BETTER TOGETHER LAUNCHES CALL CENTER FOR BROWARD COUNTY RESIDENTS
Historic partnership enhances access to care
JUNE 12, 2025 – Broward Health and Memorial Healthcare System are proud to announce a significant milestone in their Better Together collaboration: the launch of a dedicated call center that connects residents to nearby healthcare services across Broward County.
“Better Together has gained significant momentum as the initiative’s governance committee has convened every month to focus on existing needs related to primary care, maternal health and food insecurity,” said Shane Strum, President & CEO of Broward Health and Interim CEO of Memorial Healthcare System. “The committee, comprised of leaders from Broward Health, Memorial Healthcare System and other community organizations, is identifying barriers people are facing to access these resources and innovative ways we can meet their needs.”
Residents can now call 844-711-0794 and a representative will link them to primary or maternity care services, such as brick-and-mortar physician offices or mobile health units, in convenient and easily accessible locations.
“This call center is more than just a phone number; it’s a lifeline for families who have struggled to navigate the complexity of healthcare,” said Melida Akiti, corporate transformation executive at Broward Health. “By listening to our community and working collaboratively with partners across the county, we’re removing barriers and bringing care directly to those who need it most.”

Wayne Brackin Shares Thoughts on New Challenges Coming This Hurricane Season
By Vanessa Orr
According to models from AccuWeather and Colorado State University, the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is predicted to be above average, with more storms and hurricanes than the 30-year average. While an active season is nothing new in Florida, this year the state is facing other issues, including the current administration’s cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Weather Service (NWS) and FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency).
More than a dozen positions have been cut at NWS offices across Florida, which is responsible for weather forecasts and warnings when there are storm threats. Approximately one-third of FEMA’s staff has been let go or have accepted buyouts. This could not only affect the timeliness and accuracy of forecasts, but also any assistance communities may require after a natural disaster.
“We’ve been paying close attention to what’s happening with NOAA and the NWS and FEMA, all of which are under some form of duress from these changes,” said Wayne Brackin, president and CEO of KIDZ Medical Services, and former Baptist Health South Florida executive who’s been recognized for leading hospital and health system hurricane and emergency preparedness efforts.
“What’s going on with FEMA is still a moving target, so no one can speak with absolute certainly yet. But if the FEMA staff was 6,000 people and 2,000 are no longer there, it’s safe to say we can expect to see some impact downstream.

Effort mobilizes 500 Black men in Lauderhill and Overtown to prioritize preventive health
On June 9, 2025, the City of Lauderhill recognized Black Men’s Health Month and the launch of the Take Your Loved One to the Doctor (TYLOTD) campaign — a bold, community-led effort powered by the Health Foundation of South Florida to address the urgent health disparities affecting Black men in Lauderhill and Overtown. Inspired by the national initiative launched by radio host Tom Joyner, this local activation meets men where they are—building trust and expanding access to care.
Launched during Men’s Health Month and continuing through September’s Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, the campaign aims to engage 500 Black men to take themselves — and someone they care about — to the doctor. With a focus on preventive care, early detection, and access to services, Take Your Loved One to the Doctor is designed to break cycles of medical mistrust and survival-mode health habits.
Take Your Loved One to the Doctor Campaign Highlights:
Cut for Care Weekend: Barbershops become wellness hubs offering free screenings and pledge sign-ups Wellness Checkpoint Events: Clinics and mobile units provide screenings and care navigation for the uninsured Health is Wealth Communications Campaign: A culturally grounded media campaign in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole

This is about showing up for yourself and for your loved ones.”

| MD Anderson and HealthEx announce collaboration to develop new platform to give patients direct control of data access
Platform aims to simplify and improve patient consent process to strengthen future initiatives
June 9 2025 – The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and HealthEx today announced a strategic collaboration aimed at developing tools for streamlining the patient consent process while also creating more transparency and control for patients in how their data is used.
As part of this collaboration, MD Anderson and HealthEx will work together for continued development and future implementation of HealthEx’s artificial intelligence (AI)-driven global consent and data rights management platform to enable fast, compliant and patient-centric data access. Building on complementary strengths, this collaboration furthers MD Anderson’s thoughtful approach to enabling data-driven advances while simultaneously providing proper stewardship of patient data.
“Patients understand the value their data has to researchers working to end cancer, but they also want and deserve to know how their data is used and who is using it,” said David Jaffray, Ph.D., chief technology and digital officer at MD Anderson. “Through this collaboration, we are co-creating new approaches to simplify the consent process so patients can make more informed decisions about their data than is possible using existing technology. This collaboration is an example of how we are taking a progressive approach to creating a health data ecosystem that is grounded in both transparency and accountability.”

Double the Joy: Marple Family Celebrates First Father’s Day with Twin NICU Babies at Home
June 12, 2025 – This Father’s Day holds extra meaning for Andrew Marple, MD, a medical oncologist and member of Sarasota Memorial’s Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute team. For the first time, Dr. Marple and wife Danielle will celebrate the holiday with both of their twin daughters—Adriana and Sophia—finally home and thriving.
Born prematurely in 2023 at just 25 weeks gestation, Adriana and Sophia faced an uphill battle from the very beginning. Their mother, Danielle Marple, APRN, a critical care nurse practitioner with First Physicians Group, developed severe early-onset preeclampsia and was hospitalized at SMH at only 23 weeks pregnant. Just over two weeks later, the twins were delivered when Danielle’s condition became critical.
Adriana weighed just 1 lb. 4 oz. at birth. Sophia was even smaller—only 11 oz. Despite the odds, both girls received expert, round-the-clock care in the SMH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Sophia was able to go home just in time for the Marple’s first Father’s Day in 2024. Adriana required nearly a full year hospitalized before joining her family at home.

HSS Research at EULAR 2025 Congress Shows Routine Test Could Enable Faster, More-Effective Personalized Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatmen
June 12, 2025- Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) presented new findings at the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) Annual Meeting that could help pave the way for more personalized treatment for people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) by analyzing the cellular composition of synovial fluid inside their joints.
RA is a chronic disease characterized by inflammation in the synovium, the tissue that covers the inner surface of the joint cavity. Although usually accompanied by joint pain, swelling and deterioration, the level of inflammation varies from patient to patient, potentially requiring customized treatment plans. “What is surprising to us is that there are some patients who have clinical remission, yet continue to experience pain and show radiographic progression of the disease with high levels of synovial inflammation, while others have high disease activity with many swollen and tender joints and little inflammation in the synovial tissue” said Susan M. Goodman, MD, rheumatologist at HSS and principal investigator of the study. She explained that even when standard tests suggest the disease is under control, the joint fluid can still show high levels of inflammation. “By analyzing synovial fluid characteristics, we expected it might give us some insight into the disparity between disease progression and apparent remission,” she added.
The team analyzed samples from 64 patients with RA, 90.6% of whom were women, and with a median age of 65.3 ±11.7 years. The physicians collected synovial fluid samples to analyze and compare with the synovial tissue biopsy counterpart, which defines the inflammatory profile of the disease.

NIH researchers identify brain circuits responsible for visual acuity
Studies demonstrate the effect of retinal injury on visual processing pathways, providing insights for the development of vision restoration therapies.
June 4, 2025- Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have identified which brain circuits are vital for visual acuity and how they are affected by damaged retinal cells. While vision restoration therapies, such as stem-cell and gene therapies, aim to replace or repair damaged cells in the eye, it is critical to understand how brain circuits involved in vision are affected by retinal cell loss. Study results suggest that targeting these circuits may be necessary to achieve optimal recovery of visual function, and have significant implications for the development of future vision restoration therapies that address visual pathways beyond the retina. The study published today in The Journal of Neuroscience.
“A huge amount of progress has been made in repairing the eye, however little attention has been paid to the functional consequences beyond the eye,” said the study’s lead investigator, Farran Briggs, Ph.D., senior investigator at NIH’s National Eye Institute (NEI). “Brain circuits downstream of damaged or dying retinal cells in the eye may also undergo some loss of function following changes to their retinal inputs.”

NIH researchers conclude that taurine is unlikely to be a good aging biomarker
Findings show this amino acid did not longitudinally decline with age
June 12, 2025 – Scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have found that levels of circulating taurine, a conditionally essential amino acid involved in multiple important biological functions, is unlikely to serve as a good biomarker for the aging process. In blood samples from humans, monkeys, and mice, scientists found that circulating taurine levels often increased or remained constant with age. Analysis of longitudinal data showed that within individual differences in taurine levels often exceeded age-related changes. Researchers also found that taurine levels were inconsistently associated with health outcomes across age, species, and cohorts, suggesting that declining taurine is not a universal marker of aging. Instead, its impact may depend on individual physiological contexts shaped by genetic, nutritional, and environmental factors. Results are published in Science.
Taurine recently gained popularity as dietary supplement due to recent research that found supplementation with taurine improved multiple age-related traits and extended lifespan in model organisms (worms and mice). However, there is no solid clinical data that shows its supplementation benefits humans.
“A recent research article on taurine led us to evaluate this molecule as a potential biomarker of aging in multiple species,” said Rafael de Cabo, Ph.D., study co-author and chief of the Translational Gerontology Branch at NIH’s National Institute on Aging (NIA).
