| GROWING HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES FROM THE GROUND UP
By Jamie Ulmer, CEO of Healthcare Network
For 46 years, supporters across Southwest Florida and beyond have helped improve access to health care for all residents of Collier County, regardless of income, insurance or background.
Healthcare Network, founded in Immokalee in 1977, began caring for migrant farmworkers and underserved populations who had difficulties accessing primary health care. Southwest Florida has grown substantially over the years, of course, and so, too, has the need for integrated medical care.
Today, the Federally Qualified Health Center cares for more than 50,000 patients annually, including over half the children in Collier County. As the community grows, Healthcare Network’s highly trained staff continues to meet the needs of patients through 20 practices located throughout Collier County.

CANCER PATIENTS PAMPERED BY LOCAL BUSINESSES AND THE BROWARD HEALTH FOUNDATION IN PREPARATION FOR THE HOLIDAYS
December 22, 2023 – The Broward Health Foundation collaborated with EllaRae Boutique on December 15 for an amazing day, pampering 20 cancer patients at Broward Health Medical Center. The local boutique gifted cancer patients with personalized wigs and fittings. Patients also had their make-up done by the Cosmix School of Makeup Artistry.
It was an emotional experience for many, as women saw themselves in the mirror for the first time after their makeovers. Patients even cheered each other on while trying on their wigs.
“We want you to know how beautiful and strong you are,” said Priscilla Diaz, co-owner of EllaRae Boutique. “We know that facing cancer can impact self-confidence, and we hope that these wigs will not only enhance your outer beauty but also serve as a reminder of the strength within you.”
During the event, the women also got a chance to relax by doing yoga with Jill Adler and making bracelets with Letty donated by Marta’s beads, and Boston Proper held a raffle for a $250 gift card to be used for purchases from their clothing store. Images of the event were captured by Jaxton Photography.

BREAST MEDICAL ONCOLOGY PHYSICIANS AT MEMORIAL CANCER INSTITUTE RECOGNIZED FOR POSITIVE IMPACT ON PATIENTS
2023 PINK ANGEL AWARD
HOLLYWOOD, Fla., December 7, 2023 – The relationship between oncologists and cancer patients is one forged over months and years, during some of the most trying times an individual can experience. While clinical expertise is the most obvious asset a physician can bring, truly exceptional doctors also make emotional and spiritual connections that help patients navigate their cancer journey.
The Pink Angels of the Memorial Foundation know this better than most, since each of its members has had or currently has breast cancer. The volunteer group, citing the compassion, empathy, and determination of medical oncology physicians at Memorial Cancer Institute, presented its 2023 Pink Angel Award to Drs. Marcelo Blaya, Aurelio Castrellon, Alejandra Ergle, Delia Guaqueta Segura, and Adriana Milillo Naraine. The recognition took place at the “Touch of Pink” fundraiser at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, which raised more than $225,000 to provide programs and services for breast cancer patients and families in the Memorial Healthcare System.

TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL IMPLANTS 500TH HEARTMATE LEFT VENTRICULAR ASSIST DEVICE (LVAD) IN PATIENT WITH ADVANCED HEART FAILURE
The milestone is a result of the innovation, world-class care and expertise that define Tampa General Hospital.
Tampa, Fla. – December 22, 2023 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH), in collaboration with USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, has implanted its 500th HeartMate Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD).
The HeartMate LVAD is a surgically inserted mechanical circulatory pump that works in conjunction with the heart to help blood circulate through the body. The pump allows heart failure patients to live a more-normal life. It is currently the only durable pump in the United States approved for implantation, and it is the most advanced device in this field. The HeartMate LVAD uses a patented technology (Full MagLev Flow Technology) to protect blood as it flows through the pump.
“What’s so remarkable about this surgery is that it could also be implanted minimally invasively. We make an incision near the top and the left side of the patient’s breastbone and insert the HeartMate,” said Dr. Lucian Lozonschi, director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Center of Excellence, Tampa General Hospital, and professor and chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. “We don’t have to fully open the patient’s chest, which can be beneficial for patients during their recovery and the HeartMate can even be implanted in patients with several previous heart surgeries.”
For the 6.2 million adults in the U.S. suffering from chronic heart failure, the HeartMate can reverse the symptoms of heart failure, allowing patients the opportunity to live up to 10 and 15 years longer.

MAYO CLINIC COMPREHENSIVE CANCER CENTER HIGHLIGHTS RESEARCH ADVANCES IN 2023
December 21, 2023 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic researchers make new discoveries, develop first-of-its-kind tools and technologies and constantly improve upon existing ones with the goal to provide the best in healthcare. The following five stories are a round-up of some of the most significant medical research advances at Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center over the past year. Discoveries range from harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) to detect disease sooner to advancing treatments for rare and complex diseases.
ADVANCING ULTRASOUND MICROVESSEL IMAGING AND AI TO IMPROVE CANCER DETECTION
Tumors consist not only of cancer cells but also a matrix of small blood vessels, or microvessels, that cannot be seen in the images produced by conventional ultrasound machines. To solve this problem, physician-scientist Azra Alizad, M.D., and biomedical engineering scientist Mostafa Fatemi, Ph.D., teamed up at Mayo Clinic to design and study a tool that may improve the resolution of ultrasound imaging. As demonstrated in research findings, they developed high-resolution ultrasound imaging software, compatible with many ultrasound machines, that could exponentially improve both the detail and quality of images.
“If we can visualize and capture the microvessel in the earliest stages of cancer, we can better diagnose and treat it earlier, which improves the outcome for the patient,” says Dr. Alizad, who specializes in ultrasound technology for cancer imaging.

RESEARCHERS MAP HOW MEASLES VIRUS SPREADS IN HUMAN BRAIN
December 21, 2023 – ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic researchers mapped how the measles virus mutated and spread in the brain of a person who succumbed to a rare, lethal brain disease. New cases of this disease, which is a complication of the measles virus, may occur as measles reemerges among the unvaccinated, say researchers.
Using the latest tools in genetic sequencing, researchers at Mayo Clinic reconstructed how a collective of viral genomes colonized a human brain. The virus acquired distinct mutations that drove the spread of the virus from the frontal cortex outward.
