MEDICARE ADVANTAGE AND MEDICARE PRESCRIPTION DRUG PROGRAMS TO REMAIN STABLE IN 2024

September 26, 2023 – Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that average premiums, benefits, and plan choices for Medicare Advantage and the Medicare Part D prescription drug program will remain stable in 2024. Improvements adopted in the 2024 Rate Announcement, as well as the 2024 Medicare Advantage and Part D Final Rule, such as increased beneficiary protections around marketing and prior authorization and increased access to behavioral health, support this stability. CMS is committed to ensuring these programs work for people enrolled in Medicare, that benefits remain strong and stable, and that payments to plans are accurate.

Additionally, thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, people with Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage will continue to have improved and more affordable benefits, including a $35 cost-sharing limit on a month’s supply of each covered insulin product, recommended adult vaccines at no cost, and additional savings on their Medicare Part D drug coverage costs in 2024. These savings include the expansion of the Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) program, also called Extra Help, which helps eligible enrollees afford their premiums and cost-sharing, as well as a cap on out-of-pocket costs for millions of people with very high drug costs in the catastrophic phase of the Part D benefit.

CMS is releasing this key information, including 2024 premiums and deductibles for Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D prescription drug plans, ahead of the upcoming Medicare Open Enrollment, beginning October 15, 2023, to help people with Medicare determine the best Medicare coverage option for their health care needs.

THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH (NIH) AWARDS HEALTH CHOICE NETWORK WITH FUNDING FOR COMMUNITY-LED RESEARCH PROGRAM: ADDRESSING FOOD INSECURITY IN UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES

SEPTEMBER 27, 2023 – Through the NIH Common Fund Community Partnerships to Advance Science for Society (ComPASS), NIH awards Health Choice Network (HCN), the first funded nation-wide collaboration of health centers, with multi-year funding for the first-of-its-kind community-led research program to study ways to address the underlying structural factors within communities that affect health.

Led by Health Choice Network, the effort titled “Addressing Food Insecurity in Underserved Communities” or FoodCom, is a collaboration with coalition partners including the University of Miami’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), and Community Based Organizations including Feeding South Florida.

Two Florida Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), Jessie Trice Community Health System (JTCHS) and Broward Community and Family Health Centers (BCOM), will be the champion FQHCs in initiating system wide implementation of FoodCom. They will then provide guidance to other FQHCs who join FoodCom, serving as a model for others to begin to address food insecurity on a system-wide level.

Through FoodCom, HCN will catalyze, deploy, and evaluate community-led structural interventions, leveraging multisectoral partnerships to address food insecurity, and reduce health disparities at HCN FQHCs across Florida. The goal of the project is to implement system wide, structural level and policy changes to address food insecurity at the network level.

SYLVESTER RESEARCHER EARNS PRESTIGIOUS COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY AWARD

Glen N. Barber, PhD, receives university’s first Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize for contributions to biology and biochemistry research

September 20, 2023 – A researcher with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has been selected to receive a prestigious honor from Columbia University.

Glen N. Barber, Sylvester’s internationally known cell biologist who chairs UM’s Department of Cell Biology, will be awarded the 2023 Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize from Columbia for outstanding contributions to basic research in biology and biochemistry.

Barber is the first UM faculty member to receive this award, and more than 50% of previous honorees have gone on to win the Nobel Prize. The award, which carries a $10,000 prize was presented to Barber and fellow recipient, James Chen, at a recognition dinner in New York City.

Barber is being honored for his transformational research discovery known as STING (stimulator of interferon genes), a pivotal pathway controlling immune responses to infections and inflammation that also plays a vitally important role in triggering anti-tumor T-cell activity.

Since making the discovery in 2008, Barber and his team have conducted extensive research into STING signaling and made significant discoveries that have spawned efforts to design novel drugs that target this pathway for new treatments of various diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, systemic lupus and, more recently, leukemia and other cancers.

“This award is a tremendous honor for which I am both humbled and grateful,” Barber said. “I will be accepting it on behalf of many colleagues, past and present, whose contributions have been invaluable to our collective success.”

BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR SAYS STRESS AWARENESS AND COPING TECHNIQUES CAN HELP WOMEN NAVIGATE THE NEW COURSE THEIR LIVES WILL TAKE

Isabel Toca, a participant in a stress-reduction study at Sylvester, says the need for stress-management skills and emotional support starts at diagnosis and keeps going.

September 26, 2023 – Isabel Toca is quick to point out how fortunate she was that her breast cancer was detected so early – almost by accident. She needed only lumpectomies for removal, a three-week course of radiation therapy and a long-term regimen of an oral drug that treats hormone-dependent breast cancer.

But while she’s thankful that her breasts and her life have been spared, she’s also keenly aware that there’s no such thing as an “easy” cancer – one that comes without a fight or fear or emotional trauma.

“Normal life as I knew it no longer exists,” she says. “You create a ‘new normal’ life.”

She got help in that creation by joining a cancer survivors’ group that’s part of a study at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of UHealth, the University of Miami Health System. The study was aimed at helping current and future survivors recognize and combat the many manifestations of cancer-related stress.

Toca, 59, a resident of Miami, had faithfully undergone annual mammograms and ultrasounds for years. She’d even had a few minor procedures to biopsy and remove benign cysts. But when the COVID-19 pandemic upended routine life, her January 2021 appointment was postponed until later that year.

WHAT TO EXPECT FOR THE FLU, RSV AND COVID-19 RESPIRATORY SEASON

September 25, 2025  –  From Mayo Clinic: Influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19 are all part of the seasonal respiratory virus lineup. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the upcoming fall and winter are expected to have a similar number of hospitalizations for respiratory diseases as last year. However, they say it’s important to note that these hospitalization numbers are higher than before the COVID-19 pandemic when the leading causes were the flu and RSV.

Matthew Binnicker, Ph.D., director of the Clinical Virology Laboratory at Mayo Clinic, says researchers in the Northern Hemisphere look to the trends in the Southern Hemisphere, where winter is ending, to help forecast the upcoming respiratory season.

Watch: Dr. Matthew Binnicker talks about the upcoming 2023-2024 respiratory season

“We saw in Australia that they had a typical to, in some areas, more severe influenza season. And that’s what I expect this year is more of what we saw pre-pandemic,” says Dr. Binnicker.

“Whether it’s an average year or a more severe year will be based on a few factors: how well people abide by all the lessons we learned about staying home when you’re sick, masking if you’re sick, getting your influenza vaccination, but also the type of virus that’s circulating,” he says.

The CDC says the 2023 Southern Hemisphere flu vaccine reduced hospitalizations by 52%. If similar influenza virus strains spread in the Northern Hemisphere, the 2023-24 vaccine might provide equal protection.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF PICKLEBALL FOR OLDER ADULTS

September 14, 2023  – Pickleball is all the rage, and it’s been gaining popularity. It’s a sport that’s accessible for all ages, even those in their golden years and beyond.

The health benefits of pickleball for older adults are endless. The fairly simple sport is good for both the mind and the body, and it can also help you stay social as you age. So, if you think pickleball isn’t for you because of your age, think again.

ORIGINS OF THE GAME
You may think that pickleball is a fairly new, emerging sport in local communities around the world. However, it was actually invented in the summer of 1965 in Bainbridge, Washington.

According to USA Pickleball, a couple dads returning to their summer home one afternoon found their families bored and sitting around doing nothing. Their property had a badminton court, but they didn’t have enough rackets, so they improvised using ping pong paddles and a perforated ball instead. They quickly found the ball bounced better on asphalt, and thus, the popular past-time began.

Today, it is considered the fastest growing sport in the United States. It is estimated that Pickleball has 4.8 million participants nationwide and is growing by 39.3%.

5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT NEW ACCENTCARE CEO LAURA TORTORELLA

AccentCare recently tapped Steward Health Care COO Laura Tortorella as its new CEO. A look at her background reveals some of the reasons Tortorella may be well-suited for the role.

The Dallas-based home health and hospice provider announced on Sept. 14 that Tortorella would succeed former CEO Stephan Rodgers as he steps down. AccentCare is a portfolio company of the private equity firm Advent International.

“Laura has one of the sharpest analytical and entrepreneurial mindsets in the field and has spent her entire career building highly functioning teams that are committed to culture, performance, accountability and collaboration,” Carmine Petrone, managing director at Advent International, said in a press release. “She knows what is needed to maintain AccentCare’s position as a leader in the industry for years to come.”

IN ADDITION TO HER MORE THAN YEARS OF HEALTH CARE LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE, FIVE KEY QUALITIES LIKELY UNDERLIE TORTORELLA’S SELECTION.
EXPERIENCE WITH VALUE-BASED CARE

Value-based reimbursement is a rising tide, particularly for AccentCare’s diverse business lines. Medicare Advantage and Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) are making big inroads in the home health and palliative care markets, and hospice continues to inch in that direction.

Moreover, the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) indicated in 2021 that it wants to align 100% of Medicare beneficiaries with a value-based or accountable care payment system, a change to which health care providers of all stripes will have to adapt.

Steward Health Care, an integrated health system, has extensive relationships with commercial, Medicare Advantage and risk-based Medicaid organizations across every state in its footprint. All told, the company covers close to 1.5 million full-risk beneficiaries through its managed care and health insurance services.

The company also operates a large ACO that in 2020 received the second highest payout among 513 participants in the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP), according to CMS. The health system reportedly generated more than $68 million in cost savings for Medicare that year.

NIH DESIGNATES PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AS A POPULATION WITH HEALTH DISPARITIES

Designation, new research program and update to NIH mission are actions to ensure inclusion of people with disabilities.

SEPTEMBER 26, 2023 – Today, Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable, M.D., director of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), designated people with disabilities as a population with health disparities for research supported by the National Institutes of Health. The decision was made in consultation with Robert Otto Valdez, Ph.D., the director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, after careful consideration of a report delivered by an NIMHD advisory council, input from the disability community and a review of the science and evidence. A report issued in December 2022 by the Advisory Committee to the (NIH) Director (ACD), informed by the work of the Subgroup on Individuals with Disabilities, explored similar issues faced by people with disabilities. The designation is one of several steps NIH is taking to address health disparities faced by people with disabilities and ensure their representation in NIH research.

“This designation recognizes the importance and need for research advances to improve our understanding of the complexities leading to disparate health outcomes and multilevel interventions,” said Dr. Pérez-Stable. “Toward this effort, NIMHD and other NIH institutes launched a new research program to better understand the health disparities faced by people with disabilities who are also part of other populations designated as having health disparities.”

NIMHD is the lead NIH institute on monitoring minority health and health disparities research. Designated populations experience significant disparities in their rates of illness, morbidity, mortality and survival, driven by social disadvantage, compared to the health status of the general population. A health disparity designation helps to encourage research specific to the health issues and unmet health needs of these populations. Other NIH-designated populations with health disparities include racial and ethnic minority groups, people with lower socioeconomic status, underserved rural communities and sexual and gender minority groups.

COMBINED, HIGH MATERNAL STRESS AND PRENATAL COVID-19 INFECTION MAY AFFECT ATTENTION SPAN IN INFANTS

NIH-funded study identifies managing maternal stress as a possible way to lessen impacts of prenatal infection on infant socioemotional and cognitive development.

September 27, 2023 – For mothers who experience high stress during their pregnancy, prenatal COVID-19 infection may be associated with an increased risk for impaired attention and delayed socioemotional and cognitive functioning in their infants, according to a small study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, part of the National Institutes of Health. The findings highlight maternal stress as a modifiable target to potentially reduce negative outcomes from prenatal COVID-19 infection and the possible protective benefits to expectant mothers of getting vaccinated for COVID-19 during their pregnancy.

The study, which appears in Pediatric Research, was led by Denise Werchan, Ph.D., Moriah Thomason, Ph.D., and Natalie Brito, Ph.D., at New York University, New York. It included 167 mothers and their infants—50 who reported COVID-19 symptoms or a positive COVID-19 test during their pregnancy and 117 who did not report having COVID-19 while pregnant. The researchers enrolled families between March 2020 and January 2023, with most enrolled between March and August 2020.
