Study Compares Robotic-Assisted to Augmented Reality Spine Surgery – Both Enable High Degree of Precision and Accuracy
December 6 2024 – A study at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) comparing robotic-assisted navigation (RAN) to the use of augmented reality (AR) in spine surgery found that both techniques demonstrate excellent accuracy and safety for pedicle screw placement. The research was published online ahead of print in the journal Spine.
Many spinal surgeries require the use of implants called pedicle screws to stabilize the spine, and precise positioning is critical for a successful surgery. “Compared to conventional free-hand techniques, both robotic-assisted navigation and the use of augmented reality have demonstrated superior accuracy,” said Darren R. Lebl, MD, MBA, a spine surgeon and director of research at HSS, and principal investigator of the study. “Our study is the first to directly compare RAN to AR with respect to screw placement precision.”

NIH modeling study looked at the individual and combined impacts of cancer prevention, screening, and treatment.

December 4, 2025 – Researchers from Miami Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, will present 11 posters and moderate one general session at this year’s San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS), hosted December 10-13, 2024, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. Miami Cancer Institute researchers will present the latest advances in HER2-low metastatic breast cancer, metaplastic breast cancer, as well as chemotherapy in elderly breast cancer patients, among others.
“I am very pleased with the quality of the research that my colleagues and I will be discussing at this year’s San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. We will be highlighting an ongoing prospective trial we are leading, which is one of the first trials that will hopefully shed some light on the important area of sequencing antibody drug conjugates in metastatic breast cancer,” said Reshma L. Mahtani, D.O., chief of breast medical oncology at Miami Cancer Institute. “Additionally, we will be presenting on a subgroup analysis of genomic results from a larger multicenter cohort study of HER2-low metastatic breast cancer, a retrospective analysis of the association between body composition measures and relative dose intensity of (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy in elderly breast cancer patients, and a retrospective U.S. electronic health records study on HER2+-early breast cancer treatment and outcomes by risk of recurrence, among numerous others. These advances, together with many others shared at the symposium, are a true source of hope for patients affected by breast cancer in the U.S. and across the globe.”
