BREAST CANCER PATIENT UNDERGOES EARLY-STAGE TREATMENT WHILE HOLDING HER CROWN HIGH
November 14, 2023 – Decade-long Broward Health patient Maria Fahmie takes breast health seriously, particularly because her mother is a stage 3 breast cancer survivor. The Hollywood resident loves swimming in the ocean, riding her bike and dancing. She makes it a priority to schedule her annual routine mammograms and ultrasounds at the Lillian S. Wells Women’s Health Center at Broward Health Medical Center.
“I could go somewhere closer to home, but I’ve been receiving my health screenings at Broward Health for the past 10 years and by going to the same health facility, I know that my mammograms and ultrasounds can be easily compared from year to year,” said Fahmie.
Fahmie underwent a mammogram in February 2023 that indicated no presence of breast cancer, but an ultrasound revealed a small lump that prompted a biopsy. Fahmie did not worry too much at first, as previous procedures had shown no signs of cancer. However, it wasn’t until a second biopsy was requested that she began to feel concerned.

November 14, 2023 – In 2021, 61.2 million Americans ages 12 and older used illicit drugs and more than 106,000 died from drug-involved overuse. Florida ranks second to California, with 5,300 annual overdose deaths, outpacing the national average by about 23 percent. Excessive alcohol use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States and is associated with numerous health issues, including heart disease, cancer and poor mental health.
Although individuals with substance use disorder use outpatient sober support services and resources, relapse rates are still as high as 70 percent, indicating a need for more treatment modalities.

MAYO CLINIC STUDY SUGGESTS LOWER EXTREMITY LYMPHEDEMA IS A RISK FACTOR FOR MULTIPLE TYPES OF SKIN CANCER
ROCHESTER, Minn. — New research from Mayo Clinic finds that patients with lymphedema —swelling of the limbs caused by the accumulation of protein-rich fluids of the immune system — had twice the risk of developing skin cancer than patients without lymphedema.
Patients with lymphedema had a significantly higher frequency of developing basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas on the lower extremities, according to the retrospective study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings. The study contributes to growing information linking lymphedema to localized changes in immunity and a predisposition for cancer.

A NEW SMARTPHONE APPLICATION AIMS TO PREDICT THE SAFETY OF LIVER SURGERY
November 8, 2023 — An international research team led by Dr. Patrick Starlinger, a hepatobiliary and pancreas surgeon from Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, developed a risk prediction model that can be calculated with a smartphone app. It provides an individualized risk assessment for patients before liver resection to evaluate the safety of liver surgery. Compared to standard preoperative tests, the research suggests the model offers a predictive model for postoperative liver failure.
The model’s effectiveness is documented in a paper that involved more than 14,000 patients from 10 different institutions and the National Surgery Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), an algorithm-based database from the U.S. The study is published in the Annals of Surgery.

American Lung Association’s annual report also finds Black community least likely to receive surgical treatment
November 14, 2023 – Today, the American Lung Association in Florida released its 2023 “State of Lung Cancer” report, which finds that the rate of lung cancer screening in Florida is far too low at 2.4%, compared to the national average of 4.5%. DIFFERENT TRANSFUSION APPROACHES FOR HELPING HEART ATTACK PATIENTS WHO DEVELOP ANEMIA RECOVER LED TO SIMILAR 30-DAY OUTCOMES
NIH-funded findings suggest potential benefit of giving more blood to patients.
November 12, 2023 – A National Institutes of Health-supported study found that the type of transfusion approach used to support adults who developed anemia after a heart attack did not make a significant difference in their likelihood of having another heart attack or dying within 30 days. Participants in the trial were randomized to receive a red blood cell transfusion when their red blood cell counts were in a prespecified range of moderate anemia, which is considered a liberal approach, or when it was more severe, a restrictive approach.
However, the researchers found that some adults who received blood at an earlier stage appeared to have slightly better health outcomes. Researchers encourage a flexible, nuanced approach in making these transfusion decisions.

STUDY FINDS POOR VENTILATION USE DURING CPR FOR OUT-OF-HOSPITAL CARDIAC ARREST
NIH-supported findings suggest improved techniques for rescue breathing could save more lives.
November 13, 2023 – The ventilation technique, also known as rescue breathing, commonly used during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for people with cardiac arrest is often performed poorly by professional emergency responders, and this ineffective strategy is linked to significantly worse patient survival rates, according to a study supported by the National Institutes of Health. Ventilation involves administering breaths to a patient to provide life-sustaining oxygen and inflate the lungs when they stop breathing or during cardiac arrest, when the heart suddenly stops pumping blood. Among the nearly 2,000 people in the study who received CPR for out-of-hospital cardiac arrests, those who were given a higher number of effective ventilations had survival rates three times greater than those who were given fewer ventilations.
