FROM KIDZ PREEMIE PATIENT TO KIDZ EMPLOYEE: EMILIE MARTINEZ COMES FULL CIRCLE
Emilie Martinez’s journey with KIDZ Medical Services – which provides specialized neonatal, pediatric, and obstetrical healthcare throughout South Florida – has come full circle. Born three months premature, Martinez was treated by Dr. Magaly Diaz-Barbosa and other KIDZ staff; 24 years later, Martinez is part of the KIDZ team herself.
“I weighed less than 1.5 pounds at birth and was treated in the NICU for several months,” explained Martinez, who now works at KIDZ as an IT professional. “My parents used to tell stories about Dr. Diaz and what a wonderful doctor she was. And whenever we visited the hospital campus when I was younger, we’d be sure to go say hi to her.”
Another KIDZ connection involved her mother, Idelsys, who worked at South Miami Hospital when KIDZ President and CEO Wayne Brackin was hospital CEO. Brackin and the HR director at the time, Sue Kuryla, went to see Martinez when she was discharged home and kept up with her progress over time. Martinez flourished under the clinical team’s care and as she grew, she also flourished as a student.

PALM BEACH GARDENS MEDICAL CENTER ACQUIRES NEW FARAPULSE™ PULSED FIELD ABLATION SYSTEM FOR ATRIAL FIBRILLATION
April 4, 2024 – Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center has acquired the FARAPULSE™ Pulsed Field Ablation System, a newly approved device for the treatment of atrial fibrillation, the most common type of heart arrhythmia. The first procedure at the hospital using the new system was performed by Dr. Matthew Klein on April 4th, 2024.
The FARAPULSE PFA System, which is manufactured by Boston Scientific, received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in January.[i] The new system offers an alternative treatment for atrial fibrillation than traditional thermal ablation, in which a catheter placed in the interior of the heart generates extreme temperatures – hot or cold – to destroy targeted areas in the heart associated with abnormal heart rhythms. Instead, the FARAPULSE PFA System relies on tissue-selective, non-thermal electric fields to ablate heart tissue and avoid damage to surrounding structures.
Atrial fibrillation occurs when the top two chambers of the heart, the atria, beat too fast and with an irregular rhythm (fibrillation). It can decrease the heart’s pumping efficiency, which can cause blood cells to pool and stick together, forming clots in the heart, and lead to stroke. People with atrial fibrillation have a higher risk of stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications than those with normal heart rhythms.[ii]

CLEVELAND CLINIC-LED TRIAL FINDS WEB APP TECHNOLOGY EFFECTIVE IN DETERMINING ACCESS TO CHOLESTEROL-LOWERING DRUGS WITHOUT PRESCRIPTION
TACTiC Trial presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 73rd Annual Scientific Session
April 8 2024 – Findings from a new Cleveland Clinic-led study suggest that a technology-assisted web application can help consumers appropriately determine if they qualify for a statin drug without a prescription.
During the trial, 1,196 participants used the web application and more than 90% correctly self-selected for statin use based on current guidelines compared with assessment by a clinician. Among those who then entered a six-month treatment phase,98% of consumers correctly used the drug, achieving a 35% reduction in LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol – also known as “bad” cholesterol.
These findings demonstrate that consumers can appropriately self-select and self-manage statin treatment with the assistance of a dedicated web application, potentially allowing expanded access to this important class of medications.

THE ESSENTIAL VALUE OF MEDICAL RESEARCH LIBRARIES
By Jaclyn Castek
In 1981, a group of clinical epidemiologists at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, led by David Sackett, an American-Canadian physician, introduced the concept of evidence-based medicine. Since then, the emphasis on utilizing the literature to follow the tenets of evidence-based medicine continues to grow.
The rapid growth of information technology and clinical information resources has made locating the literature needed to make the best evidence-based decisions for patient care complicated and time-consuming. The increased need for documentation and administrative duties has created a significant decrease in the time available to physicians and other health care professionals tasked with performing literature searches. Many hospitals and health care systems have a medical librarian, or team of librarians, who can help connect medical staff to vital information on evidence-based medicine.
Medical librarians are expert fact finders with skills and training in information retrieval. This skill set allows them to provide services that enable hospital staff to make timely and evidence-based decisions. Medical librarians help physicians, nurses, pharmacists, hospital administrators and allied health providers navigate information sources. Not only do medical librarians provide access to literature, they also often perform literature searches, provide instructional sessions on literature searches and evaluation and conduct one-on-one consultations. Additionally, they serve on interdisciplinary committees to provide high-quality evidence to support committee initiatives.

MAYO CLINIC, TERASAKI INSTITUTE LAUNCH COLLABORATION FOR TRANSPLANT INNOVATION
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- April 1, 2024 — Mayo Clinic and Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation announced today a research collaboration centered on improving organ transplant outcomes.
Beginning in April, Mayo Clinic biomedical researchers and Terasaki Institute scientists will work together on two core areas: real-time monitoring of donated organ health from procurement to transplant surgery and developing predictive technologies to determine which transplant recipients have a higher likelihood of rejection. That will be done by creating prognostic signatures and assays for antibody-mediated rejection of organ transplant. These initial projects are expected to take 24 to 30 months to complete.
“As the largest organ transplant provider in the United States, Mayo Clinic is deeply invested in finding innovative solutions to improve transplant care for patients. That is why we are so excited about this new collaboration with the Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation,” says Burcin Taner, M.D., chair of the Transplant Center at Mayo Clinic in Florida and chair of Mayo Clinic Transplant Specialty Council. “Bringing these two institutions together with the same goal of improving transplant outcomes for patients will positively affect many lives.”
“We are also very excited about our collaboration with Mayo Clinic,” says Ali Khademhosseini, Ph.D., director and CEO of the Terasaki Institute of Biomedical Innovation. “We’re looking forward to conducting impactful research to enhance the quality of life for transplant patients, and we are happy to build upon the work of Dr. Paul I. Terasaki, a pioneer in the field of organ transplantation, who founded the original Terasaki Institute.”

SHORT-TERM INCENTIVES FOR EXERCISE CAN LEAD TO SUSTAINED INCREASES IN ACTIVITY
NIH-supported study shows certain perks can spur long-term behavior change in adults with cardiovascular disease risks
April 7, 2024- Adults with heart disease risks who received daily reminders or incentives to become more active increased their daily steps by more than 1,500 after a year, and many were still sticking with their new habit six months later, according to a study supported by the National Institutes of Health that published in Circulation(link is external).
The improvements, which also resulted in an extra 40 minutes of moderate exercise each week, correlated with a 6% reduced risk of premature death and a 10% reduced risk of cardiovascular-related deaths, compared to data from prior studies. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends(link is external) that most adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week, such as brisk walking, or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise, like fast cycling, or a combination of the two, paired with twice-weekly strength sessions.

AI MAKES RETINAL IMAGING 100 TIMES FASTER, COMPARED TO MANUAL METHOD
NIH scientists use artificial intelligence called ‘P-GAN’ to improve next-generation imaging of cells in the back of the eye.
April 10, 2024- Researchers at the National Institutes of Health applied artificial intelligence (AI) to a technique that produces high-resolution images of cells in the eye. They report that with AI, imaging is 100 times faster and improves image contrast 3.5-fold. The advance, they say, will provide researchers with a better tool to evaluate age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other retinal diseases.
“Artificial intelligence helps overcome a key limitation of imaging cells in the retina, which is time,” said Johnny Tam, Ph.D., who leads the Clinical and Translational Imaging Section at NIH’s National Eye Institute.
Tam is developing a technology called adaptive optics (AO) to improve imaging devices based on optical coherence tomography (OCT). Like ultrasound, OCT is noninvasive, quick, painless, and standard equipment in most eye clinics.
