported drug use in the U.S. among adults ages 19 to 65 supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since its inception in 1976.
The panel study, conducted by investigators at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, showed that increased levels of cannabis and nicotine vaping and pouch use coincided with historically low rates of cigarette smoking and a decline in alcohol consumption, continuing patterns seen in recent years. Some results bucked trends, however, such as a slight increase in self-reported heroin use among young adults aged 19 to 30, marking the first significant uptick and highest level in about 10 years.

American Hospital Association Leaders Join HHS Make Hospital Food Healthier Pledge
AUGUST 14, 2026 — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today announced that health systems represented by the past, current, and incoming chair of the American Hospital Association (AHA) have joined the Make Hospital Food Healthier Pledge, strengthening a nationwide effort to improve the quality of food served in America’s hospitals and reinforce the role of nutrition in patient care. Corewell Health in Michigan, Houston Methodist in Texas, and Sanford Health in South Dakota all signed onto the pledge.
“Hospitals cannot promote healing while serving food that contributes to chronic disease,” said HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “By joining this pledge, these health systems are putting nutrition where it belongs — at the center of patient care. We are working with hospitals across America to serve healthier food, improve patient health, and Make America Healthy Again.”

HHS Releases Report Exposing Fraudulent Insurance Coding For Sex-rejecting Procedures On Minors
August 13, 2026 — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today released a report Wolves in White Coats: How Doctors and Hospitals Pushed and Profited from the Fraud of “Gender Medicine,” a commissioned report examining insurance coding practices, perverse financial incentives, and the provision of sex-rejecting procedures for minors. Drawing on Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Guidance, Department of Justice (DOJ) investigations, peer-reviewed scientific literature, hospital records, whistleblower testimony, nationwide insurance claims analyses, and interviews with patients and parents, the report presents HHS’ findings and recommendations about the industry pushing and profiting off so-called “gender medicine.” A shortform documentary illustrating the report’s findings and highlighting the stories of victims of predatory gender medical practices was also released in conjunction with the report.
According to the report, more than 225 hospitals and health systems established pediatric gender programs nationwide. The report also analyzes nationwide claims data from 2015 through 2025 and identifies approximately $50 million in insurance claims for puberty blockers billed using endocrine disorder diagnostic code E34.9 (Endocrine Disorder, Unspecified). It further reports that nearly $11 million in claims for patients ages 13–17 were billed using a diagnosis code for precocious puberty E301 — findings the report says warrant additional review of insurance coding practices.

Promise Fund to Host Free ‘Mammography Screening Days’ in Palm Beach County in August
August 3, 2026 – Promise Fund, a South Florida-based nonprofit dedicated to increasing survivorship from breast and cervical cancer, will host free Mammography Screening Days on the following dates:
August 28, 2026 at Consulado de Guatemala, 1926 10th Ave N #104, Lake Worth Beach, FL, 33461 from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
This screening event is presented in partnership with Florida Mobile Mammography and Florida Health.
The screening events are presented in partnership with Florida Mobile Mammography, HealthyMe, Health Care District of Palm Beach County, Origin Church, Department of Health, and Monarch Health Services.
