A Safe Haven for Newborns Thanks Volunteers for Their Contributions
Volunteers Help Build Community Engagement
MIAMI, FL — April 24, 2025 — The Gloria M. Silverio Foundation, a 501(c)(3), d/b/a A Safe Haven for Newborns, expresses its deepest gratitude to the volunteers across the nation who are dedicated to making a positive impact in their communities. “It is a great honor, and a humbling experience, to work side-by-side with such a dedicated group of volunteers who give selflessly of their time,” said Nick Silverio, Founder.
Volunteers play a crucial role in expanding the reach of A Safe Haven for Newborns within the community. They actively engage in community outreach and raise awareness about the Foundation’s services. By building community partnerships and promoting the mission to end infant abandonment, volunteers serve as the bridge between the nonprofit and the community. Their diverse experiences, perspectives, and skill sets enrich the Foundation and its mission. They are the pillars of their communities and the backbone of the Foundation.
Volunteers also contribute to the Foundation’s efforts through social media engagement. They can share their experiences and the positive impact they’ve made in their communities by tagging friends in social media posts. This helps spread awareness about the Foundation’s mission and encourages others to get involved. For students, A Safe Haven for Newborns has developed an App that allows them to fulfill their community service hours requirements from home. Once the school administrator approves the use of the App, students have the option to complete three tasks: create an awareness video, write an article for the monthly newsletter, or design a poster.
Through grassroots efforts, dedication, and community involvement, A Safe Haven for Newborns aims to reach teens and women facing unexpected pregnancies and provide them with the support they need in their local communities. Some of the referral services offered at no cost include temporary shelter, maternity homes, counseling, health-related issues, transportation to prenatal care appointments, newborn necessities, assistance with abuse issues, suicide prevention, and information on adoption. A Safe Haven for Newborns also oversees a 24/7 multilingual confidential national helpline, offering support and guidance to distraught mothers in their respective states.

Kids’ Minds Matter receives $225,000 gift from Suncoast Credit Union Foundation for Mental Health Navigator Program
Multi-year funding will support care navigation for children and families across Lee County from 2026 to 2028
April 24, 2025 – Kids’ Minds Matter has been awarded a $225,000 multi-year gift from Suncoast Credit Union Foundation to sustain its highly impactful Mental Health Navigator Program. The funding, distributed over three years beginning in 2026, will ensure continuity of care for families facing mental and behavioral health challenges across Southwest Florida.
The Mental Health Navigator Program launched as a pilot in 2020, the result of a leadership gift from Suncoast Credit Union Foundation, and has since grown into a robust, regional model for behavioral health support. Today, it includes 10 navigators embedded in public schools, pediatric practices and community organizations, serving some of the region’s most vulnerable children and families.
“I feel deeply fulfilled knowing that my work helps families heal and grow together,” said Farren Williams, mental health navigator at Golisano Children’s Hospital. “It’s incredible to witness the resilience that can emerge when individuals receive the support they need. Helping families navigate their challenges and improve their relationships is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.”
Navigators are experienced caregivers of individuals with serious emotional stressors who provide peer mentoring, resource referrals and personalized guidance through the complex mental health system. They help families access basic needs, like food and rental assistance, while also connecting them to long-term behavioral health care. The navigators do not provide therapy, but serve as trusted guides, breaking down barriers to care.

Hospitals Are Cornerstones of Communities. We Must Tell Our Stories to Protect Access to Care
BY: Rick Pollack, President and CEO, AHA
APRIL 25, 2025 – One year ago, a nurse at Children’s Hospital Colorado went above and beyond in a way that a very young patient and her family will never forget.
Kayla McCarthy specializes in working with young children awaiting or recovering from organ transplants. In May 2024, she was approved as a living organ donor and contributed a piece of her liver to a young toddler in her hospital, helping to save the child’s life.
McCarthy’s remarkable gift symbolizes with a single gesture what hospitals and their phenomenal care teams mean to the people and communities they serve. It is more than just the doors that are always open to all, any time of day or night. It is even more than the dependable, quality, compassionate care delivered to patients every minute of every day in every corner of the nation.
The bond between hospitals and their communities reaches deeper. Hospitals and health systems offer programs that provide healthy food, preventive wellness education and maternal support services to ensure healthy births. Hospitals and health systems provide critical behavioral and mental health services. Hospitals and health systems are major employers, supporting families and businesses while providing a financial foundation that helps communities to thrive. And hospitals and health systems partner with community organizations to address the unique needs of the patients and neighborhoods they serve.

HHS Office for Civil Rights Settles HIPAA Ransomware Cybersecurity Investigation with Neurology Practice
Settlement Marks OCR’s 12th Ransomware Enforcement Action and 8th Enforcement Action in OCR’s Risk Analysis Initiative
APRIL 25, 2025 – Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced a settlement with Comprehensive Neurology, PC (Comprehensive), a small New York neurology practice, concerning a potential violation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Security Rule. The settlement resolves an OCR investigation of a ransomware attack against Comprehensive.
OCR enforces the HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules, which set forth the requirements that covered entities (health plans, health care clearinghouses, and most health care providers), and business associates must follow to protect the privacy and security of protected health information (PHI). The HIPAA Security Rule establishes national standards to protect and secure our health care information systems by requiring administrative, physical, and technical safeguards to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, security, and availability of electronic PHI (ePHI). One of these standards, known as the “Risk Analysis provision,” requires a regulated organization to conduct an accurate and thorough assessment of the potential risks and vulnerabilities to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of ePHI held by that organization.
“Effective cybersecurity requires proactively implementing the HIPAA Security Rule requirements before a breach or cybersecurity incident occurs,” said OCR Acting Director Anthony Archeval. “OCR urges health care entities to prioritize compliance with the HIPAA Security Rule risk analysis requirement.”

HHS Office for Civil Rights Settles Phishing Attack Breach with Health Care Network for $600,000
Hacked email accounts result in breach affecting nearly 200,000 individuals
APRIL 23 2025 – Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced a settlement with PIH Health, Inc. (PIH), a California health care network, over potential violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). The violations stem from a phishing attack that exposed unsecured electronic protected health information (ePHI), prompting concerns related to the Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules under HIPAA.
OCR enforces the HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules (HIPAA Rules), which set forth the requirements that covered entities (health plans, health care clearinghouses, and most health care providers), and business associates must follow to protect the privacy and security of Americans’ protected health information (PHI).
“Hacking is one of the most common types of large breaches reported to OCR every year,” said OCR Acting Director Anthony Archeval. “HIPAA-regulated entities need to be proactive and remedy the deficiencies in their HIPAA compliance programs before those deficiencies result in the impermissible disclosure of patients’ protected health information.”

MIAMI, FL – April 10, 2025 – In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, NAMI Miami-Dade County (National Alliance on Mental Illness) will host its Fifth Annual Mental Health Awareness Walk on May 10, 2025, at 8:00 AM at loanDepot Park. This inspiring community event raises awareness, provides support, and generates critical funds for NAMI Miami-Dade’s free mental health programs.
The walk is a vital initiative dedicated to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and addressing the rising need for accessible mental health support. In 2024, NAMI Miami-Dade reached over 98,000 individuals through its awareness, prevention, outreach, education, training, and support programs.
“Now more than ever, people need a safe place to seek help for mental health conditions, whether for themselves or their loved ones,” said Susan Holtzman, NAMI Miami-Dade President & CEO. “Last year, we had 3,500 participants, and this year we expect 4,000. It’s 4,000 people coming together to learn, connect, and support each other and their community. The funds we raise support our ability to provide education, support, and advocacy for people with mental health conditions and their loved ones all year long. Join them, join us, contribute, and come on out for a great day at the stadium.”
