KIDZ Adds athenahealth EHR to Increase Efficiency, Improve Patient Communication

When KIDZ Medical Services first implemented the athenahealth EHR (electronic health record) and patient portal 18 months ago, the West Palm Beach multispecialty practice team wasn’t sure how different it would be from previous patient record-keeping iterations. However, a number of useful features have made it well worth the training time and investment, according to physician “super user” Matthew Ramirez, M.D., MS, FAAP, a board-certified pediatric hematologist/oncologist at KIDZ Medical Services, and whose office is located at the West Palm Beach location.

“Overall, it’s a game-changer,” Dr. Ramirez said. “All KIDZ Medical offices are now on the same EHR, which makes it easier to see the records of patients who see other KIDZ providers; it enables us to coordinate care better than ever before.” KIDZ Medical Services cares for neonatal, pediatric and women’s health patients across 15 office locations and 19 hospital partner sites throughout South Florida.

The athenahealth system allows users to coordinate and collaborate with other users, like sharing a patient’s treatment records or clinical notes from the patient’s pediatrician or primary care provider. The system makes it easy to transfer patient information into the system.

“With one click, you can update a patient’s records, which is especially helpful with long-term patients who may have a narrative in their notes; for example, how they presented with a specific disease, their medical history, comorbidity conditions they have and more,” said Dr. Ramirez, noting that other versions require providers to type or cut and paste the information.

“The ability to bring in historical information from previous notes without having to type everything out really helps with charting,” he added.

Optimizing precision, patient outcomes and surgical care with 150 design enhancements

March 4, 2025 – Memorial Regional Hospital is the first in Broward County to acquire the da Vinci 5 (dV5), Intuitive’s newly launched and most advanced surgical system. Featuring 150 design enhancements over the previous model, the dV5 is engineered to elevate surgical precision, improve patient outcomes, and streamline efficiency, setting a new standard in minimally invasive care.

This state-of-the-art technology enables Memorial Regional Hospital to expand access to minimally invasive surgical procedures for patients throughout the region. Benefits include shorter hospital stays, reduced pain and discomfort, smaller incisions with less scarring, and faster recovery times, ensuring an improved overall patient experience.

“The addition of the dV5 reinforces Memorial Regional Hospital’s long-standing commitment to providing innovative, high-quality care,” said Leslie Pollart, chief nursing officer of Memorial Regional Hospital. “The advanced system empowers our skilled surgical team to perform even the most complex procedures with unmatched precision, fewer surgical complications, less pain and blood loss, and a shorter hospital length of stay.”

Robotic surgical technology has revolutionized treatment options across multiple specialties, allowing Memorial to offer advanced procedures for conditions such as lung and esophageal surgeries, complex urological procedures, gallbladder removal, nephrectomy for transplant donors, bariatric surgeries, hernia repairs, and more.

TWO PATIENTS REUNITE AFTER FORMING A LASTING FRIENDSHIP WHILE RECOVERING FROM SURGERY AT BROWARD HEALTH REHABILITATION INSTITUTE

Broward Health North staff and leaders enjoyed a reunion with former patients Steven Costerison and Alan Church who received physical and occupational therapy at the Broward Health Rehabilitation Institute.

MARCH 7 2025- After becoming the best of friends while recovering from back and hip surgery at the Broward Health Rehabilitation Institute, located at Broward Health North, two patients returned to the hospital for a reunion on February 26.

Steven Costerison of Pompano and Alan Church from Key West met as roommates while receiving inpatient post-surgical rehabilitation at the Broward Health Rehabilitation Institute. Costerison rehabilitated from back surgery he had at another facility, while Church was recovering from a hip surgery performed at Broward Health Imperial Point.

“Alan and I were admitted the same day, and we had so much in common. We’re the same age, we both love music. We’ve both been married a long time, our wives even have the same first name,” said Costerison. “We became fast friends.”

Both received physical and occupational therapy to learn to walk and safely perform tasks of daily living, from getting dressed to managing stairs and getting in and out of a car.

“The staff were very happy to see Steve and Alan,” said Cheri Silveria, Regional Director of Rehabilitation Services at Broward Health North. “They were quite popular when they were with us and made every day they were here even brighter with their funny banter, singing and laughter.”

Clinical Investigator Joins the Rapidly Expanding Cellular Therapies Program at TGH Cancer Institute

Dr. Megan Melody specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of lymphomas and in the design of innovative clinical trials for cellular therapies.

March 6. 2025 – As it continues to grow its Cellular Therapy program for the treatment of blood cancers and non-malignant diseases, Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has recruited Dr. Megan Melody to the TGH Cancer Institute Cellular Therapy team. She joins Tampa General from the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in Chicago.

Melody is a hematologist-oncologist specializing in blood cancers and cellular therapy. She is actively involved in clinical research, focusing on new immunotherapeutic strategies such as cellular therapies and bispecific antibodies for patients with lymphomas. Immunotherapeutics are treatments that use the body’s own immune system to fight disease and bispecific antibodies are designed to bridge two immune cells or target two different cells in the body. Tampa General’s Cellular Therapy program includes advanced treatments such as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, which uses the body’s own immune T cells to identify and kill cancer cells.

“Bringing Dr. Melody, a rising star in the field of cellular therapies, is another step forward as we continue to build an innovative cancer institute that in just over three years has positioned itself among the top 50 cancer centers in the nation said Dr. Eduardo Sotomayor, vice president and executive director of the TGH Cancer Institute. “Her interest in clinical research and commitment to provide state-of-the art treatment for every patient aligns well with our shared purpose of innovating cancer care with compassion and healing.”

Melody’s research focuses on lymphoma (primarily Hodgkin’s and large B-cell lymphoma), CAR T-cell therapy and bispecific antibodies. During her fellowship training at Northwestern she was extremely productive with several peer-reviewed publications, abstracts, book chapters and presentations of her research, which is of the highest caliber at regional, national and international platforms, including coveted oral presentations at the 2024 American Society of Hematology meeting and the 2025 Tandem American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy and the Center for International Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Research meetings.

CERTIFICATION AS A GLUTEN-FREE FOOD SERVICE FACILITY

March 6, 2025 – Wellington Regional Medical center (WRMC) has achieved its certification as Gluten-Free Food Service program for the second year in a row. The WRMC nutrition team met the rigorous standards and expectations for safety required to achieve this honor. The team is proud to serve delicious meals for any diet preference on a daily basis and this designation portrays their commitment to provide quality food for patients.

The Gluten-Free Food Service (GFFS) audits and validates restaurants and food businesses that serve gluten-free food.   The Gluten-Free Food Service validation program is a program of the Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG), a non-profit organization that has been serving the needs of the gluten-free community for over 45 years.  GIG is on a mission to make life easier for everyone living gluten-free and WRMC is proud to be a part of this program.

WRMC will be displaying the validated Gluten Free Safe Spot logo throughout the hospital to represent the independent verification of quality, integrity, and purity of businesses serving gluten-free food. Validation as a Gluten Free Safe Spot establishes trust with gluten-free patrons in the ability of a facility to provide safe gluten-free food.

Established in 2009, GFFS has held its food service establishments to the highest standards. Consumers recognize locations validated as Gluten Free Safe Spots serve gluten-free food that meets the nonprofit GFFS’s rigorous standards and expectations for safety. GFFS validates participating establishments, from restaurants to college dining, senior living, hospitals and more, by visiting locations in-person to ensure they follow best practices for gluten-free food safety and ensure high-quality staff training.

Nationally-Recognized Health Care Providers, Leading Academics and State Leaders Address Access to Cancer Treatment in Florida’s Rural Communities

Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute hosted a day of keynotes, presentations and discussions at TGH Brooksville to address the challenges facing cancer patients in rural communities.

March 5, 2025 —Tampa General Hospital (TGH) Cancer Institute and USF Health, in partnership with the Florida Department of Health, hosted leading health care experts, academic researchers, and cancer survivors for a series of discussions at TGH Brooksville on the unique challenges rural populations face when it comes to cancer.

The event, titled “Addressing the Cancer Control Continuum in Rural Communities,” featured a distinguished lineup of speakers, including John D. Couris, president and CEO of Tampa General Hospital, and Eduardo Sotomayor, M.D., vice president and executive director of the Cancer Institute at Tampa General Hospital. Experts from the TGH Cancer Institute, University of South Florida, Moffitt Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society, among others, led sessions.

“With the incredible technologies and innovations available today, nothing should stand in the way of cancer patients accessing breakthrough research, innovative treatments and world-class care. Yet geography remains a substantial barrier,” said Couris. “By convening some of the brightest minds in health care with leaders who can inspire meaningful change, we are working to break down these barriers and give every cancer patient the best possible chance at the best possible outcome.”

Academic health systems like the partnership between Tampa General Hospital and USF Health have the resources and medical infrastructure to help increase access to the highest levels of care for these rural patients, said Charles J. Lockwood, M.D., MHCM, executive vice president and chief academic officer of Tampa General, executive vice president of USF Health and dean of the Morsani College of Medicine.

“We are committed to ensuring that all Floridians can receive comprehensive cancer services that are coordinated across the full spectrum of care, so that these patients’ needs are met — whether they need to receive innovative surgical procedures, access to the newest clinical research trials or other services,” according to Dr. Lockwood. “Our faculty physicians are a vital part of improving the lives and health of patients across Florida.”

New Research Sheds Light on Why Scleroderma Affects Mostly Women and How to Treat It

MARCH 6, 2025 -Two new studies led by researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) have uncovered key biological mechanisms driving systemic sclerosis (SSc), or scleroderma – a rare and often devastating autoimmune disease that causes fibrosis (tissue hardening) and inflammation. The research, published in the March issue of the Journal of Experimental Medicine, helps explain why the disease disproportionately affects women and reveals potential treatment targets, some of which are already in development.

Scleroderma affects approximately 300,000 people in the U.S., with about one-third developing systemic disease, which can affect major organs such as the lungs, kidneys or heart. Women are four times more likely than men to be diagnosed with the disease, but until now, the underlying reason for this gender disparity had remained elusive.

In one study, a team of researchers led by Franck Barrat, PhD, found that two genetic receptors called TLR7 and TLR8, which are present on the X chromosome, are important drivers for the activation of plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs), fueling chronic fibrosis. pDCs are immune cells found in fibrotic skin but not in healthy skin and have previously been shown to contribute to scleroderma.

In healthy cells, one X chromosome is typically deactivated, however, the study revealed that in patients with scleroderma, this process is disrupted due to the ability of TLR7 and TLR8 to escape X chromosome deactivation in pDCs.
“The magnitude of this escape was striking,” says Dr. Barrat.

In healthy individuals, 10 to 15 percent of cells can evade the deactivation process. But in scleroderma patients, the escape occurred in more than 35 percent of the pDCs. This was a significant and unexpected difference.

“The expression of two copies of the TLR7 and TLR8 in such a large number of cells can very well explain the chronic activation of these immune cells and why this disease is so prevalent in female patients,” concludes Dr. Barrat.

Dr. Corey Harrington Looking to Make Big Impact

Dr. Corey Harrington is a successful chiropractor who is passionate about making a broader impact in the healthcare industry. It’s not that he doesn’t like his work, but, rather than being in a position to help just one person at a time, he wants to be able to make a larger impact.

Dr. Harrington is a Faculty Clinician at Keiser University, a chiropractic college, but previously worked in a private practice setting. “I practiced privately in North Miami,” he said. “That began in 2016 when I moved to Florida from North Carolina.” Dr. Harrington currently works in a campus-based clinic that provides treatment for students and the local community. He also serves as an anatomy and physiology professor. “We provide a normal range of services, just like when I was in private practice.” He said he loves the work: “I do enjoy education, I taught at Broward College for a little while, so I love teaching in general, and this was a way for me to combine teaching with the practice of chiropractic medicine.”

As someone who is passionate about his work, he explained that one of the things he likes most is trying to bring the best out in patients by blending evidence-based practice (EBP) and compassion to restore function, enhance wellness, and empower patients — without drugs or surgery. “We don’t prescribe drugs, we don’t do surgeries – not because those things are bad, but if we’re just talking about pain or disability, we’re trying to take care of that in a natural way.”

According to Dr. Harrington, chiropractic care aligns with the value-based care model by emphasizing patient-centered, non-invasive treatment that improves outcomes while reducing costs. By focusing on evidence-based musculoskeletal care, chiropractors help prevent unnecessary surgeries, reduce reliance on opioids, and enhance mobility and quality of life.

HHS’ Civil Rights Office Investigates Alleged Discrimination in Health Care Workforce and Training to Restore Merit-Based Opportunity

OCR Opens Four Investigations of Medical Schools and Hospitals for Operating Medical Education, Training or Scholarship Programs with Race- or Sex-Based Criteria

MARCH 7, 2025 – In alignment with President Trump’s Executive Order 14173, Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunitylinks to an external website, today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is announcing investigations into four medical schools and hospitals under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VI) and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (Section 1557).

These investigations are in response to allegations and information OCR received that certain medical schools and hospitals that receive HHS funding may operate medical education, training, or scholarship programs for current or prospective workforce members that discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, or sex.  National policy under Executive Order 14173 directs federal agencies to enforce long-standing civil rights laws and “to combat illegal private sector [diversity, equity and inclusion] DEI preferences, mandates, policies, programs, and activities.”

“Today’s actions restore merit-based opportunities in medicine and signify that hard-working health care professionals and high-achieving students in the pipeline for medical and nursing fields should not be demeaned at work, or excluded from professional or scholarship opportunities, because of their race or sex,” said Anthony Archeval, Acting Director of the Office for Civil Rights at HHS.

DOJ, HHS, ED, and GSA Announce Initial Cancelation of Grants and Contracts to Columbia University Worth $400 Million

Members of the Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism take swift action to protect Jewish students in response to inaction by Columbia University

WASHINGTON- MARCH 7, 2025  — Today, the Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Department of Education (ED), and the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced the immediate cancellation of approximately $400 million in federal grants and contracts to Columbia University due to the school’s continued inaction in the face of persistent harassment of Jewish students. These cancellations represent the first round of action and additional cancellations are expected to follow. The Task Force is continuing to review and coordinate across federal agencies to identify additional cancellations that could be made swiftly. DOJ, HHS, ED, and GSA are taking this action as members of the Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism. Columbia University currently holds more than $5 billion in federal grant commitments.

On March 3rd, the Task Force notifiedlinks to an external website the Acting President of Columbia University that it would conduct a comprehensive review of the university’s federal contracts and grants  in light of ongoing investigations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. Chaos and anti-Semitic harassment have continued on and near campus in the days since. Columbia has not responded to the Task Force.

“Since October 7, Jewish students have faced relentless violence, intimidation, and anti-Semitic harassment on their campuses – only to be ignored by those who are supposed to protect them,” said Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. “Universities must comply with all federal antidiscrimination laws if they are going to receive federal funding. For too long, Columbia has abandoned that obligation to Jewish students studying on its campus. Today, we demonstrate to Columbia and other universities that we will not tolerate their appalling inaction any longer.”

President Trump has been clear that any college or university that allows illegal protests and repeatedly fails to protect students from anti-Semitic harassment on campus will be subject to the loss of federal funding.

“Freezing the funds is one of the tools we are using to respond to this spike in anti-Semitism. This is only the beginning,” said Leo Terrell, Senior Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights and head of the DOJ Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism. “Cancelling these taxpayer funds is our strongest signal yet that the Federal Government is not going to be party to an educational institution like Columbia that does not protect Jewish students and staff.”
