Advancing Alzheimer’s Care in South Florida: Earlier Diagnosis, Better Outcomes, Stronger Communities
By Dr. Ranjan Duara
In South Florida, Alzheimer’s disease is more than a medical challenge—it is a growing public health priority. Nearly half a million Floridians are currently living with the disease, and that number is expected to rise sharply in the coming years. Meeting this challenge requires earlier diagnosis, effective treatments, and comprehensive support systems that reflect the diversity of our state.
At Mount Sinai Medical Center, our work through the Florida Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC)—a National Institute on Aging–funded collaboration between the University of Florida, University of Miami, Florida International University and Florida Atlantic University, transforming how we approach Alzheimer’s care and research in South Florida. Our mission: provide the most accurate diagnoses, deliver the treatment and care to the patient and the patients’ loved ones that improves quality of life today while advancing research that shapes the future of treatment and prevention.
Detecting Alzheimer’s Earlier
Alzheimer’s begins years before symptoms become obvious. At the Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders, we combine detailed patient history, neurological and psychiatric examination, advanced brain imaging, blood biomarkers, and culturally relevant cognitive testing to detect these changes earlier than ever before.

Advancing Brain Health at Holy Cross Health’s Phil Smith Neuroscience Institute
By Eduardo Zamora, MD
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia worldwide. As people live longer, the prevalence of this disease is increasing rapidly. In the U.S., an estimated 7.2 million Americans aged 65 and older are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease.
In Alzheimer’s disease, the brain undergoes several changes. Beta-amyloid proteins accumulate extracellularly, disrupting communication and promoting neurodegeneration. Meanwhile, tau proteins deposit intracellularly, forming tangles that interfere with the cell’s transport system. These processes lead to inflammation, synapse loss and neuronal death. The disease typically begins in the hippocampus, essential for memory formation, and gradually spreads to other brain regions.
Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s has improved significantly in recent years. Traditionally, it relied on clinical assessments and excluding other conditions. Today, clinicians use cognitive testing along with neuroimaging techniques like Ultra-High-Field MRI or PET scans to observe brain changes. Cerebrospinal fluid tests that measure amyloid and tau protein levels, along with newer blood-based biomarkers, are now accessible diagnostic tools. These advancements have made early detection more accurate and less invasive.
Early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is crucial. It enables timely initiation of treatment, protection of healthy neurons, participation in clinical trials, planning for future care, and implementation of new therapies and lifestyle changes that may help slow disease progression. It also allows families to access support services and prepare for caregiving challenges.

Physicians: Help Florida Seniors Make Informed Decisions Miami-Dade and Broward County Medical Associations along with other county associations in Florida are promoting this survey: Your input is extremely valuable to Florida’s seniors as they evaluate their options between Traditional Medicare and the various Medicare Advantage Plans available.
Each October, seniors are inundated with marketing and promotional materials promoting the benefits of switching from Traditional Medicare to Medicare Advantage. However, these materials often lack sufficient information about the rights and protections seniors may be relinquishing by making that switch.
The feedback provided by physicians through this survey will be instrumental in helping Florida’s seniors make informed decisions. Physician organizations across the state are working to develop an annual guide to help seniors and their caregivers assess plan performance and choose the option that best fits their needs.
We encourage you to invite fellow physicians to complete the survey. The more data we collect, the more comprehensive and impactful this guide will be for Florida’s senior community. |

When Physicians Become Patients: Why Dr. Stephen Silverstein Chose Broward Health Imperial Point for Surgery
September 11, 2025- Stephen Silverstein, D.O., a respected internist and gerontologist, is well known throughout South Florida, having served the medical needs of patients for decades. After building a successful internal medicine practice in Pompano Beach, Dr. Silverstein remains active in the community and continues to care for vulnerable seniors.
When Dr. Silverstein himself required surgery to repair a hernia, he turned to someone he trusted, Alexander Parr, M.D., a surgeon at Broward Health Imperial Point. In spring 2025, Dr. Silverstein underwent a successful robotic hernia repair under the care of Dr. Parr.
“I’ve been in healthcare for many years, so I know what to expect,” said Dr. Silverstein. “My experience at Broward Health Imperial Point was exceptional and exceeded every expectation I had as a patient.”
While he has privileges at the hospital, Dr. Silverstein did not inform leadership of his scheduled procedure, nor did he request any special treatment. Instead, he chose to experience the process as any other patient would and came away genuinely impressed.
“My journey from the time I was admitted, through pre-op, post-op and recovery was efficient and seamless,” Dr. Silverstein said. “I was treated the way every patient deserves to be treated, with respect, kindness and a careful attention to detail. When I was at my most vulnerable, the team was compassionate and supportive every step of the way.”

HSS Pilot Study Announced at ESRA Annual Meeting Examines the Role of Cannabidiol in Total Knee Arthroplasty Pain Management
SEPTEMBER 11, 2025 – Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), the world’s leading academic medical center focused on musculoskeletal health, presented a research study at the European Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Therapy (ESRA) Annual Meeting, highlighting the effects of cannabidiol in patients undergoing bilateral total knee arthroplasty, often referred to as double knee replacement. Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating phytocannabinoid, has shown limited clinical evidence of its pain-relieving and opioid-sparing properties. Currently, the only FDA approved cannabidiol solution is available by prescription for specific conditions.
The study demonstrated the importance of monitoring accurate dosage and highlighted the need for additional long-term studies to better understand the role of cannabidiol in post-surgery pain management.
The pilot study, conducted over four years, followed 36 patients who received cannabidiol as a part of their treatment following surgery. Previous surveys at HSS and other institutions have shown that many patients are using cannabidiol to self-medicate, creating challenges for providers. To ensure safety, only relatively healthy patients were enrolled due to the demanding and invasive nature of the surgery.
“These patients experience significant pain after surgery and often require high doses of opioids,” said Alexandra Sideris, PhD, Director of the Pain Prevention Research Center at HSS and one of the co-authors of the study. “We approached this study knowing that if we were going to study a cannabis constituent to try to see if there is any benefit, we need to start with a population that could significantly benefit from adding on an additional medication. It is very painful to have both knees replaced.”
According to internal HSS data, this specific patient population showed a clear need for better pain control. The study team performed a blinded study, dividing patients into three groups. Some patients did not receive any CBD; instead, they were given the placebo solution. The other two groups received 400 milligrams or 800 milligrams of CBD. Patients received their first dose right before they went into surgery. They then received three additional doses on the evenings of the subsequent postoperative days—for a total of four doses. The study team monitored how many opioids were required throughout the first 72 hours after surgery.

West Palm Beach VA receives high scores in latest CMS hospital ratings
September 10, 2025 – The West Palm Beach VA Healthcare System (WPBVAHCS) announced today it has earned a three-star rating as part of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services 2025 hospital quality ratings.
CMS’s hospital ratings are based on five categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience and timely and effective care. A higher star rating, out of 5, indicates better performance on these quality measures.
Within the last year, the Thomas H. Corey VA Medical Center has instituted a number of improvements to better serve Veterans. These include:
-Recruiting leaders and team members who are the best of the best, with a shared passion for our mission and sheer determination to reach the highest standard of excellence.
-Propelling significant improvements and currently performing better than the local community and VA averages in mortality rates, outpatient performance, readmissions and emergency department flow. -Implementing additional measures to improve all areas that influence the quality of services delivered. These measures have made a profound impact, to include substantial improvement in satisfaction with the care and services provided.
“These ratings highlight the excellent care provided by the West Palm Beach VA Healthcare System,” said Cory Price, WPBVAHCS Executive Director. “Our job is to continue raising the bar for customer service and convenience throughout the department, so WPBVAHCS works better for the Veterans, families, caregivers and survivors we are charged with serving.”

The study also found that receiving MOUD in jail was associated with a 52% lower risk of fatal opioid overdose, a 24% lower risk of non-fatal opioid overdose, a 56% lower risk of death from any cause, and a 12% lower risk of reincarceration after release. These outcomes underscore the importance of providing MOUD treatment during incarceration.

Acupuncture treatment improves disabling effects of chronic low back pain in older adults
NIH-funded study supports acupuncture needling as a safe and effective pain treatment for this group.
September 12, 2025 – According to a study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), older Americans with chronic low back pain who received acupuncture had greater improvement in physical function and reduced pain than those who received usual medical care only, generally prescribed medications or physical therapy. Chronic low back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide and affects over one-third of older adults in the United States. Treatment options range from pain-relieving drugs to complementary therapies, including acupuncture. There is an urgent need for safe, effective, and non-addictive pain management approaches.
“Of the different treatments we have for chronic low back pain, most have a somewhat modest effect. They often reduce pain by about a third at best and can help people function better,” said lead author Lynn L. DeBar, Ph.D., Kaiser Permanente distinguished investigator. “Our clinical results suggests that acupuncture is working as well as many things that are more familiar to people. We found that the size of this effect, while modest, was positive and sustained.”
