ACHE OF SOUTH FLORIDA MEMBER SPOTLIGHT MAY 2024: CAREN BOCK

Caren Bock explained the simple reason why she chose nursing as a career: “It truly was to give back and to help others.” She said that idea has always been at her core since she was young, and as she developed, she naturally gravitated toward leadership and mentoring others. And she has been doing that for more than 20 years.

Currently chief nursing officer at HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital, Bock has been with HCA for more than eight years and has been in her current position for 1-1/2 years. As CNO, she believes her role and her legacy “is building leaders, and that culture is defined by embracing life and improving life around us. We need to take care of patients; we care like family, truly making sure we’re improving their quality of life.”

She said that in order to do that, it’s important to make sure the right services are being offered, and the highest quality of care is being provided. “The way to do that is to ensure that you are also building up those around you. I’m huge on mentoring others and making sure everybody feels like they belong.”

Bock considers herself to be very blessed to be part of HCA, “as we live the mission, ‘Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.'” Being a part of something greater is supported by the numerous leadership programs HCA offers. “They provide leadership opportunities, so I’m able to look at all facets, including opportunities to help improve those processes in the hospital system.”

UPDATED NEWS INFORMATION FROM THE LAST THREE DAYS IN SOUTH FLORIDA

HOLY CROSS HEALTH OFFERS ACESSA LAPAROSCOPIC RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION FOR FIBROIDS

The minimally invasive procedure offers an alternative to hysterectomy or myomectomy

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – April 29, 2024 – Holy Cross Health in Fort Lauderdale, Florida is now offering the Acessa ProVu® system to shrink uterine fibroids.

Every year, approximately 540,000 hysterectomies are performed for non-cancerous conditions, including uterine fibroids.1 The clinically proven Acessa Laparoscopic Radiofrequency Ablation (Lap-RFA) procedure provides qualified patients with a minimally invasive alternative to hysterectomy or myomectomy and reduces the likelihood of major blood loss during surgery.

The revolutionary procedure is performed by a gynecologist using general anesthesia in an operating room. The physician makes two small incisions, usually less than a quarter inch in length, in the belly button and at the bikini line for the camera and Acessa ultrasound probe to enter the body. The probe is placed directly on the uterus to detect fibroids in the uterus and uterine walls. In clinical studies, the Acessa system’s laparoscopic ultrasound can locate 1.5 to two times more fibroids than an MRI or transvaginal ultrasound.2 This enables fibroids that previously would have gone undetected to be treated.

For each fibroid the doctor wants to treat, electrode rays at the end of the Acessa handpiece are deployed to release heat energy into the fibroid. The heat of the zap destroys cell tissue, changing the fibroid’s consistency from solid like a baseball to soft and mushy like a marshmallow.

GO RED FOR WOMEN MOVEMENT CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF IMPACT WITH PALM BEACH LUNCHEON

Local changemaker Dr. Deeawn Roundtree presented with Woman of Impact award

April 29, 2024 — Heart care is the new self-care according to the Palm Beach County 2024 Go Red for Women Luncheon’s energetic keynote speaker, Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum. Steinbaum, a New York-based cardiologist of more than 20 years and one of the founders of the Go Red for Women movement, encouraged the 400 luncheon attendees to take their heart health seriously.

The luncheon celebrated the culmination of this year’s local Go Red for Women campaign, which brings awareness and funding to women’s heart health. Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, and the No. 1 cause of death for moms.

“Twenty years ago, Go Red for Women was launched as a movement to bring attention to women’s heart health,” says Pam Rauch, 2024 Palm Beach County Go Red for Women Chairwoman and a Florida Power & Light Company vice president. “That meant more women participating in heart research, more funding for that scientific focus, and a bigger push for heart health awareness among our moms, daughters, friends and more.”

April 30, 2024 – Newly updated guidelines on neuroendocrine tumors developed by an expert at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and collaborators provide clinicians with the latest recommendations for staging and management of these rare but increasingly diagnosed tumors.

The guidelines, developed for the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) and summarized today in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, highlight recent changes for treating these tumors and offer a snapshot of this rapidly evolving field.

“There’s a lot that goes into cancer staging,” explained Aman Chauhan, M.D., who leads Sylvester’s recently established Neuroendocrine Tumor Program and was first author of the article. “Survival and outcome rates and key changes in how we diagnose these tumors are all factors that affect their staging.”

MAY IS STROKE AWARENESS MONTH: WHY YOU SHOULD ACT FAST

May 1, 2024 — Did you know that stroke has no age limits, and younger adults are increasingly affected by stroke and its risk factors? Strokes happen when blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. In either case, parts of the brain become damaged or die.

Every minute counts when a stroke is suspected. May is National Stroke Awareness Month, when health care professionals remind the public that understanding the signs of a stroke are key to getting care.

Stroke affects about 800,000 people in the U.S. each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Thankfully, Palm Beach County residents have two Palm Beach Health Network Comprehensive Stroke Centers at Delray and St. Mary’s medical centers, and three Primary Stroke Centers at Palm Beach Gardens, Good Samaritan and West Boca Medical centers.

NIH-FUNDED CLINICAL TRIAL LINKS FREQUENT ANGER TO INCREASED RISK OF HEART DISEASE

Findings demonstrate impairment of blood vessel function; may lead to heart attack, stroke.

May 1, 2024 – Recurring feelings of anger may increase a person’s risk of developing heart disease by limiting the blood vessels’ ability to open, according to a new study supported by the National Institutes of Health. The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA), shows for the first time that anger is linked to this vascular impairment — a precursor to the kind of long-term damage that can lead to heart attack and stroke.

SCIENTISTS DISCOVER OVER 100 NEW GENOMIC REGIONS LINKED TO BLOOD PRESSURE

NIH-led study finds genetic markers that explain up to 12% of the differences between two people’s blood pressure.

May 1, 2024 – National Institutes of Health researchers and collaborators have discovered over 100 new regions of the human genome, also known as genomic loci, that appear to influence a person’s blood pressure. Results of the study also point to several specific genomic loci that may be relevant to iron metabolism and a type of cellular receptor known as adrenergic receptors.

The study, published in Nature Genetics, is one of the largest such genomic studies of blood pressure to date, including data from over 1 million participants and laying the groundwork for researchers to better understand how blood pressure is regulated. Such insights could point to potential new drug targets.

LOW OXYGEN DURING SLEEP AND SLEEP APNEA LINKED TO EPILEPSY IN OLDER ADULTS

Findings provide further insight into the complex relationship between sleep disorders and epilepsy.

April 30, 2024 – Sleep apnea and low oxygen levels while sleeping are associated with epilepsy that first occurs after 60 years of age, known as late-onset epilepsy, according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and published in Sleep. The link was independent of other known risk factors for late-onset epilepsy and sleep apnea including hypertension and stroke. The findings may help to better understand the relationship between sleep disorders and late-onset epilepsy, as well as identify potential targets for treatment.

“There’s increasing evidence that late-onset epilepsy may be indicative of underlying vascular disease, or neurodegenerative disease, even potentially as a preclinical marker of neurodegenerative disease,” said Rebecca Gottesman, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the Stroke Branch at the NIH’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), and an author on the study. “Compared to other age groups, older adults have the highest incidence of new cases of epilepsy – up to half of which have no clear cause. Sleep apnea is common among people with epilepsy, but the association is not well understood.”
