BROWARD HEALTH MEDICAL CENTER ADVANCES SURGICAL CARE WITH CUTTING-EDGE DA VINCI 5 SYSTEM

APRIL 14, 2026 – Broward Health has expanded its robotic surgery program with the addition of the da Vinci 5 Surgical System at Broward Health Medical Center. Felice De Stefano, M.D., a colorectal surgeon with the Broward Health Physician Group, recently completed the hospital’s first procedure using the state-of-the-art system, a colon resection on a man in his 70s who had a colon tumor.

“This state-of-the-art system represents a significant leap forward in minimally invasive surgery and underscores Broward Health’s commitment to providing patients with the highest standard of care throughout South Florida,” said Manny Linares, CEO of Broward Health Medical Center.

The da Vinci 5 system uses advanced robotic technology that enables surgeons to operate through small incisions with tiny instruments and a high-definition, three-dimensional camera. Surgeons control the system from a console in the operating room.

“The enhanced visualization and precision allow us to perform complex colorectal procedures with greater control,” said Dr. De Stefano. “This can translate to smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery for our patients.”

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is First in Region to Offer Sedation-Free Evaluation of Upper Gastrointestinal Tract in Children

Transnasal endoscopy procedure can especially benefit children with eosinophilic esophagitis, a condition often requiring repeat endoscopies throughout treatment.

April 13, 2026 – Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is the first in South Florida to offer a new sedation-free procedure to evaluate the upper digestive tract in children. Transnasal endoscopy can be used as an alternative to traditional upper endoscopy performed through the mouth for patients and their families who prefer to avoid sedation and the associated inconveniences.

“Transnasal endoscopy offers many potential benefits for patients and their families,” said Dr. Laura Irastorza, Co-Director of the Transnasal Endoscopy Program at Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists.  “It can be performed in an outpatient office without lengthy advance fasting and eliminates the need for placement of an intravenous line, and the longer recovery time associated with anesthesia. It is particularly of interest to families of children with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), as these youngsters often require a series of endoscopies during care.”

Tampa General Hospital is Only Florida Hospital Participating in Clinical Trial of New Treatment for Urinary Incontinence Post-Prostate Removal

Study Evaluates New Device Designed to Reduce Post‑Prostatectomy Incontinence.

April 14 2026 —Tampa General Hospital (TGH) and the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine are leading the way in urological research. The TGH Urology Institute has enrolled its first patient in the ARID II pivotal clinical trial. This national study will evaluate the Voro Urologic Scaffold, an investigational device intended to support urinary control in men following prostate removal surgery. The study is led locally by Dr. Trushar Patel, urologist with the TGH Urology Institute and associate professor of Medicine with the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, and director of Urologic Oncology and Robotic Surgery with USF Health. TGH is the only site in Florida and one of only 19 hospitals in the country participating in the trial.

Developed by Levee Medical, the Voro Urologic Scaffold is placed during prostatectomy and is designed to reinforce the urinary sphincter, the muscle responsible for continence. The scaffold is made from a resorbable material similar to surgical sutures and is engineered to provide structural support for up to nine months before dissolving. The goal is to promote healing during the early recovery period without leaving a permanent implant.

A Second Chance at Life: How Early Screening and a Broward Health Surgeon Saved a Fort Lauderdale Man from Colon Cancer

April 13, 2026- After putting it off for years, Bob McClure finally had his first colonoscopy at age 53. The screening helps detect colorectal cancer, and even though Bob had a family history of the disease, he had some fear of the procedure and delayed it for years. He finally agreed to move forward after the urging of his primary care doctor, Diana C. Hodarnau, M.D., a Broward Health Physician Group physician.

“We recommend that patients at average risk start screening at age 45, and those with higher risk should start even earlier,” said Dr. Hodarnau. “With colorectal cancer rates rising in younger adults, it’s more important than ever to get screened and to talk to your doctor if you’re noticing changes in your bowel habits or experiencing symptoms like unexplained weakness.”

Sarasota Memorial Cancer Team Achieves 75% Early-Stage Lung Cancer Diagnosis Rate

by Expanding Detection Beyond Screening

April 14, 2026 – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System (SMH) reported that 75% of lung cancers diagnosed through an innovative early detection program at SMH’s Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute in 2025 were found at the earliest, most treatable stages (Stage I or II). The benchmark results – more than double the national average for early detection and nearly triple Florida’s average – demonstrate the success of a scalable model that can be used to improve early detection and outcomes for the world’s deadliest cancer.

“Diagnosing lung cancer early is the single, most important thing we can do to save lives,” said Joseph Seaman, MD, associate chief medical officer at Sarasota Memorial and a pulmonologist who helped develop SMH’s early detection program. “When detected early, in Stage I or II, 70% of lung cancer patients will survive five years or more. When it’s found very late (Stage IV), the 5-year survival rate drops to just 10%.”

One in 10 people may have resistance to GLP-1 diabetes drugs

GLP-1 medications may not work well for a significant portion of the population, a Stanford Medicine researcher and her colleagues found. Genetic testing could help patients get on the right drugs faster.

By Nina Bai

New research suggests that certain genetic variants can decrease the ability of GLP-1 diabetes drugs to regulate blood sugar — a mysterious phenomenon known as GLP-1 resistance.

More than a quarter of people with Type 2 diabetes take GLP-1 receptor agonists, but the popular diabetes drugs might not work as well for people who have certain genetic variants, according to a new study by Stanford Medicine scientists and their collaborators.

The genetic variants, carried by roughly 10% of the general population, cause a surprising and still mysterious phenomenon that researchers refer to as GLP-1 resistance, in which levels of the hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), which helps regulate blood sugar, are higher but less biologically effective.

Volunteers Are The Quiet Heartbeat of A Safe Haven for Newborns

April 14, 2026 – Volunteers are the quiet heartbeat of every nonprofit. They show up not because they have to, but because they care—and that simple truth carries extraordinary power. In small organizations especially, where resources are often limited, volunteers don’t just support the mission—they help sustain it. They fill the gaps, lift the weight, and bring energy, compassion, and commitment that no budget can fully capture.

But their impact goes far beyond the tasks they complete. Volunteers bring humanity into the work. They offer a listening ear, a reassuring smile, a moment of kindness that can change someone’s day—or even their life. To those we serve, a volunteer is often more than a helping hand; they are a reminder that someone cares, that they are not alone, and that hope is still present.

New insurer data shows parity gaps in mental vs physical health care

April 14, 2026  — A new tool unveiled today provides the first look at real-time commercial insurance data on mental health and substance use coverage metrics. The Mental Health Parity Index raises the potential of widespread issues for patient access and clinician pay, which can mean longer wait times, higher out-of-pocket costs, and increased reliance on out-of-network care for individuals seeking treatment. The Index was launched by The Kennedy Forum in collaboration with Third Horizon, the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Psychological Foundation, and Ballmer Group.

The Index aligns with what many families experience on a regular basis. The release of the national Mental Health Parity Index makes accessible data that may help explain why commercially insured Americans face widespread access gaps to mental health and substance use care relative to physical health services:

AMA launches “Health vs. Hype” podcast series with iHeartMedia

April 14, 2026 — The American Medical Association (AMA), in collaboration with iHeartMedia’s Ruby studio, today announced the launch of its new podcast series, “Health vs. Hype with the AMA.” The eight-episode series will provide an entertaining deep dive into the latest viral wellness trends, DIY medicine, and common health myths. Each episode will also include an evidence-based discussion with a physician to help listeners understand the trend and distinguish between which health claims are real, which are risky, and which are backed by science.

“With wellness trends and health claims from influencers filling our social media feeds every day, it’s harder than ever to separate fact from fiction and know what information to trust. Our health is our most valuable asset, and relying only on algorithms or influencers can come at a real cost,” said AMA CEO John Whyte, MD, MPH. “’Health vs. Hype’ cuts through the noise—bringing people clear, evidence-based insights from physicians so they know what is clinically sound and what’s just clickbait.”

NIH-funded breakthrough shrinks CRISPR for precision delivery in the body

Smaller gene-editing system could expand treatment options for cancer, ALS and other diseases.

April 13, 2026 – A National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded research team has discovered an enhanced CRISPR gene-editing system that could enable targeted delivery inside the human body — a key step toward broader clinical use. Researchers identified a naturally occurring enzyme, Al3Cas12f, that is small enough to fit into adeno-associated virus vectors, a leading targeted delivery method for gene therapies. They then engineered an enhanced version that dramatically improved gene-editing performance in human cells.
