HISTORIC GIFT FROM TANEJA FAMILY FOUNDATION SURPASSES $120 MILLION IN TOTAL CONTRIBUTIONS TOWARD TAMPA GENERAL’S INITIATIVE TO TRANSFORM HEALTH CARE THROUGH INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY
Tampa, FL – April 15, 2024 – Tampa General Hospital (TGH) today celebrated more than $120 million in charitable contributions over a two-year period to advance its vision to transform health care through innovation. The latest gift toward the $120 million milestone came from the Taneja Family Foundation and is the largest in the foundation’s history.
As part of the celebration, Tampa General leadership, community leaders and members of the Taneja family broke ground on the Taneja Surgical, Neuroscience & Transplant Tower, a medical pavilion in the heart of Tampa Bay, where patients will have access to best-in-class providers, the latest research therapies and state-of-the-art technologies. The tower bears the Taneja name in honor of the Taneja Family Foundation’s contribution to the TGH Foundation.
“Patients come to Tampa General for world-class care, and the addition of this new tower on our campus, thanks in part to the generosity of the Taneja family, enhances our ability to deliver the highest level of academic-based medicine,” said John Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General Hospital. “The Taneja family shares our vision that through innovation, we can transform health care and improve patient outcomes. The new Taneja Surgical, Neuroscience & Transplant Tower will be an intersection of academics, research and clinical care that will elevate how we are able to treat patients with complex conditions.”

TWO CLINICAL TRIALS AT MIAMI CANCER INSTITUTE INVESTIGATE NOVEL APPROACHES FOR THE TREATMENT OF ACUTE MYELOID LEUKEMIA
MIAMI, FL – April 15, 2024 – Researchers at Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, are currently conducting two clinical trials using novel therapeutic approaches to treating patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a form of blood cancer that can be aggressive or classified at high-risk based on certain molecular structures detected within the leukemic cell population. Patients with high-risk AML are at risk of developing disease recurrence. Therefore, novel and innovative approaches are needed to improve their outcomes.
Patients in these two trials undergo initial chemotherapy followed by an allogeneic (donor-derived) stem cell transplantation. The first trial, which recently started enrolling patients, is using CRISPR technology to down-regulate a donor’s gene as part of a treatment regimen in those patients with high-risk AML who are at risk of relapsing after transplant. The second trial is using CAR-T cells – a form of immunotherapy – generated from the stem cell donor to specifically target the leukemic cell population at time of disease recurrence following the stem cell transplant.
“We have made significant progress in the treatment of leukemias in the last decade,” said Guenther Koehne, M.D., Ph.D., deputy director of Miami Cancer Institute, chief of blood & marrow transplantation and hematologic oncology, and co-investigator of the studies. “The results of this latest research has enabled us to deliver more sophisticated and customized care and to treat many individuals who remain at risk of leukemia recurrence.”

WHEN EMERGENCY PHYSICIANS REGULARLY FEAR VIOLENCE AT WORK, IT’S PAST TIME FOR CHANGE
April 16, 2024 – WASHINGTON, D.C.—As the nation’s employers acknowledge April as Workplace Violence Prevention Awareness Month, members of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) are on Capitol Hill this week to advocate for legislation to strengthen protections for health care workers on the job, as part of the 2024 Leadership and Advocacy Conference.
“When our status quo involves daily fear of assault, it’s time for change,” said Aisha Terry, MD, FACEP, president of ACEP. “Emergency physicians have to be able to focus on caring for patients, without fearing for their safety. We cannot do that if entire care teams are put in harm’s way every time we go to work. Now is the time for legislative solutions that protect health care workers and patients.”
More than nine in ten (91%) emergency physician respondents report being threatened or attacked in the past year, according to a 2024 ACEP poll of its members. In fact, nearly three-quarters (71%) of respondents believe that violence in the emergency department is worse than last year. As part of the polling, ACEP gathered more than 800 troubling stories directly from emergency physicians.
These firsthand accounts reveal that emergency physicians and their teams are regularly assaulted. Most have been punched, kicked, or spat on. Many have had heavy or sharp medical equipment thrown at them. Some have been threatened with weapons ranging from guns and knives to hatchets or machetes.
Current and previous polling underscores that emergency physicians feel they have little to no recourse. Fortunately, nearly half (48%) of the 2024 poll respondents said that legislation to strengthen workforce protections would make them feel safer on the job.

MICROPLASTICS, ALGAL BLOOMS, SEAFOOD SAFETY ARE PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERNS ADDRESSED BY NEW OCEANS AND HUMAN HEALTH CENTERS
NIH and NSF jointly fund new research centers to better understand how ocean-related exposures affect people’s health.
APRIL 16, 2024 – To address plastics and other problems that could affect human health, the NIH and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) are jointly funding four new Centers for Oceans and Human Health and renewing two centers as part of a marine-related health research program. Each Center will focus on a different aspect of the interplay between environmental science, climate change, and human health in the ocean or Great Lakes. Together the two agencies plan to invest more than $42 million over five years for the centers program, continuing a two-decade long collaboration. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) administers the centers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and supports individual research projects that focus on the ocean and the Great Lakes and their impact on human health.
Millions of tons of small pieces of plastic, referred to as microplastics are finding their way into the world’s oceans. These microplastics, ranging from the size of a width of a pencil to smaller than a sesame seed, often get eaten by fish and shellfish and are passed to humans through seafood consumption. They also act as microscopic sponges, attracting, concentrating, and carrying pollutants into new environments. These plastic particles and other factors, including a warming climate and more extreme weather events, are affecting the health of our waterways, and, in turn, the health of our citizens.
“We know very little about what these microplastics or even smaller pieces of plastics, known as nanoplastics, can do to human health in the short-or long-term, or even what they can do to the health of the sea turtles and other animals that live in the ocean,” said Anika Dzierlenga, Ph.D., program lead at the NIEHS.

SKIN TEST DETECTS EVIDENCE OF PARKINSON’S AND RELATED DISORDERS
A study showed that a simple skin biopsy could identify people who had Parkinson’s disease or similar disorders with a high degree of accuracy.
The findings could lead to earlier, more accurate diagnosis of the neurodegenerative conditions known as synucleinopathies.
April 2 2024 – Alpha-synuclein is a protein found in brain and nerve cells. Its normal functions are poorly understood. But when an abnormal form of this protein accumulates in the brain and nervous system, it can lead to serious neurodegenerative disorders. These are collectively known as synucleinopathies. Parkinson’s disease is the most common. Others include dementia with Lewy bodies, multiple system atrophy, and pure autonomic failure.
These four disorders have some similarities. Common symptoms include tremors, cognitive changes, and progressive disability. There’s been no reliable and quantitative way to detect these conditions and measure their severity. Diagnosis often depends on assessment by specialists in movement or cognitive disorders.
